Where to Stay in Taichung? Let’s check the best areas to stay in Taichung, one of the biggest cities in the island with great attractions and prices

Are you traveling to Taiwan? Check the best places to stay in Taichung, one of the best cities in the country, with great food and more affordable prices.

Travel to Taichung: Overview

Taichung (台中) is the third biggest city in Taiwan, and a great place to visit if you are in the island. Its name means Central Taiwan, as the character 中 means “middle” or “central.

The city gathers the spirit of Taiwan in all of its nuances. Taichung has a lot of small businesses, ran by locals, which often includes some of the most delicious restaurants you will ever visit. The region is also home to many of the Taiwanese industrial parks, which fueled the impressive economic growth in the island in the past decades.

Taichung is the perfect stop if you are traveling around Taiwan, which usually involves a North to South route or vice versa. You can easily reach Taichung from both Taipei (to the North) or Kaohsiung and Tainan (to the South) using the Taiwan High Speed Rail.

You can buy tickets for attractions, get 4G internet, transfers and train tickets in Taiwan on Klook.com.

Taichung is also a great place to stop if you are planning to visit the Sun Moon Lake (日月潭), one of the biggest attractions in Taiwan.

Best Places to Stay in Taichung

Considering that this is the third biggest city in Taiwan, one can expect its rather spread out. Therefore, the best area to stay in in the city will depend on how long you will stay in Taichung.

Fengjia Night Market

The Fengjia Night Market (逢甲夜市) is one of the busiest night markets in Taiwan, and certainly deserves a visit. Located in the Xitun district, it is one best places to stay in the city, especially if you like (obviously) night markets.

Click here to check accommodation options close to the Fengjia Night Market on Booking.com

This area is probably the best to stay in Taichung if you are going to visit the city for more than one day. It is rather far from the city’s two train stations, and ideally you will need a taxi to get there. The area is also close to the Feng Chia University, an excellent choice for foreigners studying Chinese.

Railway Station

There is a big chance that if you visit this city, you will get there by train. It is important to understand that Taichung has two different train stations, one for the Taiwan High Speed Rail and one for regular trains.

The Taichung Main Railway Station (not the HSR one) is located in Central Taichung, at an easily accessible location. There are many hotels around this area, from budget to more high-end options. The only disadvantage of this area is that it lacks nightlife entertainment, specially if compared to the Fengjia Night Market area.

If you are using the High Speed Rail, the THSR station is located in the Wuri district. There are very few accommodation options in its area, and your best option is to take a taxi to the Fengjia Night Market, or to Central Taichung.

Budget Accommodation in Taichung – $

Ease Single Inn – an excellent choice offering dorm beds and affordable private rooms in Central Taichung.

Kiwi Express Hotel – Cheng Gung Branch – an affordable hotel in Central Taichung.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Taichung – $$

La Vida Hotel – located just a short walk from the Fengjia night market, this hotel offers a great value for the money in the Xitun district.

Fushin Hotel Taichung – an excellent hotel in Central Taichung, within waling distance to the Taichung Main Station.

Luxurious Hotels in Taichung – $$$

The Splendor Hotel Taichung –  luxurious hotel in Taichung featuring great entertainment options.

THE LIN Hotel – a great hotel in the Xitun district located a short drive away from the Fengjia Night Market.

Cost of Travel

Taichung is a pretty affordable city, especially if you compare prices with Taipei. While food and transport prices are just slightly cheaper in the city than in Taipei, accommodation in the city is certainly more affordable.

best places to stay in Taichung

The only disadvantage of the city when we compare it to Taipei is the cost of getting to the city. There are much less directly flights to this city than to Taipei, especially considering the Taoyuan International Airport (serving Taipei). In most cases, you will need an extra train ride to get to the city once you land in Taipei.

Food, just like everywhere in Taiwan, is available at virtually all times. It is usually delicious, healthy and quite cheap. You can get an amazing beef noodle soup in different parts of Taichung for something around TWD 150, which is roughly 5 US dollars. You can also get cheaper eats, especially if you don’t plan to eat in refined places.

