Where to stay in Tashkent, Uzbekistan? Discover the best areas to stay in Tbilisi in this post, the capital city of this thriving Central Asian country

Tashkent is the capital city of Uzbekistan and it’s the largest city in the country. When it comes to tourism it can’t boast the architecture and charm of Samarkand and Bukhara, but that shouldn’t put you off visiting. Tashkent is a vibrant and bustling capital with plenty to see and do!

tashkent uzbekistan

If you’re travelling to Tashkent, we imagine you’ll be wondering about the best places to stay. You’re in luck! We’ve taken a look at the coolest neighbourhoods in Tashkent so that you can easily plan your visit.

Travel in Tashkent: Overview

If you want to discover Central Asia, Tashkent is a great place to start. Locals are welcoming and friendly, while there’s plenty of things to do in town. Its location means that the culture is a mixture of Russian, Asian, and Middle Eastern. Think traditional Islamic mosques rubbing shoulders with 20th century Soviet towers. Some of the most beautiful buildings include the grand Tashkent Opera House and the Khast Imom complex. You’ll find the older Quran in the world here!

The food is another reason to visit. Head to the Chorsu Bazaar to try local fresh produce, including bread which bakes upside down. Oh, and if you need to anything, be sure to haggle.

Overall, this is a great city to start your Central Asian adventure. So, let’s take a closer look at the best places to stay.

If you are traveling to Uzbekistan the best option is flying to the Tashkent International Airport. Uzbekistan Airlines has direct flights from Tashkent to many cities in Asia and Europe.

To book train tickets to and inside the country you can check the Uzbekistan Railways website. The country has some pretty modern trains, not in all routes though.

Best Areas to stay in Tashkent

As you’d expect from a capital city, Tashkent is pretty big. There are lots of neighbourhoods across this sprawling metropolis, so how can you know which is the best one to choose? We’ve researched a few different options to help you plan your stay in Tashkent. Each neighbourhood offers a unique flavour of the city.

Neighbourhoods come with their own advantages and disadvantages. There are a lot of hotels around the UZ Expo Centre, but it’s quite expensive! Another area worth looking at is around Mirabad Street, Tashkent’s predominantly Korean neighbourhood.

However, we’ve decided to take a closer look at Eski Shahar, the Old Town, and the area around Opera Square. There is also a new shopping mall that goes by the same name “Eski Shahar”.

Eski Shahar (Old Town)

Eski Shahar is probably the most characterful neighbourhood in Tashkent. Not only that, but it’s also home to two of the city’s most prominent attractions. These are the Chorsu Bazaar and Khast Imam.

You’ll notice that Tashkent is full of high-rise buildings, but not here. Single storey flank either side of the winding streets, creating a cosy and homely atmosphere. After all, this is largely a residential area. Vacation rental apartments have recently been legalised in Uzbekistan, so this is a good spot to look for something traditional. The main metro station in the Old Town is called Chorsu.

Opera Square

There are two main parts of Tashkent. One is the Old Town, which we’ve just explored, while the other is the New Town. That’s the area based around Opera Square and Amir Timur Square. We’ve chosen to focus specifically on Opera Square, as Amur Timur is a little less central. However, you can find some great places to eat and drink there!

If you want to head to the Tashkent’s 3 main museums, then Opera Square is a good place to stay. One of these museums is the State Museum of Uzbekistan! It’s also just a short distance from the Anhor Canal.

As well as a number of hotels in this area, you’ll also find some of the best places to eat in Tashkent. Try a plate of Plov (like a pilaf rice dish) and some tea at one of the many local tea houses. The closest metro station to Opera Square is Kosmonavtlar.

Last of all, if you are staying here, don’t miss visiting the spectacular Alisher Navoï Opera. It’s one of the most impressive buildings in Tashkent, and there are regular ballet and opera performances!

ELITE HOTEL – an excellent hotel offering great value for the money in one of the best areas of Tashkent.

Sharq Hotel – a great hotel with easy access to the Kosmonavtlar Metro Station

Luxurious Hotels in Tashkent – $$$

Hyatt Regency Tashkent – a high end hotel in Tashkent with a beautiful interior.

