Where to stay in Tashkent, Uzbekistan? Discover the best areas to stay in Tbilisi in this post, the capital city of this thriving Central Asian country

Tashkent is the capital city of Uzbekistan and it’s the largest city in the country. When it comes to tourism it can’t boast the architecture and charm of Samarkand and Bukhara, but that shouldn’t put you off visiting. Tashkent is a vibrant and bustling capital with plenty to see and do!

tashkent uzbekistan

If you’re travelling to Tashkent, we imagine you’ll be wondering about the best places to stay. You’re in luck! We’ve taken a look at the coolest neighbourhoods in Tashkent so that you can easily plan your visit.

Travel in Tashkent: Overview

If you want to discover Central Asia, Tashkent is a great place to start. Locals are welcoming and friendly, while there’s plenty of things to do in town. Its location means that the culture is a mixture of Russian, Asian, and Middle Eastern. Think traditional Islamic mosques rubbing shoulders with 20th century Soviet towers. Some of the most beautiful buildings include the grand Tashkent Opera House and the Khast Imom complex. You’ll find the older Quran in the world here!

The food is another reason to visit. Head to the Chorsu Bazaar to try local fresh produce, including bread which bakes upside down. Oh, and if you need to anything, be sure to haggle.

Overall, this is a great city to start your Central Asian adventure. So, let’s take a closer look at the best places to stay.

If you are traveling to Uzbekistan the best option is flying to the Tashkent International Airport. Uzbekistan Airlines has direct flights from Tashkent to many cities in Asia and Europe.

To book train tickets to and inside the country you can check the Uzbekistan Railways website. The country has some pretty modern trains, not in all routes though.

Best Areas to stay in Tashkent

As you’d expect from a capital city, Tashkent is pretty big. There are lots of neighbourhoods across this sprawling metropolis, so how can you know which is the best one to choose? We’ve researched a few different options to help you plan your stay in Tashkent. Each neighbourhood offers a unique flavour of the city.

Neighbourhoods come with their own advantages and disadvantages. There are a lot of hotels around the UZ Expo Centre, but it’s quite expensive! Another area worth looking at is around Mirabad Street, Tashkent’s predominantly Korean neighbourhood.

However, we’ve decided to take a closer look at Eski Shahar, the Old Town, and the area around Opera Square. There is also a new shopping mall that goes by the same name “Eski Shahar”.

Eski Shahar (Old Town)

Eski Shahar is probably the most characterful neighbourhood in Tashkent. Not only that, but it’s also home to two of the city’s most prominent attractions. These are the Chorsu Bazaar and Khast Imam.

You’ll notice that Tashkent is full of high-rise buildings, but not here. Single storey flank either side of the winding streets, creating a cosy and homely atmosphere. After all, this is largely a residential area. Vacation rental apartments have recently been legalised in Uzbekistan, so this is a good spot to look for something traditional. The main metro station in the Old Town is called Chorsu.

Opera Square

There are two main parts of Tashkent. One is the Old Town, which we’ve just explored, while the other is the New Town. That’s the area based around Opera Square and Amir Timur Square. We’ve chosen to focus specifically on Opera Square, as Amur Timur is a little less central. However, you can find some great places to eat and drink there!

If you want to head to the Tashkent’s 3 main museums, then Opera Square is a good place to stay. One of these museums is the State Museum of Uzbekistan! It’s also just a short distance from the Anhor Canal.

As well as a number of hotels in this area, you’ll also find some of the best places to eat in Tashkent. Try a plate of Plov (like a pilaf rice dish) and some tea at one of the many local tea houses. The closest metro station to Opera Square is Kosmonavtlar.

Last of all, if you are staying here, don’t miss visiting the spectacular Alisher Navoï Opera. It’s one of the most impressive buildings in Tashkent, and there are regular ballet and opera performances!

Budget Accommodation in Tashkent – $

ALPHA HOSTEL  – a modern hostel at a prime location, with easy access to the metro and the city center.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Tashkent – $$

ELITE HOTEL – an excellent hotel offering great value for the money in one of the best areas of Tashkent.

Sharq Hotel – a great hotel with easy access to the Kosmonavtlar Metro Station

Luxurious Hotels in Tashkent – $$$

Hyatt Regency Tashkent – a high end hotel in Tashkent with a beautiful interior.

Wyndham Tashkent – another luxurious option to stay in the capital of Uzbekistan.

Cost of travelling in Tashkent

How much does it cost to travel in Tashkent? That’s a tricky question to answer. Although the cost of living is generally quite cheap, accommodation isn’t. Budget hotels and hostels are a rarity here, so you might feel you’re paying quite a lot for what you get.

Eating out, travelling around the city, and visiting monuments is quite cheap though. For example, you can get fast food for as little as a dollar, and few restaurants will cost more than $10. Even high-end ones! Also, the metro only costs around $0.20 US for a single journey!

On the flip side, travel to and from Uzbekistan is quite expensive. However recently the country has relaxed its visa policy, making it considerably easier to get into the country.

Best Months to Visit Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is not a very touristy country (yet), so there is not a season in which the country is overcrowded. However, seasons are rather extreme.

Summer in Tashkent is pretty hot, with temperatures rather frequently going above 35 C (95 F). In winter, temperatures are often freezing. For that reason, the best time to visit Uzbekistan is definitely during Spring, in the months of April, May and early June. Another good option is early Autumn (September and early October).

What is the best way to travel from Venice to Ljubljana? In this post we’ll discuss whether it’s better to travel by train, bus, or car

Do you want to travel between Venice and Ljubljana or vice versa? This useful guide can help you get between one of Italy’s most popular cities and the Slovenian capital.

venice to ljubljana

Venice to Ljubljana: The route

The fastest route by road from Venice to Ljubljana is around 242km and can be done in under 3 hours.

Venice is one of the top tourist destinations in Italy, a romantic city known for its canals. That’s not all though, it’s home to beautiful street food, renaissance architecture, and romantic gondola rides.