Best Months to Visit Taiwan

Taichung has a very favorable climate year round, which is good news for most travelers. Winters are pretty mild, and the temperature is almost always good for outdoor activities.

Even if the city is pretty welcoming during most of the year, one should consider the Typhoon season in Taiwan. The typhoon season is usually from June to October. Typhoons do not have all the time during these months, and vary greatly in intensity. However, it is important to consider the weather before coming to Taiwan.

The other important event in Taiwan that should be avoided is the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) This one usually takes place in February, and transports and accommodations are normally very crowded during the Spring Festival. Ideally you should avoid this time when visiting the city and Taiwan as a whole.

Where to stay in Tashkent, Uzbekistan? Discover the best areas to stay in Tbilisi in this post, the capital city of this thriving Central Asian country

Tashkent is the capital city of Uzbekistan and it’s the largest city in the country. When it comes to tourism it can’t boast the architecture and charm of Samarkand and Bukhara, but that shouldn’t put you off visiting. Tashkent is a vibrant and bustling capital with plenty to see and do!

tashkent uzbekistan

If you’re travelling to Tashkent, we imagine you’ll be wondering about the best places to stay. You’re in luck! We’ve taken a look at the coolest neighbourhoods in Tashkent so that you can easily plan your visit.

Travel in Tashkent: Overview

If you want to discover Central Asia, Tashkent is a great place to start. Locals are welcoming and friendly, while there’s plenty of things to do in town. Its location means that the culture is a mixture of Russian, Asian, and Middle Eastern. Think traditional Islamic mosques rubbing shoulders with 20th century Soviet towers. Some of the most beautiful buildings include the grand Tashkent Opera House and the Khast Imom complex. You’ll find the older Quran in the world here!

The food is another reason to visit. Head to the Chorsu Bazaar to try local fresh produce, including bread which bakes upside down. Oh, and if you need to anything, be sure to haggle.

Overall, this is a great city to start your Central Asian adventure. So, let’s take a closer look at the best places to stay.

If you are traveling to Uzbekistan the best option is flying to the Tashkent International Airport. Uzbekistan Airlines has direct flights from Tashkent to many cities in Asia and Europe.

To book train tickets to and inside the country you can check the Uzbekistan Railways website. The country has some pretty modern trains, not in all routes though.

Best Areas to stay in Tashkent

As you’d expect from a capital city, Tashkent is pretty big. There are lots of neighbourhoods across this sprawling metropolis, so how can you know which is the best one to choose? We’ve researched a few different options to help you plan your stay in Tashkent. Each neighbourhood offers a unique flavour of the city.

Neighbourhoods come with their own advantages and disadvantages. There are a lot of hotels around the UZ Expo Centre, but it’s quite expensive! Another area worth looking at is around Mirabad Street, Tashkent’s predominantly Korean neighbourhood.

However, we’ve decided to take a closer look at Eski Shahar, the Old Town, and the area around Opera Square. There is also a new shopping mall that goes by the same name “Eski Shahar”.

Eski Shahar (Old Town)

Eski Shahar is probably the most characterful neighbourhood in Tashkent. Not only that, but it’s also home to two of the city’s most prominent attractions. These are the Chorsu Bazaar and Khast Imam.

You’ll notice that Tashkent is full of high-rise buildings, but not here. Single storey flank either side of the winding streets, creating a cosy and homely atmosphere. After all, this is largely a residential area. Vacation rental apartments have recently been legalised in Uzbekistan, so this is a good spot to look for something traditional. The main metro station in the Old Town is called Chorsu.

Opera Square

There are two main parts of Tashkent. One is the Old Town, which we’ve just explored, while the other is the New Town. That’s the area based around Opera Square and Amir Timur Square. We’ve chosen to focus specifically on Opera Square, as Amur Timur is a little less central. However, you can find some great places to eat and drink there!