Wyndham Tashkent – another luxurious option to stay in the capital of Uzbekistan.

Cost of travelling in Tashkent

How much does it cost to travel in Tashkent? That’s a tricky question to answer. Although the cost of living is generally quite cheap, accommodation isn’t. Budget hotels and hostels are a rarity here, so you might feel you’re paying quite a lot for what you get.

Eating out, travelling around the city, and visiting monuments is quite cheap though. For example, you can get fast food for as little as a dollar, and few restaurants will cost more than $10. Even high-end ones! Also, the metro only costs around $0.20 US for a single journey!

On the flip side, travel to and from Uzbekistan is quite expensive. However recently the country has relaxed its visa policy, making it considerably easier to get into the country.

Best Months to Visit Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is not a very touristy country (yet), so there is not a season in which the country is overcrowded. However, seasons are rather extreme.

Summer in Tashkent is pretty hot, with temperatures rather frequently going above 35 C (95 F). In winter, temperatures are often freezing. For that reason, the best time to visit Uzbekistan is definitely during Spring, in the months of April, May and early June. Another good option is early Autumn (September and early October).

Where to Stay in Nagoya? Check our guide to the best places to stay in Nagoya, one of the biggest cities in Japan

If you want to explore one of the most interesting cities in Central Japan, you should definitely come for a stay in Nagoya. Known as the country’s third largest metropolitan city, Nagoya has been the home base to some of the world’s top industrial and tech manufacturers, including the Japanese car company Toyota.

Tourism in Nagoya: Overview

While Tokyo gets all the buzz and the majority of international visitors to Japan, Nagoya is another option for those willing to experience a more untouched side of the Japanese culture. As mentioned above, the city is one of the biggest in Japan, and the largest in the Chubu region.

The city is also far cheaper than Tokyo or Osaka, especially when it comes to accommodation prices. It can be a great option if you want to spend some weeks in Japan without spending too much.

Chubu Centrair International Airport in the artificial island of Tokoname connects Nagoya to the world. Many domestic flights are available in Chubu, allowig tourists to make swift connections if they are travelling across the country. Low cost airlines also offer both international and domestic flights in Chubu, such as Jetstar Japan.

If you are flying to Japan you can find the cheapest flights on Jetradar.

The city does have a second airport and it is Nagoya Airfield. However, this airfield is only used for domestic flights under Fuji Dream Airlines.

Nagoya is often considered a great hub for visitors who wish to see areas like the Kiso Valley, Takayama, Ise Bay and Kyoto. Trips to these popular destinations would only take an hour’s trip thanks to the efficient train network in the city and its surrounding areas. If you wish to stay around the city, Nagoya hosts many festivals and events throughout the year which would catch the imagination of all those who visit its domain.

Where to Stay in Nagoya?

Like Tokyo and other Japanese cities, Nagoya is divided into different wards. The city has 16 of them, easily accessible through its extensive train and road network. Trains in the city are handled by different companies such as Meitetsu, Kintetsu, Nagoya Subway and JR Central.

Both Meitetsu and Kintetsu lines and JR Central offer connections to regional areas close to the city, while Nagoya Subway gives tourists a chance to visit the rest of the area.

Here are the four major neighborhoods in Nagoya you can consider when picking your accommodations for your Nagoya stay:

Naka Ward

Naka Ward or Naka-ku can be considered as the city’s center and was one of the four original wards of the city. As the city center, you would be able to see both traditional sites and modern buildings within the area. For those who wish to learn more about the city’s history, Naka-ku is where you can find the iconic Nagoya Castle and the shrines such as Osu Kannon and the Bansho-ji.

For museum lovers, the area is the home of the Nagoya City Art Museum. Shoppers can also enjoy great discounts and bargains in areas like Osu Kannon’s Shopping District.

Sakae Town

Sakae is technically a part of Naka-ku, but it was originally separated from the main city center and returned again after the war. Shoppers would definitely want to stay around the area as it gathers three of the largest department stores in the city. They are Matsuzakaya, Mitsukoshi and Maruei Sakae.