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, and you can spend hours walking around its pretty Old Town. Outdoor cafes line the Ljubljanica River, a perfect place to take a break and people watch the locals. It’s also just a short journey from Lake Bled, one of the most beautiful sights in Slovenia!

Although the cities are close, they’re separated by an international border. And although both countries are in the Schengen Zone and there are no border controls, travelling between the two cities is a little more complicated than it might be if you were just going to be in one country!

Venice to Ljubljana by train

It is possible to travel between Venice and Ljubljana; however, you can’t go directly between the two cities. The quickest way to travel by train between Venice and Ljubljana is by making a stop in Trieste Centrale. In total, the journey will take around 5 hours (factoring in 15 minutes to change). That’s roughly 2 hours between Venice and Trieste, and 2.5 hours between Trieste and Ljubljana.

There are other journeys which involve a stop at Villach in Austria. But these journeys take even longer than the 5 hours making a stop in Trieste. The train is sometimes a more comfortable way to travel than bus, however between Venice and Ljubljana it is definitely slower.

You can also combine a bus and train journey, but this is still slower than taking a direct bus between the two cities.

How to buy train tickets from Venice to Ljubljana

The best options for buying train tickets from Venice to Ljubljana are

Trainline – A reliable website for getting European train tickets at the lowest prices.

Trenitalia – The Italian national rail service. It’s possible to check train times between Venice and Ljubljana through their website. However, it’s only possible to purchase for the Italian leg of your journey.

Venice to Ljubljana by bus

There are multiple departures in both directions per day. Prices to travel between Ljubljana and Venice range from €12 – 35, depending your departure time. The majority of routes are direct and take between 2.75 and 4.5 hours.

When buying your bus tickets from either city, make sure you get to your departure point plenty of time before the bus is due to leave. Also, as there are multiple departure points, so double check you’re heading to the one stated on your ticket!

How to buy bus tickets from Venice to Ljubljana

The best options for buying bus tickets between Venice and the capital of Slovenia are:

Flixbus – A comprehensive selection of both domestic and international bus tickets across Europe. It’s one of the most reliable bus companies in Europe and offers some of the lowest prices too.

Flights from Venice to Ljubljana

Venice to Ljubljana by car

Car is the fastest way to travel between these two cities. It’s probably the most comfortable too, but that doesn’t mean it’s the easiest. Renting a car and travelling to a different country can be tricky, and you may find it’s not worth the hassle. Of course, it’s always worth checking out ride share websites like BlaBlaCar.

ljubljana or zageb

You’ll be able to travel by car but without the expense of difficulties or renting! Rides are usually around €20, but some prices are as low as €11. That’s less than the cheapest bus! Do note though, rides can be cancelled at the last minute and aren’t as reliable as travelling by public transport.

Edinburgh or Glasgow, which is the best city to visit? This guide provides insights on the aspects and cost of travel of visiting these two Scottish cities.

Are you planning a trip to Scotland but don’t know whether it would be better to visit Glasgow or Edinburgh? Scotland’s capital and second city have a fierce rivalry and are proud of their heritage and culture. Both show completely different sides to Scotland, but which one is better for you: Glasgow or Edinburgh?

Edinburgh and Glasgow offer everything you could want from a city break. There are plenty of museums and galleries, festivals and nightlife, and both are close to the stunning Scottish countryside. In this article, we’ll look at the best of both cities and help answer the question: which is better, Glasgow or Edinburgh?

Overview of Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland and the seat of the country’s government. It’s famous for its medieval Old Town and Georgian New Town, either side of the city’s 11th century castle. Extinct volcano Arthur’s Seat offers fantastic views of the city and the Firth of Forth. Edinburgh is also home to the world’s largest arts festival, the Edinburgh Fringe.

Overview of Glasgow

Glasgow is in the west of Scotland, and it’s the country’s largest and most populated city. Scotland’s cultural hub is home to the Scottish Opera, Ballet, and National Theatre. Many famous musicians hail from Glasgow and it still has a vibrant music scene. The city’s role as a port on the River Clyde meant that from the 18th century it was very prosperous. This can be seen in the city’s beautiful Victorian and art nouveau architecture.

Edinburgh vs Glasgow: Nightlife

Both cities are great for going out but offer different experiences. Edinburgh has a range of nightlife venues including cool spots where you can find alternative and folk music. There are some more trendy and hip bars too. In August, the Fringe festival has theatre and comedy shows until the wee small hours.

Glasgow’s music scene is a great start for nightlife, and it doesn’t disappoint. Scotland’s second city really has everything when it comes to nightlife. Whether you want a sophisticated spot for a dram after the theatre, or a wild night out, you’ll find a place. You can enjoy more variation in Glasgow, so it’s the winner here.

Verdict: Glasgow

glasgow or edinburgh

Edinburgh vs Glasgow: Sightseeing

It’s hard to split Edinburgh and Glasgow when it comes to attractions. There are architectural marvels, museums, and parks that you can visit for free in Glasgow. Edinburgh edges it though. History comes alive in Edinburgh as you feel you’re walking through it. Start at the castle and stroll down the Royal Mile. Add in the National Gallery and the National Museum of Scotland before heading to Arthurs Seat. These are just some of the many things to do in the capital.

Verdict: Edinburgh

Edinburgh vs Glasgow: Old Town

Glasgow’s Old City is east of the city centre and close to the Glasgow Cross and Cathedral. It’s known as Old Merchant City. Old Merchant City is a nice place to walk around and there are lots of shops, restaurants, and bars there.

Edinburgh’s Old Town dates back further though, and countless narrow alleys have inspired ghost stories and tales of murder. It’s a pleasant area now though and is home to several great attractions. There are also lots of restaurants and souvenir shops. Thanks to being bigger and older, Edinburgh wins again.

Verdict: Edinburgh

Edinburgh vs Glasgow: Cost of Travel

There’s not much to split these two cities when it comes to travel costs. Both will set you back over £100 a day. In Glasgow, it’s easier to find cheap places to eat which is a lifesaver when travelling on a budget. Edinburgh is especially expensive during the fringe festival in summer, and accommodation prices rocket. Glasgow wins!