If you want to head to the Tashkent’s 3 main museums, then Opera Square is a good place to stay. One of these museums is the State Museum of Uzbekistan! It’s also just a short distance from the Anhor Canal.

As well as a number of hotels in this area, you’ll also find some of the best places to eat in Tashkent. Try a plate of Plov (like a pilaf rice dish) and some tea at one of the many local tea houses. The closest metro station to Opera Square is Kosmonavtlar.

Last of all, if you are staying here, don’t miss visiting the spectacular Alisher Navoï Opera. It’s one of the most impressive buildings in Tashkent, and there are regular ballet and opera performances!

Budget Accommodation in Tashkent – $

ALPHA HOSTEL  – a modern hostel at a prime location, with easy access to the metro and the city center.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Tashkent – $$

ELITE HOTEL – an excellent hotel offering great value for the money in one of the best areas of Tashkent.

Sharq Hotel – a great hotel with easy access to the Kosmonavtlar Metro Station

Luxurious Hotels in Tashkent – $$$

Hyatt Regency Tashkent – a high end hotel in Tashkent with a beautiful interior.

Wyndham Tashkent – another luxurious option to stay in the capital of Uzbekistan.

Cost of travelling in Tashkent

How much does it cost to travel in Tashkent? That’s a tricky question to answer. Although the cost of living is generally quite cheap, accommodation isn’t. Budget hotels and hostels are a rarity here, so you might feel you’re paying quite a lot for what you get.

Eating out, travelling around the city, and visiting monuments is quite cheap though. For example, you can get fast food for as little as a dollar, and few restaurants will cost more than $10. Even high-end ones! Also, the metro only costs around $0.20 US for a single journey!

On the flip side, travel to and from Uzbekistan is quite expensive. However recently the country has relaxed its visa policy, making it considerably easier to get into the country.

Best Months to Visit Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is not a very touristy country (yet), so there is not a season in which the country is overcrowded. However, seasons are rather extreme.

Summer in Tashkent is pretty hot, with temperatures rather frequently going above 35 C (95 F). In winter, temperatures are often freezing. For that reason, the best time to visit Uzbekistan is definitely during Spring, in the months of April, May and early June. Another good option is early Autumn (September and early October).

Where to stay in San Marino? Let’s discover in this guide the best areas to stay in the country, a charming European microstate surrounded by Italy

Are you considering visiting this tiny European enclave? This post will guide you to the best places to stay in San Marino, featuring also tips on when to visit and travel budget to this unique enclave.

san marino castle

Tourism in San Marino: Overview

The Most Serene Republic of San Marino is one of the smallest countries in the world, and it is definitely worth visiting. This tiny microstate is one of the oldest in Europe, and managed to maintain its independence despite the wars over the centuries in the continent. It is famous for the Mount Titano, its beautiful historic city centre and its three towers.

In its more recent history, San Marino finds itself in a rather peculiar situation. The country used to be a tax haven, used mostly for Italian high net worth individuals. With further changes in banking and fiscal regulations, the country is no longer considered a tax haven. Currently, San Marino has tourism as one of its main sources of income.

The closest city to the enclave of San Marino is Rimini, on the Italian Adriatic coast. Getting to the country will generally involve going to Rimini first, as the small country does not have airports or railways. Rimini does have an airport, which caters mostly charter flights during the summer. Further north from the area is Bologna, which offers a better flight availability.

Considering this, getting to San Marino for most people will either involve driving or getting there by bus.

If you are flying to Italy, compare and book tickets using Jetradar. For those considering traveling by train, the best option is using Trainline.

Best Places to Stay in San Marino

Choosing the best place to stay in San Marino is somewhat easy, considering the country’s size. It will also play an important role whether you are driving with your own vehicle or vising the country by bus.

Another important thing to consider is that the country is rather hilly, in its old town and other areas considered. Walking in the country, specially in the old town can be quite a hike.

Old Town (Historic Center)

The old town is a UNESCO world heritage site and is the best place to stay in San Marino for a number of reasons. Firstly, it gathers most of the country’s attractions, including the towers, the public palace (Palazzo Pubblico), and many of the countries best restaurants.