For those looking for luxury brands, Yaba-cho Parco, Lachic and Nadya Park are the places to go. Art lovers would also enjoy checking out the Aichi Arts Center and the International Design Centre Nagoya.

Nishi Ward

This area in Nagoya is located on the northwestern portion of the city and can be noted as one of the city’s historical districts. The Sc, originally used by Edo merchants for trade, is located in this area. Museums run by ceramic maker Noritake and car company Toyota are also located here. Visitors can also check out one of the tallest buildings in Japan, the Nagoya Lucent Tower.

Kanayama

The area surrounding Kanayama Station is also a good place to look for accommodations. This area is known as the home to the Nagoya/Boston Museum of Fine Arts, showcasing some of the best Impressionist and Japanese art works each year. Kanayama station is also an important rail hub in the city. From here you can easily travel to the airport and reach other sites like Toyohashi, Inuyama and Gifu.

Budget Accommodation in Nagoya

Cafe & Guest House Nagonoya – a great budget accommodation, with easy access to the metro (Kokusai Center Station).

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Nagoya

Nishitetsu Inn Nagoya Nishiki – an excellent value for the money option in the Naka Ward.

Hotel Vista Nagoya Nishiki – another great hotel to stay in one of the best areas of the city.

Luxurious Hotels in Nagoya

Nagoya Kanko Hotel – a luxurious hotel located in the Naka Ward.

Hotel Nagoya Castle – a sumptuous hotel, located in one of the most prestigious areas of the city.

Cost of Travel in Nagoya

Like visiting other Japanese cities, the cost of travel in Nagoya can be expensive. However, when compared to cities like Tokyo or Osaka, it can be rather affordable.

On average, a traveler would spend roughly ¥10,000 per day while in most medium sized cities in Japan. Discount tickets are also available when travelling around the city and some tickets may even offer discounted entrance fees to the city’s tourist attractions.

nagoya castle

If you want to book attractions and tours in Japan, as well as the Japan Rail Pass, you can do it on Klook.com. If you want to rent a car in Nagoya, you can compare prices on RentalCars.com.

When to Visit Central Japan

This region of Japan has a rather varied climate, which can be tricky if you are planning to visit the city in certain months. If you visit in the summer seasons, some days may be too hot. In winter, it may get pretty cold with eventual snowfall.

The best time of the year to visit Nagoya is during the Spring and Autumn. The weather is perfect to walk around the city during these seasons and ideal for outdoor activities. During spring, tourists flock to Japan for the cherry blossoms, pushing prices up for traveling in general.

If you do not wish to brave the crowds, you can visit the city during the summer season from June to August, or during Winter from December to February.

Kuala Lumpur to Malacca: The Cities

Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia and the most visited city in the country, but Malaysia has much more to offer beyond KL. One of the best cities to visit in the country is Malacca (Melaka).

While Kuala Lumpur is a bustling metropolis and one of the most important capital in Southeast Asia, Malacca City has a completely different atmosphere. The coastal city of Malacca, or Melaka in Malay, is roughly 150 km from Kuala Lumpur, and is definitely worth visiting.

The city’s history is rich, as the ruling powers changed hands in the city during the past centuries. Malacca was a Sultanate and an important trading point for Chinese trade, followed by a becoming a Portuguese trading point and a Dutch fort. Later it became part of the British Empire, before the independence of Malaysia.

Today Malacca city is one of the most interesting places to visit in Malaysia, notably for its architecture, including important buildings from its colonial past. Malacca is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Kuala Lumpur to Malacca: Transport Available

The best and the most efficient way to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca is by bus. There is a high availability in terms of schedules and companies operating the system. The trip is uncomplicated and rather short, as we will see below.

Let’s check below the options on how to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca.

Kuala Lumpur to Malacca (Melaka) by Bus

Most buses leaving from Kuala Lumpur depart from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan, the main bus station in the city. You can get to the TBS easily using the KTM trains or the KLIA transit trains. From the KL Sentral you are just four stops to the TBS. To get to the TBS you must stop at the Bandar Tasik Selatan Station.