Verdict: Glasgow

glasgow scotland

Edinburgh vs Glasgow: Food and Restaurants

Edinburgh has lots of fine dining restaurants and swanky places to eat. Glasgow offers a lot of variation and while there’s some haute-cuisine, it’s easier to find somewhere affordable. Of course, both cities have ample opportunities to try traditional Scottish cuisine like haggis and cranachan. Edinburgh wins by 4 Michelin stars!

Verdict: Edinburgh

Edinburgh vs Glasgow: Transportation

Edinburgh and Glasgow both have extensive bus networks with park and ride facilities. There are several rail connections to the rest of Scotland in the UK. Edinburgh has a recently opened tram service, while Glasgow has the 3rd oldest subway in the world. It’s a draw!

Verdict: Draw

Edinburgh vs Glasgow: Weather

Neither Glasgow nor Edinburgh are blessed with great weather. It’s very changeable in both cities. Whichever one you choose, bring layers and waterproofs.

Verdict: Draw

Edinburgh vs Glasgow: Verdict

Edinburgh is our narrow 3-2 winner! Both cities are great to visit though. Glasgow is a more traditional representation of Scotland whereas Edinburgh caters more for tourists.

Verdict: Edinburgh

Hotels in Glasgow

Motel One Glasgow – a great option close to the Central Train Station in Glasgow.

Mercure Glasgow City Hotel – another excellent option to stay in Glasgow.

Where to stay in Yangon? Check out our guide to the largest and most exciting city in Myanmar, one of the most undiscovered countries in Southeast Asia.

Yangon is no longer the capital city of Myanmar, but it is the biggest city. It’s usually the first on many travellers’ itineraries to the South East Asian country.

As of 2023 travelling to Myanmar is higher restricted and better avoided.

where to stay in Yangon

The skyline is as unusual as it is pretty, with golden pagodas jostling for position against British colonial architecture. Many Buddhists undertake pilgrimages to Yangon’s pagodas, while for tourists, it’s the perfect place to start a Myanmar adventure!

If you’re travelling to Yangon, you’ll probably want to do some research into the best neighbourhoods to stay in town. To help you out, we’ve prepared this handy guide on where to stay in Yangon. Hopefully it’ll make planning your trip a lot easier!

Travel in Yangon: Overview

Although the capital of Myanmar is the newly built city of Naypyidaw, Yangon is still very much the cultural and historical centre. Myanmar has been open to tourists for less than 10 years, so it has a lot of catching up to do compared to its neighbours Thailand and Vietnam. However, for some travellers this makes for a more authentic and rewarding experience.

As of 2021, the political climate in Myanmar is not favorable for visiting the country as a tourist.

But what can you expect from Yangon? The main attractions are definitely its golden pagodas, Shwedagon Paya being the best known. Among the traffic and pollution, there are a number of parks and lakes to escape to and disconnect.

When you’re feeling suitably refreshed, head back into town and try some of Myanmar’s delicious street food. The nation’s cuisine has been heavily influenced by nearby China, India, and Thailand, so there’s plenty of flavour!

If you are flying into Yangon, compare and book tickets using Jetradar. If you are traveling by land in Myanmar, check Bookaway.

Best Areas to stay in Yangon

Yangon is split into 4 different districts. Unsurprisingly, these are North, East, South, and West. These districts are then chopped up into smaller and more manageable neighbourhoods. Most of the best places to stay are concentrated in the East and West districts of Yangon.

The Northern District extends more than 20 miles from the city centre, while South Yangon offers fewer things to do. It’s the smallest and quietest district of Yangon. We’ve decided to explore Bahan in the West and Botataung in the east in this post.

Bahan

Bahan is the most popular area in Yangon for tourists, and it’s not hard to see why. The neighbourhood is at the crossroads of Sule Pagoda Road and Mahabandoola Road, and it’s where you’ll find a lot of the most interesting and important attractions in town.

Yangon’s museums and gardens are in this area of the city, as are some of its best places to eat. It’s also where you’ll find the most popular attraction in Yangon: Shwedagon Pagoda. Visit here during the evening, the best time to see the top of the 2,500 year old golden dome glistening against the night sky.

If you can’t make the pagoda, don’t worry. Even the most budget friendly accommodations have excellent views of the pagodas and are close to the action in Bahan. However, if you’re looking for something a little more upmarket, there are plenty of mid-range and luxurious hotels too.

Botataung

The Eastern District of Yangon is probably the busiest and most populated part of the city. Botataung is probably the most tourist friendly part of this district. This is because it’s home to some of the best-preserved colonial architecture in town. If your taste in old buildings dates a little further back, then of course, there’s a pagoda you can visit, after which the area is named. Like Bahan, there is a wide variety of accommodation options here, from cheap hostels to luxury hotels.

If you’re planning to travel further into Myanmar, then there’s another reason you should consider staying in Botataung. It’s very close to Mingala Taungyunt, another neighbourhood in the Eastern District of Yangon. Here, you’ll find the city’s central railway station. You can even take a circular train from here, which will show you nearby local markets and small towns!

Budget Accommodation in Yangon

Backpacker Hostel – a great budget accommodation in the Botahtaung area of Yangon.

Royal Star Guest House – an excellent guest house with affordable rates in the Downtown area of the city.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Yangon

Eastern Hotel – an excellent value for the money option in the Botataung area.

Diamond Crown Hotel – another great hotel to stay in one of the best areas of Nagoya.

Luxurious Hotels in Yangon

The Strand, Yangon – a luxurious hotel in Downtown Yangon.

Savoy Hotel – a sumptuous hotel, located in one of the best areas of Yangon, Bahan.

Cost of travelling in Yangon

The average cost of travel is around $70 on a day. However, if you’re on a budget you can do it for much less than this. Rather than looking at luxurious hotels, consider a hostel. If you really don’t want to share a room, look a little further out of the city centre and try to get a B & B. Also, when it comes to food, sample Yangon’s incredible street food over a sit-down meal in a restaurant.