The bus from Rimini makes its final stop at the old town, so it will be very convenient to get to your hotel even if you come by bus. For those driving, the old town can also be great option, as you can park your car and explore the picturesque streets of the old town.

Another option is to choose Borgo Maggiore and other towns for your stay in San Marino. I recommend this option mostly if you have your own car and if you come to the country for shopping. San Marino is also an important shopping destination and has lower taxes than Italy.

You can also get to the old town using the San Marino Cable Car (Funivia di San Marino) if you don’t want to drive upwards.

Hotels in San Marino Historic Center – €

Hotel Rosa – an excellent hotel in a prestigious location in the historic center.

Hotel Titano – another great hotel to stay in the most central area of San Marino.

Hotels in Other Areas in San Marino – €€

Hostaria da Lino – an excellent option with easy access to the San Marino cable car, which is just a quick ride to the historic centre.

Agriturismo Le Bosche – a great place to stay in the country and enjoy its beautiful countryside.

Cost of Travel in San Marino

Despite being one of the few exclusive European microstates, San Marino is definitely not as expensive as Liechtenstein or Monaco. The country has in fact a relatively similar cost of living as mid sized Italian cities like Bologna, Florence or Rimini. The currency in the country is the euro.

san marino

Accommodation and eating out in the country have moderate prices, comparable to most Western European cities. You can expect to have a good dinner for 2 people for anything between 17 to 35 euros. A good pizza will cost you from 7 to 10 euros in most cases.

Traveling to the country is also quite affordable. The bus from Rimini costs just 5 euros per person (one way).

Best Time to Visit

The tiny nation has a rather good climate year round, but it is subject to a high tourism seasonality. Even if the country does not have a coast, it is highly influenced by the city of Rimini. Being an iconic Italian summer destination, Rimini has a heavy inflow of tourists during the summer months. Many of these, opt for a short visit to the enclave during their stay on the Adriatic shores.

If you want to avoid crowds, Spring and early Autumn are definitely a great time to visit this European enclave. Hotels tend to offer pretty affordable prices and the city is pretty balanced. The months from November to February have the least amount of visitors to the country. If you don’t mind a rather chilly weather, December is a great time to visit the enclave and its quaint Christmas market.

The best places to stay in Sarajevo: discover one of the most beautiful capitals in the Balkans

In this article we will analyze the best places to stay in Sarajevo, bringing an insight on cost of travel to optimize your stay in this unique European country

Sarajevo is the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a little heart-shaped country located in southeast Europe. It has rich complex multicultural history and is known as a place where the East meets the West. No wonder they call Sarajevo the European Jerusalem, since there are many churches, mosques, and synagogues within a small area.

Despite its trouble past, Sarajevo was resilient in reinventing itself. Today, the best areas to stay in Sarajevo are safe, and full of attractions for those visiting the capital of Bosnia.

If you are doing a Balkan rail tour, you should definitely check Sarajevo. I also recommend taking the train from Sarajevo to Mostar, as it has one of the most beautiful landscapes in all Europe.

Therefore, make sure you visit Baščaršija, The Bey’s mosque, and cathedral as one of the famous landmarks. There is a popular belief that whoever drinks water from Baščaršija – the Old Town, returns one day.

Tourism in Sarajevo: Overview

The tourist increase started just a few years back. Until recently, the saddening 1990s war deprived Sarajevo of its deserved fame. Although Sarajevo became a favorite destination for many tourists all around the world, the lack of international flights is still a problem. However, many airline companies are introducing regular and charter flights which will probably resolve this problem in next few years. Nevertheless, you can still easily find many train and bus lines.

Despite its relatively central location in Europe, Sarajevo is still receiving a low number of international tourists. With the above mentioning improvements in terms of transport and safety, Sarajevo is bound to become a regional hub for tourism in the Balkan Region.