In most cases, when arriving in Malacca you will arrive at the Melaka Sentral Station, the biggest in the city. The Melaka Sentral Station is rather far from the most interesting sights in Malacca, such as the Jonker Walk. You will still need to get a taxi or use the public transport to the get to the most central areas of Malacca from the bus station.

The bus ride from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka takes about 2 hours. Since the road distance between Kuala Lumpur and Malacca is pretty short, you can even visit it on a day trip. The transport infrastructure and the road standards in the route are pretty modern and safe.

Here is a short timetable from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca (Melaka) buses:

Bus Kuala Lumpur - Malacca $ 2.93–3.69 2h 12m – 3h 22m

Germany Job Market: Overview

Some of the poorest regions in Germany are: Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Thüringen.

Germany and Europe

While salaries in Germany are above the average for the EEA, they are not the highest in the economic bloc. Countries like Luxembourg, Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden have higher average salaries than Germany.

Germany Minijob: What is a Mini-job and Should I Consider it?

If you are new to Germany and the main reason for your arrival is not employed, you may want to consider a minijob.

A minijob is a special type of employment in which the employee is set to work part-time and earn a maximum of 450 euros per month.

The minijob is appealing for employers, as they do not have to pay health insurance for the employees (the government pays it).

For the employees, minijobs are also appealing. If you are a student for example, or if you take care of your children at home, a minijob can be an excellent option to boost your income.

Most minijobs are low skilled, like cook assistant, cleaners, supermarket staff. Since adding even 1 euro to the salary would mean a much higher cost to the employers (insurance is pretty expensive), minijobs are meant to stay as minijobs.

More info on minijobs available here.

Do I need to Speak German to Get a Job in Germany?

The general answer would be yes, but it is not always the case. There are basically two types of jobs in Germany that do not require speaking good German.

The first category of jobs that do not require speaking English are those related to tech and international companies. For those looking for a job in a multinational, or in a tech startup, often times German is not a requirement.

Example of these jobs are: mobile developer, software developer, QA engineer, UX/UI designer, etc.

The second category of jobs that do not require speaking German are those who basically have no contact with the public.

Some examples of these jobs are: cleaner, cook, truck driver, forklift operator.

In both of the categories, it will be to the company’s discretion to hire or not people that do not speak German.

Can Foreign Students Work in Germany?

If you are a citizen of the European Union, in virtually all cases, there are no restrictions to the job market in Germany. However if you are a foreign student, things are not that simple.

While it is possible to work while you study in Germany, specific rules apply. Mostly, you can work part-time during your studies and full time during your vacations.

More information can be found at the DAAD website.

cost of living in bucharest

Cost of Living in Bucharest, Romania

Bucharest is by far the biggest city in Romania and it’s one of the biggest cities in Europe. With an official population of over 2 million and an unofficial one of over 3 million, it is a very vibrant city.

Bucharest still has the scars of communism over it, with big grey buildings that have a grim utilitarian feeling. The city also has houses and mansions from different styles, including Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Strolling down the streets you will notice a sharp and clear contrast between these styles.

Besides the architecture, there are not many other indicators that this was a communist country for nearly 45 years. Bucharest has quickly reinvented itself into a dynamic European capital. Currently, it is a multicultural city that is still growing and is far off from its maximum potential.

As a side effect of this, the cost of living is on the rise and it’s comparable with cities like Budapest, Prague or Krakow. While food and transportation is still quite affordable, the cost of accommodations is growing steadily, with more affluent areas being off limits to regular locals. There are places where only the most well-off Romanians and expats can afford. All in all, the city as a whole is still more affordable than other larger cities in Europe.

Let’s check some data for the cost of living in Bucharest, Romania below:

The currency in Romania is the Romanian Leu. The conversion rate to the RON is 1 dollar to 4.75 RON as of November 22, 2024.

Generally, tuition costs will range from 1000 to 5000 euros a year for foreigners(depending on your citizenship and the degree). University cycles usually last from three to four years, depending on the educational profile.