Are you considering a longer stay in Yangon, or relocating completely? Surprisingly, Yangon can be extremely expensive in this case. If you’re looking to rent an apartment, most landlords expats to pay for a year in advance.

Best time to Visit Myanmar

Myanmar has a similar climate to the neighboring Thailand (at least for most of its regions). Therefore, it would be ideal to avoid the rainy season.

best places to stay in Yangon

From November to January, precipitation is not high, and temperatures are relatively mild. From February through April, rainfall is still low, but the temperatures are more extreme, with very hot days frequently. The rainy season is from May to September.

Madrid or Lisbon, Which is the best city to visit? This guide will provide insights on the nightlife, sightseeing, cost of travel and other aspects of visiting these two Iberian cities.

Taking a trip to the Iberian Peninsula but can’t decide if you’d rather visit the Madrid or Lisbon? Two of Western Europe’s cheapest capital cities present an intriguing destination for a city break. Both cities have vibrant nightlife, cool culinary scenes, and plenty of sights to see. But which is better, Madrid or Lisbon?

Madrid vs Lisbon
Palacio de Cibeles, Madrid.

If you speak Spanish or Portuguese, you’ll definitely have a clear preference. But for those who don’t speak either language, how can you know which is the best to visit? That’s where we come in. In this article, we’ll compare the most important aspects people look for in a city break. Then, we’ll answer the question, which is better – Madrid or Lisbon?

Overview of Madrid

Madrid is the capital of Spain and located in the centre of the country. It’s not known for one thing in particular, but that means there’s lots to get excited about in the city. Visit world-renowned art at the Prado Gallery or the Reina Sofia. Or simply stroll through the manicured and well-kept parks and along wide boulevards before heading to a restaurant or club in the evening.

Overview of Lisbon

Portuguese capital Lisbon has one big advantage over Madrid – it has the sea. Nearby beach towns Cascais and Estoril offer relief from the big city. Lisbon is the smaller of the two capitals, but packs a lot in. The Moorish Castelo São Jorge sits atop one of numerous hills above the narrow winding streets that criss-cross the city. In that mix, there are several historical sites, museums, and galleries, as well as a thriving culinary scene!

Madrid vs Lisbon: Nightlife

Madrid has one of the best nightlife scenes in Europe, so Lisbon is going to have to try hard to beat it. There’s so much variation here. From hole in the wall tapas joints where you can enjoy a caña of Mahou with some jamón ibérico, Flamenco shows serving class cocktails, Madrid has something for everyone. Most hostels offer bar crawls that end in one of the city’s superclubs.

Lisbon is a little more toned down when it comes to nightlife, but that’s no bad thing. One of the best areas to head to is the Barrio Alto, where there are over 100 charming bars and restaurants. Don’t miss a traditional fado performance while you’re here! You’ll not be disappointed with either city’s nightlife, but Madrid wins.

Verdict: Madrid

Madrid vs Lisbon: Sightseeing

Lisbon has plenty of attractions in the city centre. Taking Tram 28 passes by the majority of them before ending up at Castelo São Jorge. Further out, you also have the Jerónimos Monastery and Tower of Belem. Even further, you can visit the picturesque town of Sintra which boasts a fairy-tale castle!

Madrid has plenty too – the Royal Palace is definitely worth a visit. A more curious site is the Templo de Debod, an Egyptian temple reconstructed in the city centre. Take a day trip to El Escoreal where members of Spain’s royalty are buried.

madrid or lisbon

Verdict: Lisbon, just!

Madrid vs Lisbon: Old Town

Madrid has some narrow streets surrounding Plaza Mayor which give an idea of the Hapsburg Era. However, the Alfama District in Lisbon offers plenty of restaurants, bars, and places to stay. It’s also where you’ll find the castle! Point to Lisbon.

Verdict: Lisbon

Madrid vs Lisbon: Cost of Travel

Both cities are surprisingly cheap for Western European capital cities. You can make your trip as cheap or expensive as you like, but average costs are $99 per day for Madrid and $89 for Lisbon. Therefore, Lisbon wins!

Verdict: Lisbon

Madrid vs Lisbon: Food and Restaurants

Madrid has everything when it comes to food. Michelin-star restaurants are next to tiny tapas joints. Although they offer different experiences, you’re guaranteed great food! Lisbon is fantastic too, and you should not miss traditional Pasteis de Nata from Belem. However, they can’t topple Madrid off its perch!

Verdict: Madrid

cost of living in madrid
Madrid

Madrid vs Lisbon: Transportation

Madrid has a very efficient metro system which makes it easy to get around the city. Lisbon has an extensive transport network too, and the old-fashioned trams are an attraction in themselves. For the convenience and efficiency, Madrid is the winner here.

Verdict: Madrid

Madrid vs Lisbon: Weather

Although Lisbon is on the Atlantic Coast, it has a Mediterranean climate and lots of sunshine! Madrid is high up, so at night and in winter it can get very cold. There’s a reason everyone leaves in August for the coast too! The smog traps heat, making the city almost unbearable. Lisbon is cooler in summer, so it wins again!

Verdict: Lisbon

where to stay in lisbon

Madrid vs Lisbon: Verdict

With a narrow 4-3 victory, Lisbon is the winner. However, either city makes for a fantastic city break and the only real option is to visit both!

Verdict: Lisbon. Then take a train to Madrid.

Hotels in Madrid

Best Western Hotel Los Condes – a great hotel right next to the Gran Via.

Hostal Esmeralda – an affordable option in one of the most central areas to stay in Madrid.

Hotels in Lisbon

Inn Bairro Alto Bed & Breakfast – an excellent affordable option to stay in one of the best locations of Lisbon.

Hotel Avenida Palace – one of the most luxurious hotels in Lisbon, with a beautiful architecture and interior design. Just next to the Restauradores square and its metro station.

Tokyo or Osaka? Which is the best city to visit or live? Discover below in this article comparing neighborhoods, nightlife, cost of living and more.