Best Places to Stay in Sarajevo

There are two areas which I consider the best places to stay in Sarajevo. One is the Old Town (Baščaršija) the most obvious if you are coming to Sarajevo as a tourist. The second best place to stay in Sarajevo is around the Avaz Twist Tower, which is good for business visitors and train travelers.

Let’s learn more about this areas, and choose where to stay in Sarajevo below:

Sarajevo Old Town (Baščaršija)

If you are coming for a short stay in Sarajevo, the Old Town is probably the best choice. The Baščaršija area is pretty compact and easy to explore on foot. The traditional Bosnian cafes and the diversity of Sarajevo is represent on its each and every corner.

Here is also one of the area where you will find most of the tourist attractions in the center of the city such as the Latin Bridge, the Pigeon Square, the Sacred Heart Cathedral and many more.

Avaz Twist Tower

The Avaz Twist Tower is the most iconic modern buiding in Sarajevo. Its building was completed in 2008, and represents a new era in Sarajevo, away from the trouble years of the recent past. The Avaz Twist Tower is in the Marijin Dvor a central district in Sarajevo, which great amenities for business visitors. The Avaz Twist Tower is also pretty close to the BBI Center, one of the biggest shopping malls in Sarajevo.

For those traveling by train, the area surrounding the Avaz Twist Tower can be a good option. The Avaz Tower has a restaurant overlooking the city, and its definitely worth a visit. You can also reach the Old Town by foot from this location.

The Sarajevo Train Station and the Bus Station are also quite close to the Avaz Twist tower, so this is a great location if you are travelling by bus or train.

Marijin Dvor

You don’t have to necessarily stay near the Avaz Twist Tower. As mentioned above, the tower is located in the Marijin Dvor district. Ideally, you should look for accommodation closer to the east of the district. This area is the closest to the Old Town, and you will be able to visit most attractions in the city by foot from this area.

To sum up, the best places to stay in Sarajevo are mostly located between the Marijin Dvor district to Baščaršija.

Budget Accommodation in Sarajevo

Hostel Franz Ferdinand – named after the famous Archduke of Austria, this hostel offers a quality affordable stay in Sarajevo.

Hostel Lucky – one of the best hostels in Sarajevo, close to the Baščaršija area.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Sarajevo

Hotel Logavina 8 – a great small hotel close to the Baščaršija street and all the sights in the old town.

Hotel Latinski Most – as the hotel says, this is one of the best places to stay in Sarajevo if you want to be near the Latin Bridge. Includes free parking.

Luxurious Hotels in Sarajevo

Hotel President Sarajevo – one of the biggest high class hotels in the city, close to the Baščaršija area and all of its picturesque restaurants.

Boutique Hotel Central – one of the best options if you looking for a luxurious stay in Bosnia, at a walking distance to the best restaurants in the city. This hotel is ideal for relaxing in its spa and pool.

Cost of Travel in Sarajevo

The cost of staying in Sarajevo is cheap compared to the majority of European cities. Probably, the cheapest, best accessible transportation options to use around Sarajevo are trams or buses. The average ticket price is around 1,60 KM one way.

It is important to notice that the Bosnian capital is a very hilly place, therefore it has a relatively limited public transport network. While trams are fast and reliable, there are very few lines and they ran mostly on flat areas. Buses, on the other hand, are everywhere, but a trip can take a lot of time due to narrow roads and hilly terrain.

sarajevo bosnia old town

Hence, if you are budget traveler you can expect to spend around 55 KM per day. This includes accommodation, food, and transportation. Also, accommodation prices range from 25 KM for budget travelers or more for those preferring more enjoyable stay.

Food in Bosnia is pretty cheap, and good if you enjoy meat dishes. I recommend trying Pleskavica in the Old Town, one of the most famous treats is the Ćevapi, and both are heavily meat based dishes.

Accommodation in the city is also affordable, and you will be able to find hostels, hotels and Bed and Breakfasts for every budget.