Some universities also offer English only courses, aimed mostly at expats and Romanians looking to work in a multinational environment.

Academy of Economic Studies

moldova chisinau

Cost of Living in Chisinau, Moldova

Chisinau is the biggest city in Moldova. Being the capital of the country, it will provide you with the best option from a quality of life point of view. It is still an emerging Eastern European city coming with all the good and bad of such a city.

It is full of vibrant life, young people looking to make the most out of their lives, tasting the freedom that new opportunities usually provide. While expats are still a rare sight within the city, more and more foreigners are coming to the city, be it as turists or as working professionals. It is the perfect time to get ahead of the curve and set down roots in this future prosperous urban centre.

As it is still an uncut diamond, the cost of living is very low. You can find good amenities at good prices as well as food that was grown in local farmer’s gardens. Cost of Living for Students in Chisinau, Moldova

Chisinau is a good place for students to live in. However, as a general note, the Universities here are not very popular by people outside of the country. Regardless of this however, if you decide to go study in Chisinau, you will be very lucky.

While the night-life is very abundant and you can find many things to occupy your time with, the city will offer all of its prospects at a very low price. Besides this, accommodations can be found at a very low price. Getting a high enough admission grade will grant you a place in a dormitory where everything is paid for, besides the monthly admin fee.

Very important to note is that tuition fees are around 500 EUR per year. Universities vary in length based on the type of degree you are going after. So, Bachelour of Arts usually takes 3 years to complete, while a Bachelour of Law or of Science takes 4 years.

Here are some of the top Universities in Chisinau:

State University of Moldova

Technical University of Moldova

Academy of Economic Studies from Moldova

Getting a Job in Chisinau

Chisinau has a very up and coming feel to it. There aren’t a lot of available jobs where English is the only spoken language. However, there are more and more international companies that are opening offices there due to the skilled labour and lower costs associated.

Another option is for Russian speakers, as you can find work a bit easier this way. Moldova still has business relationships with Russia from the times of the Soviet Union. You will find a lot of people, mostly the better educated ones, still speak Russian as their main language.

However, don’t be discouraged, good professionals are in great demand in Moldova. The country is suffering from an acute brain drain, making high paying jobs a frequent occurrence for very skilled individuals. However, such positions still garner a lower wage than their equivalent in more powerful countries such as Romania, Hungary or Slovakia, to name a few from its vicinity.

Here are some websites for job hunting in Chisinau:

Quality of Life in Chisinau

In Chisinau, you will get almost all of the benefits from living in a European Capital. It is a very safe city with maybe only petty crime to look out for. The city offers a lot of restaurants and bars, so entertainment is not an issue. Finally, the increasing number of flights to the capital is making Chisinau more accessible in recent years.

Amongst the negative aspects in Chisinau the bureaucracy is certainly high, especially for a non-native speaker. The transport infrastructure is pretty lacking as well as public transportation, which has a lot of room for improvements.

However, as an emerging capital city, the trend is overall positive for Chisinau’s infrastructure and quality of life.

If you are visiting Chisinau soon you may want to check some of our other Moldova guides. Check the where to stay in Chisinau. You can also check the our article on how to find a job in Moldova, and the average and minimum salary in Moldova.

Are you considering to move or retire in Montenegro? This guide brings useful information on how to make your relocation to Montenegro viable and inexpensive.

In this post will analyze the advantages and disadvantages of living in Montenegro. Learn how to get to Montenegro, open a bank account in Montenegro, and about the cost of living in this beautiful Balkan Nation

Retire in Montenegro: Overview

Montenegro is one of the youngest countries in the world, but it certainly has a rich history. Montenegro got independent from Serbia in 2006, as its outcome is related to the Yugoslavian dissolution. Unlike in countries like Croatia and Bosnia, the independence process in Montenegro was peaceful.

The country is one of the most beautiful in Europe. It has a magnificent sea side on the Adriatic, and is almost entirely covered by the Dinaric Alps.

Montenegro is one of the most affordable summer destinations in Europe. It is also one of the least populated countries in Europe, with a population under 700.000 inhabitants.