Planning a trip to Japan but don’t know whether it’s better to stay in Tokyo or Osaka? Japan’s eastern and western capitals have the ultimate urban rivalry. They are both excellent tourist destinations and you’ll certainly find plenty to keep you entertained. But which one is better, Tokyo or Osaka?

tokyo vs osaka

Tokyo and Osaka are both ultra-modern cities that are still in touch with their proud histories. In this article, we’ll take a look at the best of both cities before answering the question everyone wants to know. So, let’s find out which is better: Tokyo or Osaka?

Overview of Tokyo

Tokyo has been the capital of Japan since 1869. It’s the 6th largest city in the world with over 13.6 million inhabitants. The city shows many aspects of Japanese culture – from traditional temples and shrines to super modern technology districts. Famous temples Sensō-Ji and Meiji Jingu offer a little peace in the hustle and bustle of the city, while Harajuku is a great place to see the newest and coolest fashion trends.

Overview of Osaka

The port of Osaka is in the west of Honshu Island and the 3rd biggest city in Japan. However, its population of around 2.7 million means it is only around 1/5 of the size of Tokyo. It’s well-known for its street food, lively nightlife, and modern architecture. Osaka boasts one of the largest aquariums in the world, where you can see a whale shark. The most popular attraction, however, is its 16th century castle.

Tokyo or Osaka: Nightlife

You’ll see the word Nomihoudai in Osaka, which translates into English roughly as all you can drink. This means a cheap and fun night out and can sometimes be paired with delicious street food too. The party scene is safe, lively, and Osakan people are said to be more friendly than those from Tokyo. Tokyo has lots of cool nightlife too – themed cafes shouldn’t be missed, but Osaka wins on nightlife!

Verdict: Osaka

osaka
Osaka, Japan

Tokyo or Osaka: Sightseeing

There is so much to see in Tokyo that after a week you’ll have barely scratched the surface. Shrines like Sensō-Ji and Meiji Jingu take you back to the Edo period. The Tokyo Sky Tree and Tokyo Tower offer fantastic views sometimes to Mount Fuji. And of course, there’s the famous Shibuya Crossing. Osaka also has plenty too – its most popular attraction is its castle and the aquarium is a sight to behold. However, thanks to the sheer volume, Tokyo wins this category.

Verdict: Tokyo

Tokyo or Osaka: Neighbourhoods

Tokyo and Osaka are made up of several neighbourhoods that offer different experiences of the city. In Osaka, Shinsaibasi is a great shopping district, Namba is the entertainment hub, and Nakazakicho is traditional and quaint. However, Tokyo takes the prize when it comes to neighbourhoods. Akihabara is a crazy futuristic electronic mish mash. Asakusa takes you back to the old Edo period, and Shinjuku is a huge city within a huge city.

Verdict: Tokyo

Tokyo or Osaka: Cost of Travel

The cost of travel in Tokyo is ¥4,000 more per day than in Osaka. To put that into perspective, that’s almost $40. Nightlife, food, and accommodation is all cheaper in Osaka, and Osakans love a freebie. Add all you can eat/drink bars and restaurants into that, and there can only be one winner.

Verdict: Osaka

Tokyo or Osaka: Food and Restaurants

Tokyo has more Michelin starred restaurants than any other city in the world. Sushi, soba, and tempura all come from Tokyo too. So, it should be cut and dried that it wins this category, right? Well, it’s not that simple. Osaka’s street food scene is unrivalled in Japan, and dishes like okonomiyaki and takoyaki have become staples across the country. Osaka is also much cheaper than Tokyo!

Verdict: Osaka

Tokyo or Osaka: Transportation

Osaka and Tokyo both have excellent public transport networks. Tokyo has metro, bus, overground trains and shinkansen (bullet trains) to much of Honshu island. The centre for this is Shinjuku Station, the biggest train station in the world.

A JR East rail pass means you can use some of the over ground trains and most of the shinkansen. Osaka is smaller but also has a public transport that runs like clockwork. It’s easier to travel here when renting a car, as roads are wider and there’s less on them than Tokyo!

Verdict: Tokyo

Tokyo

Tokyo or Osaka: Weather

Both cities have 4 distinct seasons. There’s not a major difference in the weather, but Tokyo is a little cooler as it’s further north. Especially in winter! Both cities are breath-taking in spring aka cherry blossom season.

Verdict: Osaka

Tokyo or Osaka: Verdict

Verdict: With a narrow 4-3 victory, Osaka wins. You shouldn’t miss visiting either city if you have the chance to visit both though. You’ll see two completely different sides of Japan!

Verdict: Osaka

Barcelona or Valencia, which is the best city to visit? This guide provides insights on the aspects and cost of travel of visiting these two Spanish cities.

Are you planning a trip to Spain but don’t know whether to visit Valencia or Barcelona? It’s a difficult decision, after all. Both cities are on Spain’s east coast and offer sea, sunshine, and sand all year round! They also have fascinating historic centres with plenty of attractions. So, how do you decide which is better – Barcelona or Valencia?

If you’ve been to both cities already, you’ll probably have a clear preference. First time travellers have a little more research to do, and that’s where we can help you. In this article, we’ll compare the key aspects you’re looking for on a city break. Then, we’ll be able to answer which is better: Barcelona or Valencia?

Overview of Barcelona

Barcelona is the capital of Spain’s Catalonia region, and has a heritage that it is rightly proud of. The city is famed for art and architecture, especially the work of its most famous son, Antonio Gaudi.

barcelona or valencia

As well as the plethora of attractions in the city centre, it also boasts golden sand beaches, and scenic views from Montserrat Mountain and the Bunkers de Carmel. Sports fans shouldn’t miss out on the Camp Nou, home of FC Barcelona!

Overview of Valencia

Valencia is the 3rd biggest city by population in Spain, but it’s just over a third of the size of Barcelona. It’s more compact but still has plenty to offer. A vibrant city centre full of historic attractions and a vibrant nightlife scene can’t be missed.

valencia or barcelona
Valencia

Outside of the centre, you’ll find the futuristic Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias. It’s the most popular draw of Valencia, and also one of the 12 treasures of Spain.