Best months to visit Sarajevo

The climate in Sarajevo has four very defined seasons. You can experience from heavy snow to soaring heat in this part of Bosnia, so it also depends on your type of travel. If you are into skiing, you can enjoy cheap ski slopes near Sarajevo, which hosted the Winter Olympic Games of 1984.

sarajevo bosnia

The winter in the Bosnian capital can be quite cold, with often snow showers. The months of January and February are the coldest. However, the spring is one of the best months to visit the city, as the temperature is mild and pleasant.

Nonetheless, August is perfect for visiting if you prefer bustling streets and active nightlife. Finally, if you are a fan of movies make sure to visit the city mid-August when Sarajevo Film Festival is taking place.

If you are traveling to the Balkans you might want to check some of our other guides to the region. Check where to stay in Zagreb and the best places to stay in Belgrade. You can also check the cost of living in Sarajevo, as well as where to stay in Skopje.

How to move to Montenegro? Discover in this post how you can obtain a residence permit in Montenegro to work, study or retire.

kotor perast montenegro

Are you looking to move to Montenegro? Learn how you can immigrate to the country and the reasons why you should consider doing it.

Montenegro Overview

Montenegro is a country in Southern Europe, known for its scenic beaches on the Adriatic coast. Montenegro is also one of the youngest countries in the world, becoming independent just in 2006, after a referendum that separated Serbia and Montenegro in two countries.

Currently Montenegro is a highly attractive country for investors, retirees and business people. The country has a high quality of life, beautiful nature and a friendly immigration policy towards both EU and non-EU members.

How to Move to Montenegro?

There are many ways to immigrate to Montenegro, as we will discuss below. One of the huge advantages of Montenegro is that, you can come to Montenegro first and then apply for a residence permit after (which is not the case for most EU countries). This way, you won’t have to wait in your country of current residence as your documents will go back and forth to the embassy.

However, you can only do this if your passport allows you visa free entry to Montenegro. This list includes most of the countries in Europe (including Russia and Turkey), most countries in South and North America, as well as Australia, New Zealand and some countries in East Asia.

Now, let’s discuss the options to get your residence permit in Montenegro.

Montenegro Residence Permit by Real Estate Acquisition

Montenegro is one of the few countries that allow foreigners to acquire residence by buying real estate. There are some restrictions to this, but broadly, you can get this type of residence permit by buying property, which can be a house or an apartment. You have to own at least 50% of the property in order to qualify for residence.

You can read more about it on Nur Properties website.

Montenegro Residence Permit by Opening a Company

One of the most popular options to obtain a residence permit in Montenegro is by opening a company. If you are the owner of a company incorporated in Montenegro, you can apply for a residence permit in Montenegro. However, you must own at least 51% percent of the shares of the company to qualify.

This can be a good option if you are a digital nomad and want to have Montenegro as your base. It also can be a good option if you want to work with real estate or hospitality, which are popular options for foreigners in Montenegro.

Montenegro Work and Residence Permit

If you find a job in Montenegro, it is relatively easy to get a work permit (in fact, the hardest part is finding the job). Montenegro is also a popular place for temporary workers from neighboring countries during the summer season.

Student Residence Permit

Every student enrolled in a higher education institution in Montenegro is also eligible for a residence permit.

Permanent Residence Permit in Montenegro

After living in Montenegro for five years, you will be able to apply for your permanent residence permit in the country.

One of the disadvantages of Montenegro is that your time out of the country is quite limited if you want to make it count towards permanent residency. While you are on a temporary permit, you have to notify the police each time you leave the country for more than 30 days.

You can read more about it in the Montenegro Government website (in Montenegrin).

Advantages of living in Montenegro

montenegro residence permit

Here are some advantages of living in Montenegro as an Expat:

Easy Residence Permit for EU and Non-EU Citizens

One of the no brainer advantages of living in Montenegro is how easy and flexible it is to get a residence permit, for both EU and non-EU citizens. Whether you want to work in Montenegro, become a remote worker while being in Montenegro, or just retire, there are plenty of options that might be suitable to your needs.