Getting to Montenegro

Getting to Montenegro is quite easy if you are in Europe. However, if you are traveling from other continents, there are no direct flights to this small Balkan nation.

The number of direct flights to Montenegro has increased over the past few years, and the trend looks quite positive. The main airports in the country are Podgorica Airport in the capital, and the Tivat Airport, serving the Adriatic Coast with mostly summer flights.

Montenegro is also accessible by road, train or seaside. Despite its mountainous relief, Montenegro has a very privileged location in Europe, therefore it is easily accessible by land or sea from a number of countries, including its Balkan neighbors and Greece (by land and sea) and Italy (by sea).

Opening a Bank Account in Montenegro

Always when moving temporarily or permanently to a new country, you may want to consider opening a bank account. Having a local bank account in Montenegro will certainly make things easier if you are staying in the country for longer periods. Apart from paying less transactions fees to local accounts and purchases, some services are available only for domestic accounts.

retire in montenegro

Having a bank account in Montenegro also saves you from paying high fees while withdrawing money in Montenegro. The good news is that Montenegro uses the Euro, even if its not part of the European Union or the Eurozone. This is definitely a good thing as there are less changes your funds will not suffer from eventual currency fluctuations.

There are banks operating in Montenegro, most of them are owned by bigger banking groups based in the European Union. Most Montenegrin banks have a deposit guarantee of up to 50.000 euros. Banking in the country is really easy and mostly a good idea, even if you are not planning to retire in Montenegro.

Here are some of the biggest banks in Montenegro by market share.

PRVA BANKA CG
SOCIETE GENERALE Owned by Societe Generale (France)
NLB BANKA
Hipotekarna Banka
ERSTE Bank Owned by ERSTE Group (Austria)
Crnogorska komercijalna banka Owned by OTP (Hungary)

Most banks in Montenegro will allow you to open a bank account as a non-resident or resident. To open a bank account in Montenegro as a non-resident you will need to provide your passport or id. Sometimes you will also need to provide a proof of residence of issued in your country of origin, however the requirements can change at the bank’s discretion.

Getting your Montenegro Residence Permit

Getting a residence permit in Montenegro is quite easy and inexpensive. Since Montenegro is not in the EU, it is easy to get a permit to live in Montenegro regardless of your citizenship.

While in most EU countries the options are pretty limited for Non-EU citizens, in Montenegro you can easily relocate to a privileged location in Europe. This is a great advantage if you are not an EU citizen and want to retire in Montenegro.

There are two ways I recommend as a path to get a residence permit in Montenegro. The first is buying real estate in the country. The second is opening  company in Montenegro. Both ways will create grounds for you to apply for a residence permit in the country.

open bank account montenegro

Opening a company in Montenegro is a quite simple and inexpensive process. It is the easiest choice to establish your residence in Montenegro. You do not necessarily operate the business you open actively, but there are fixed yearly costs with running it.

Montenegro taxes are also quite low, especially for European standards. Income tax is just 9% in the country.

Montenegro Citizenship by Investment

Recently Montenegro followed other countries like Cyprus and Malta, and now offers citizenship by investment. The starting investment to qualify for it is of 350,000 euros.

Another path to obtain citizenship in Montenegro is living a number of years in Montenegro. This option does not require an investment in the country.

Montenegro Cost of Living

The cost of living is also one of the most relevant factors for those willing to move or relocate overseas. Let’s analyze the cost of living in Montenegro including costs with groceries and internet, transport and real estate.

Overall, the cost of living in Montenegro is considerably lower than those of North America and Western Europe. Real estate prices in Montenegro are relatively high, especially on the coast. Transport and groceries are quite inexpensive, while internet is relatively expensive.

Real estate prices in Montenegro are variable, depending on the location you choose. The coast is mostly expensive, especially in the areas of Kotor, Tivat, and Budva. The capital Podgorica has variable prices depending on the area, and the countryside offers real bargains.

Barcelona or Valencia, which is the best city to visit? This guide provides insights on the aspects and cost of travel of visiting these two Spanish cities.