Barcelona vs Valencia: Nightlife

Valencia isn’t one for big and glitzy clubs. However, there are several small disco bars where you can have a dance and a chat over a few drinks. Barcelona has everything you could wish for from its nightlife. Both cities don’t get busy ‘til after midnight, so it’s likely you’ll be taking a taxi home!

Verdict: Barcelona

Barcelona vs Valencia: Sightseeing

The list of things to do in Barcelona is probably longer than your arm. Visiting Gaudi’s architecture alone includes Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, Park Guëll, and the still incomplete Sagrada Familia. The Gothic Quarter, Picasso’s House and Museum, and Montjuïc should also be on your itinerary. There’s enough for a week, rather than your standard long weekend city break.

There’s plenty to see in Valencia too. The ultramodern Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias is attached to L’Oceanogràfic, which houses dolphins and other marine life. In the city centre, don’t miss the UNESCO listed La Lonja de la Seda. However, due to sheer volume and quality of attractions – Barcelona wins!

Verdict: Barcelona

Barcelona vs Valencia: Old Town

Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella is alive with character and charm. Tapas bars with legs of jamón hanging from the ceiling and cañas flowing line narrow streets and cobbled squares. The one downside is that it gets very crowded! Valencia has one of the largest historic centres in Europe with over 1,000 years of history. You’ll see Roman, Moor, and Visigoth architecture throughout the city, so it’s a history buff’s dream. It’s also full of places to eat, drink, and be merry. Therefore, Valencia wins!

Verdict: Valencia

Barcelona vs Valencia: Cost of Travel

Valencia is no secret, but it’s still a lot less travelled than Barcelona. That really comes into play when considering the cost of travel. Valencia average daily travel price is a whopping €39 cheaper than Barcelona. That’s €76 daily average vs €115! There can only be one winner.

Verdict: Valencia

Valencia Spain Night Street
Valencia

Barcelona vs Valencia: Food and Restaurants

Probably the best-known Spanish dish of all, paella, hails from Valencia. There are several variations, but don’t miss the traditional version which consists of chicken, rabbit, and white beans. Turrón, popular at Christmas, also has its roots in Valencia.

Catalan cuisine is excellent, and you can’t go to Barcelona without enjoying the tapas. The food markets such as Mercat Boqueria and Sant Antoni Market are colourful and fresh!

Verdict: Thanks to paella, the point goes to Valencia.

Barcelona vs Valencia: Transportation

A HOLA Bcn pass will cover metro, buses, trams, and RENFE suburban trains and offers tickets for up to 5 days at a time. This will help you avoid paying extortionate taxi fees! Valencia is easier to navigate on foot than Barcelona, but also has an extensive transport network. Thanks to more international flights from the city’s airport, Barcelona takes the crown here.

Verdict: Barcelona

where to stay iin barcelona

Barcelona vs Valencia: Weather

Both cities have a Mediterranean climate and sunshine year-round. Since Barcelona is further north, the average temperature is colder than Valencia by 3 degrees Celsius. So, Valencia is the winner!

Verdict: Valencia

Barcelona vs Valencia: Verdict

Valencia edges it 4-3. If you have time, we recommend visiting both though!

Verdict: Valencia. Only just!

Hotels in Barcelona

Hotel La Casa del Sol – a reasonably priced hotel in the Gràcia district of Barcelona.

Zagreb or Ljubljana, which is the best city to visit? This guide will provide insights on the nightlife, sightseeing, cost of travel and other aspects of visiting these two European cities.

Are you planning a trip to the Balkans but don’t know if it would be better to visit Zagreb or Ljubljana? The capitals of Croatia and Ljubljana offer plenty for travellers, with beautiful architecture, intriguing museums, and lively nightlife. But which one is better – Zagreb or Ljubljana?

ljubljana or zageb

If you’ve already visited both cities, you may prefer one over the other. If not, don’t worry. In this article, we’ll analyse some of the most important aspects you look for in a city break to give a definitive answer to this question. Which is the best city: Ljubljana or Zagreb?

Overview of Zagreb

Zagreb is in the northwest of Croatia, the capital and biggest city in the country. It is the country’s main transport hub and has connections to the coast and islands.

That’s not all – you can also get to Mount Medvednica easily – where there’s great winter sports! Zagreb boasts an exciting arts and culture scene too. It’s home to the Croatian National Theatre, a number of galleries, and the quirky Museum of Broken Relationships.

Overview of Ljubljana

Ljubljana is the capital and the biggest city of Slovenia. It’s a picturesque city, centered around the banks of the Ljubljanica River, with the medieval castle visible from pretty much anywhere.

Slovenia’s cultural hub is home to a number of museums and art galleries. It’s also a university town with a large student population and surprisingly laid back for a capital city.

Zagreb vs Ljubljana: Nightlife

Zagreb’s best nightlife isn’t that easy to find. Unlikely locations and hard to find warehouses are closely guarded secrets among locals. However, make friends with a local and find a thriving party scene that rivals neighbouring capital Belgrade and is said to imitate Berlin. Clubs largely focus on electronic music.

Ljubljana has a great mix of mainstream, genre-specific, and underground clubs. Partying is reserved for the weekend in Ljubljana and a great place to go is Metelkova. Not just a club, it’s an independent art space and a music venue with gigs and DJ sets until the early hours of the morning. Thanks to more options and a wilder scene, Zagreb wins!

Verdict: Zagreb

zagreb or ljubljana

Zagreb vs Ljubljana: Sightseeing

Ljubljana’s attractions are centred around the Ljubljanica River and are located quite close together. The Dragon Bridge and Tromostovje (Triple Bridge) span the river, while Ljubljana Castle looms over the historic centre. Tivoli City Park is a lovely place for a wander when you went to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city.

Zagreb Cathedral is unquestionably the most famous landmark of the city, towering above the buildings that surround it. The top museum is the bizarre Museum of Broken Relationships, but it doesn’t offer quite as much as Ljubljana.