Perfect Place to Retire

Montenegro is a perfect place if you want to retire. It is safer than most Western European countries, and has a good overall level of public services, including health care.

Despite its small size, it has excellent connectivity. It has directly flights to most European key cities like Moscow, Frankfurt, London and Istanbul.

Low Cost of Living

Montenegro is located in the Balkans, one of the most affordable regions of Europe. Cost of living in the country is lower than in Western Europe when we talk about day-to-day costs like groceries and transport, but also for long term purchases like real estate.

Real estate in the country is especially inexpensive if you are not aiming at the coastal area. The capital Podgorica has some of the lowest prices per square meter among European capitals.

Low Corporate and Income Tax

Another huge advantage of Montenegro are its low taxes, both at  individual as well as corporate level. Corporate taxes are currently at 9% in Montenegro, one of the lowest levels in the European continent. Personal income tax ranges from 9% to 11%, plus a surcharge depending on the municipality you live. In almost all cases you will end up paying less than 13% total income taxes at a personal level.

You can read more about taxes in Montenegro here.

Stable Economy and Euro Currency

Even though Montenegro is a small country, it has a quite stable economy. Montenegro uses the euro as its currency, reducing risk of potential inflation or national currency devaluation.

Interest rates are low, and you can keep funds in different currencies in most Montenegrin banks.

Madrid is the capital of Spain and one of the most visited cities in the country. Toledo, on the other hand, is a much smaller city, with a very traditional atmosphere. Both cities have a lot in common, as Toledo used to be the former capital of the country.

It covers the best options for travelling between the country’s biggest international airport, and the capital’s biggest train station.

These include the Prado Art Museum, the city’s Botanical Gardens, and the Parque del Buen Retiro. In this article, we’ll explore the best ways to travel, including train, metro, bus, and taxi.

madrid atocha station

It’s also an important city transport hub, as it’s the primary station for Madrid’s commuter train service – the cercanías.

There are also daily international services to Marseille, France.

If you are traveling by train in Spain by train, book tickets on Trainline.

Best ways to get from Madrid Barajas Airport to Atocha Station

There are several ways that you can travel between Madrid Barajas and Atocha. These depend on a few factors – most importantly; budget and time of arrival. Not all of the options mentioned below are available 24 hours.

Madrid Barajas Airport to Atocha Station by bus

The airport express bus is one of the cheapest and most straightforward ways of travelling between Barajas and Atocha. The yellow Aeropuerto Express operates 24/7 and stops at Barajas T1, T2, and T4. Don’t worry if you’re arriving at T3, as the free shuttle bus will easily connect you to the other terminals.

EMT operate the buses and a one-way journey costs €5. You can buy tickets on the bus, but only with cash. During the day, the buses stop at O’Donnell, Plaza de Cibeles, and Atocha station. At night, they don’t stop at Atocha so either take a taxi from the airport or Plaza de Cibeles.

The metro is more expensive than taking the cercanía, as you have to pay a €3 surcharge for using the metro from the airport. However, if you arrive at T1, T2, or T3, you can hop straight on.

The metro doesn’t operate after 1:30am, so if you arrive later than that, take a taxi or a bus.

Madrid Barajas Airport to Atocha Station by train

Local trains, also known as cercanías, are short distance trains that operate around Madrid and the surrounding towns. Primarily, they’re used for commuters and are completely separate from Madrid’s metro system.

The C1 line, towards Principe Pio, offers a direct connection to Atocha Station. Look out for the light blue line which only leaves from T4. If you arrive at T1, T2, or T3, you’ll have to take a free shuttle bus as you won’t be able to reach T4 on foot.

A one-way journey (ida) costs €3.40 and takes about 35 minutes. Trains run between 6 am and 11.30pm.

Madrid Barajas Airport to Atocha Station by taxi

A taxi is a convenient and comfortable way to get to Atocha station from Barajas Airport. However, it’s far and away the most expensive option on this list. On the flip side, it’s a safe way to travel, especially if you’re arriving in the early hours of the morning. Official Madrid taxis are easily recognisable as they are white with a red diagonal stripe on the front door. If they’re free, the light on the roof is green.