Are you planning a trip to Spain but don’t know whether to visit Valencia or Barcelona? It’s a difficult decision, after all. Both cities are on Spain’s east coast and offer sea, sunshine, and sand all year round! They also have fascinating historic centres with plenty of attractions. So, how do you decide which is better – Barcelona or Valencia?

If you’ve been to both cities already, you’ll probably have a clear preference. First time travellers have a little more research to do, and that’s where we can help you. In this article, we’ll compare the key aspects you’re looking for on a city break. Then, we’ll be able to answer which is better: Barcelona or Valencia?

Overview of Barcelona

Barcelona is the capital of Spain’s Catalonia region, and has a heritage that it is rightly proud of. The city is famed for art and architecture, especially the work of its most famous son, Antonio Gaudi.

barcelona or valencia

As well as the plethora of attractions in the city centre, it also boasts golden sand beaches, and scenic views from Montserrat Mountain and the Bunkers de Carmel. Sports fans shouldn’t miss out on the Camp Nou, home of FC Barcelona!

Overview of Valencia

Valencia is the 3rd biggest city by population in Spain, but it’s just over a third of the size of Barcelona. It’s more compact but still has plenty to offer. A vibrant city centre full of historic attractions and a vibrant nightlife scene can’t be missed.

valencia or barcelona
Valencia

Outside of the centre, you’ll find the futuristic Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias. It’s the most popular draw of Valencia, and also one of the 12 treasures of Spain.

Barcelona vs Valencia: Nightlife

Valencia isn’t one for big and glitzy clubs. However, there are several small disco bars where you can have a dance and a chat over a few drinks. Barcelona has everything you could wish for from its nightlife. Both cities don’t get busy ‘til after midnight, so it’s likely you’ll be taking a taxi home!

Barcelona vs Valencia: Sightseeing

The list of things to do in Barcelona is probably longer than your arm. Visiting Gaudi’s architecture alone includes Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, Park Guëll, and the still incomplete Sagrada Familia. The Gothic Quarter, Picasso’s House and Museum, and Montjuïc should also be on your itinerary. There’s enough for a week, rather than your standard long weekend city break.

There’s plenty to see in Valencia too. The ultramodern Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias is attached to L’Oceanogràfic, which houses dolphins and other marine life. In the city centre, don’t miss the UNESCO listed La Lonja de la Seda. However, due to sheer volume and quality of attractions – Barcelona wins!

Barcelona vs Valencia: Old Town

Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella is alive with character and charm. Tapas bars with legs of jamón hanging from the ceiling and cañas flowing line narrow streets and cobbled squares. The one downside is that it gets very crowded! Valencia has one of the largest historic centres in Europe with over 1,000 years of history. You’ll see Roman, Moor, and Visigoth architecture throughout the city, so it’s a history buff’s dream. It’s also full of places to eat, drink, and be merry. Therefore, Valencia wins!

Barcelona vs Valencia: Cost of Travel

Valencia is no secret, but it’s still a lot less travelled than Barcelona. That really comes into play when considering the cost of travel. Valencia average daily travel price is a whopping €39 cheaper than Barcelona. That’s €76 daily average vs €115! There can only be one winner.

Barcelona vs Valencia: Food and Restaurants

Probably the best-known Spanish dish of all, paella, hails from Valencia. There are several variations, but don’t miss the traditional version which consists of chicken, rabbit, and white beans. Turrón, popular at Christmas, also has its roots in Valencia.

Catalan cuisine is excellent, and you can’t go to Barcelona without enjoying the tapas. The food markets such as Mercat Boqueria and Sant Antoni Market are colourful and fresh!

Verdict: Thanks to paella, the point goes to Valencia.

Barcelona vs Valencia: Transportation

A HOLA Bcn pass will cover metro, buses, trams, and RENFE suburban trains and offers tickets for up to 5 days at a time. This will help you avoid paying extortionate taxi fees! Valencia is easier to navigate on foot than Barcelona, but also has an extensive transport network. Thanks to more international flights from the city’s airport, Barcelona takes the crown here.