Verdict: Ljubljana

Zagreb vs Ljubljana: Old Town

The Upper Town is historic Zagreb at its finest. You can reach it either by funicular or a walk up some steep stairs – it’s up to you. The charming Upper Town has cobblestone streets lined with bars, and it’s home to the beautiful St Mark’s Church.

Ljubljana’s historic centre is where you’ll find lots of cafes, bars, and restaurants along the Ljubljanica River. Don’t miss Prešeren Square either, where you can see one of the medieval gates of Ljubljana. Ljubljana wins – just!

Verdict: Ljubljana

slovenia ljubljana

Zagreb vs Ljubljana: Cost of Travel

There’s a noticeable difference between capital cities in Western and Eastern Europe. Both Zagreb and Ljubljana are loads cheaper to travel in than London, Paris, and Berlin. Zagreb has an average price of $69 per day, whereas Ljubljana is $77. Both can be done for less if you’re on a budget, but Zagreb is the winner.

Verdict: Zagreb

zagreb croatia

Zagreb vs Ljubljana: Food and Restaurants

Croatian food is a diverse mix, blending Greek and Roman staples with spices and herbs. Slovenian food is a mix of Austrian, Hungarian, Croatian and Italian cuisine. Both cities have a wide range of restaurants where you can try local dishes and international food, so it’s a draw!

Verdict: Draw

Zagreb vs Ljubljana: Transportation

Ljubljana only offers a city bus system. There’s no subway, but that’s because it’s quite small. The best way of seeing Ljubljana is by bicycle or on foot. As Zagreb is much bigger, there’s a tram there and the service even runs at night. It’s the best way to get around the city. As the system in Zagreb is more extensive, it takes the point here.

Verdict: Zagreb

Zagreb vs Ljubljana: Weather

Ljubljana is one of Europe’s wettest capitals, and it’s known for being foggy and humid. Zagreb also gets a lot of rainfall, but the weather isn’t as unpredictable as it is in Ljubljana. Therefore, Zagreb takes the point here!

Verdict: Zagreb

Zagreb vs Ljubljana: Verdict

With a 4-2 victory and 1 draw, Zagreb is the winner!

Verdict: Zagreb

Rome or Milan, which is the best city to visit? This guide will provide insights on the nightlife, sightseeing, cost of travel and other aspects of visiting these two Italian cities.

Travelling to Italy but don’t know if you’d rather visit Rome or Milan? It’s a common question for travellers to one of Europe’s most beautiful and evocative countries.

rome or milan italy
Rome

Italy’s two largest cities are sometimes thought of as the head (Milan) and the heart (Rome). But how can you decide which is better: Rome or Milan?

One thing is for sure, ask any Roman or Milanese, and they’ll tell you that their city is the best. But that’s not entirely fair. In this article, we’ll look at most important aspects that make a city break.

Then, we’ll give an objective answer to the question where you should go on holiday: Rome or Milan?

Overview of Rome

Rome is the capital and biggest city in Italy. It was also the heart of one of the world’s most revered and feared empires, and there are lots of reminders of that here. Entering the ruins of the Forum or the Colosseum will take you back centuries! Rome is so big that it has an entire country inside it! The Vatican City is the head of the centre of the Catholic Church and also the home of the beautiful Sistine Chapel.

Overview of Milan

Milan is the Italy’s second largest city by population, located in the Lombardy region in the north. It’s one of the world’s most important fashion cities, home to Armani, Moschino, and Versace. It’s also Italy’s financial hub, home to the national stock exchange. What it lacks in sights, it makes up for in high-end restaurants and shops.

If you are travelling around Italy by train, check and book train tickets using Trainline.

Rome vs Milan: Nightlife

In Milan, you’ll be heading out much earlier than in Rome. Nights start here around 6 or 7pm, whereas in Rome it’s closer to 10pm. This is partly due to the weather.

Start the night with aperitivo, before heading to a live music performance. Clubbing usually starts around 11pm.

Rome has great areas for going out, but they’re all very far apart. It’s best to pick one area and stay in its bars and clubs. Otherwise, you’ll spend a fortune on taxis! Milan wins as the nights start earlier but end just as late!

Verdict: Milan

Rome vs Milan: Sightseeing

There is no competition when it comes to this one. Yes, Milan has the iconic Duomo in the centre and La Scala theatre. However, it seems that Rome has something around every corner. The 18th century Trevi Fountain is adorned with intricate sculptures. The Baroque Spanish Steps lead up to the Trinità dei Monti Church.

And we haven’t even got to the Vatican – which houses the world’s largest basilica and fascinating museums dedicated to art and religion. The real jewel in the crown though is the Colosseum – the iconic Roman amphitheatre.

There’s still loads we haven’t covered, but the real magic of Rome is that there are so many things to see from several different periods of history!

Verdict: Rome

rome italy

Rome vs Milan: Centro Storico

It’s hard to pinpoint Rome’s Centro Storico – it’s sprawling and as we’ve already mentioned, there are several periods of history in Rome. Milan’s is a bit easier to find – spreading out from the beautiful Gothic Duomo, which took 6 centuries to complete! In Milan’s Centro Storico, you’ll find fashion houses, coffee shops, and the ornate Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade.

Because it’s more orderly and organised, Milan takes the point this time!

Verdict: Milan

Rome vs Milan: Cost of Travel

There’s so much to do in Rome that even if you choose budget accommodation and keep it tight on the food, you’ll still spend money on attractions. After all, why wouldn’t you?! Average daily prices in both cities are over €100, with Milan at €108 and Rome at €130.

Verdict: Milan

milan italy

Rome vs Milan: Food and Restaurants

Typical Milanese food is not what you’d expect. Think risottos, stews, and polenta rather than the Italian staple of pizza. There are some fabulous high-end restaurants you can enjoy when staying here. Rome has some excellent restaurants, but you’ll have to pick through the tourist traps to find them.

Verdict: Milan

Rome vs Milan: Transportation

Milan’s public transportation is easy to use, and one ticket covers metros, trams, and buses for 90 minutes. It’s very efficient (by Italian standards). Rome also has an extensive transport network, and a number of trains. However, the metro can sometimes be a den for pickpockets and it’s not the cleanest!

Verdict: Milan

milan or rome

Rome vs Milan: Weather

There’s one word for Milan’s weather: unpredictable. It’s the 4th hottest large city in Europe. It’s also the 2nd wettest and is the 6th highest when it comes to temperatures below freezing. There is also fog or smog on 343 days each year! Rome, however, has a standard Mediterranean climate.

Verdict: Rome

Rome vs Milan: Verdict

Verdict: With a score of 5-2, Milan wins! That doesn’t tell the whole story though. Rome is an unmissable and chaotic city filled with historical treasures, while Milan is the powerhouse of Northern Italy.

Verdict: Milan

Hotels in Rome

Hotel Fontanella Borghese – a reasonably priced hotel close to the Via del Corso and the Pantheon, in a great area for shopping.

Casa Mia In Trastevere – an excellent choice in Travestere, one of the best places to stay in Rome.

Hotels in Milan

Hotel Milano Navigli – as the name says, a great accommodation option in the Navigli area with pretty price to quality ratio.sfasdf

Hotel Ritter – an affordable hotel at a prime location, just next to the Parco Sempione.

Where to stay in Yerevan, Armenia? Discover the best areas to stay in Yerevan in this post, the capital city of this unique country on the Caucasus

Considering traveling to the Caucasus? Check the best places to stay in Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia, one of the world’s oldest surviving countries and has rich history and culture.

where to stay in yerevan armenia

Yerevan is the perfect base to explore this incredible small nation, as it’s easy to combine time in the city with travelling further afield to cultural highlights and attractions.

If you’re travelling here, you’re probably wondering about the best areas to stay in town. That’s why we’ve written this post! We’ve taken a close look at the best neighborhoods in Yerevan, so that you can easily plan your visit here.

Travel in Yerevan: Overview

There’s nowhere better to base yourself than Yerevan if you want to discover the magical and historical Armenia. The centre is packed full of intriguing places to visit such as museums, galleries, and historic attractions. Republic Square is the beating heart of the city, while the Cascade Staircase and Museum is a pretty spot to relax. Art lovers will enjoy the museum within the staircase, while views of Mount Ararat from the top are sublime!

Armenia’s history is long and complex, and one of the worst events in the country’s history was the 1915 Genocide. Visiting the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial and Genocide Museum is a sobering and educational place to learn more about this atrocity.

To reach the country the best option is flying. The Yerevan Zvartnots International Airport is the biggest in the country, and it is growing in number of flights and passengers at a fast pace for the past years.

As well as cultural and historical attractions, there’s much more to enjoy. Try the local delicacies at one of the city’s many restaurants or experience the vibrant nightlife scene. Whatever you want from a city break, you’ll find it here in Yerevan!

Best Areas to stay in Yerevan

The best area to stay in Yerevan depends on what you want from your visit. Tourists will be most at home in the city centre as it’s where pretty much all of the attractions are. In fact, there’s really not that much to see away from there!

However, if you’re looking for an authentic and local experience, you can still explore the suburbs. The city is quite spread out, and districts like Marash and Nork are on a different hill to Kentron and Kond. There’s even a neighbourhood in Yerevan called Bangladesh, because it’s so far away from the centre!

If you are coming for a short stay in Yerevan, the Republic Square is the best reference for a location to explore the city. The area around this square is the most accessible and central of the Armenian capital.

Kentron

Kentron is where you’ll find the most exquisite examples of traditional Armenian churches, monasteries, and historical buildings. Not only that, it’s where you’ll find most of the city’s hotels, hostels, and vacation rentals. Stroll along the wide tree-lined boulevards in this circular district, while admiring the unique and intricate blend of Armenian and neo-classical architecture.

It’s the best place to be in Yerevan both during the day and at night. If you still have energy after exploring the museums and galleries, then why not head for a night out?

Most of Yerevan’s varied and enjoyable nightlife is in this area. Start off by sampling dolma (stuffed vine leaves) in some of the best restaurants in town. Then, head for a classy cocktail before rounding the night off at one of Yerevan’s great clubs. The centre is quite compact, so you should be able to stumble back to your hotel. To stay safe though, we’d recommend a taxi!

Kond

Kond is the oldest part of the city and has more than 400 years of history. It sits upon a hill overlooking the Kentron District, and it’s easy to get between the two neighbourhoods on foot. The most interesting thing about Kond is the architecture. Some of the walls of the Ottoman, Persian, and Muslim houses are actually thicker than the alleyways!

It’s a largely residential area, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to stop off and get a coffee or a glass of wine. Armenians are so friendly that some of the Kond residents will even invite you into their homes! If you want a local and authentic experience, perhaps look at a vacation rental in this area or see if any local families offer hosting!

The Alexander, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Yerevan – a splendid hotel in a very central area of the Armenian capital.

Cost of travelling in Yerevan

When it comes to travelling in Yerevan, budget travellers will be delighted. Although it can be quite expensive actually getting to Armenia, that’s not the case travelling in the country.

Considering capitals are usually the most expensive places to travel, you can enjoy Yerevan for an average price of less than $20 USD per day. Accommodation and meals can be picked up for less than $10 per day per person too. Another great thing is that if you travel away from the capital, it’s super cheap as Armenia is so small!

Most of Armenia has a cold semi-arid climate, which includes the capital. That means that winters are quite cold, and summers can be extremely hot. For that reason, visiting Yerevan is probably best during autumn and spring. The months of April, June, September and November are ideal for sight-seeing and tourist the country beyond the capital.

Armenia is not a very touristy country, and the tourism seasonality does not affect it heavily. Although the winter months have the lowest influx of tourists, the summer is definitely not packed with tourists. For that reason, prices in Yerevan do not fluctuate as much as they do in most European destinations.