Taxis between Barajas and Atocha have a flat fare of €35 no matter what time it is. The journey should take around 20 minutes, if there’s no traffic.

Bus or Train from Krakow to Budapest? Discover the best option with prices and information about this route

Krakow and Budapest are some of the most popular destinations in Europe. Check our guide and choose a bus or train from Krakow to Budapest and vice versa.

Budapest and Krakow are two cities in Central Europe that share a lot of common points: they both attract millions of tourists per year, they both have an excellent nightlife and they are somewhat close to each other in geographic terms. Odds are that, if you are in Southern Poland, you might want to extend your journey on a train from Krakow to Budapest.

The road and rail distance between Krakow and Budapest range from approximately 400 to 650 km depending on which route you take. The trip time is usually above 6 hours.

Train from Krakow to Budapest

One of the most evident options one can probably think of is to take the train from Krakow to Budapest, as train lines are interconnected and rather cheap in this area of the world.

Even if this is quite surprising, Krakow and Budapest have quite poor train connection. Depending on the season, there is a direct option (night train) that leaves Krakow in the beginning of the night and arrives in Budapest in the early morning, in a total exceeding 10 hours of travel.

As of 2023 there are also daily trains connecting Budapest Nyugati Station (Western Station) and Krakow Glowny (Main Station).

All the other options involving train are quite complicated, involving at least 2 connections via Katowice.

It still might be a good option though, in some cases. If you are travelling slowly in Central Europe, you can choose some of the cities along the way for a stop-over. Some of the options are Bratislava in Slovakia and Brno in Czechia.

Budapest Nyugati Station

Budapest Nyugati Station, a magnificent architectural gem built in the late 19th century, stands as a symbol of grandeur and connectivity in the heart of Hungary’s capital city. With its ornate façade and majestic interior, the station not only serves as a transportation hub within Budapest but also holds the distinction of being the starting point for trains bound for diverse European cities, including Krakow, Warsaw, and numerous other captivating destinations across the continent.

Whether embarking on a journey to explore the historic streets of Krakow or delving into the vibrant cultural tapestry of Warsaw, Nyugati Station stands ready to whisk travelers away on unforgettable adventures throughout Europe.

Bus from Krakow to Budapest

Another option you might consider is taking a bus. There are a few companies operating in this route, such as Flixbus. You might be able to find each leg for as low as 10 to 12 euros in both companies.

The best idea is to compare ticket prices between the train and the bus and then choose the best option according to your needs.

Alternatively, you can book tickets for this route directly on infobus.eu and Flixbus.

Budapest Nepiglet Bus Station

Located in Budapest, the bustling Nepiglet Bus Station serves as a vital hub for travelers seeking convenient and efficient transportation options. With its bustling atmosphere and well-organized facilities, the station offers a gateway to an array of captivating destinations.

Notably, Nepiglet Bus Station serves as the starting point for trains departing to various European cities, including the enchanting locales of Krakow, Warsaw, and numerous other vibrant urban centers across the continent. Whether embarking on a journey to explore the historic streets of Krakow or immerse oneself in the rich cultural heritage of Warsaw, Nepiglet Bus Station stands as a gateway to unforgettable experiences throughout Europe.

Flight from Krakow to Budapest

Depending on the season, you can find direct flights operated between Krakow and Budapest. They are generally operated by Ryanair, a low cost airline. Alternatively, you can also fly from Krakow to Vienna, and take a bus or train to Budapest (but this option is not so time effective considering the time spent on the airport plus the extra leg from Vienna do Krakow).

What to choose from Krakow to Budapest

Certainly a night train on a sleeper car is more comfortable than a bus, and depending on the purpose of your trip, you can save one night of hotel booking, taking the train. If you are on a budget and want to go the fastest way, the bus is invincible at the moment.

If you are traveling slowly, you can stop in another city on the way. The best options in this route would be Brno, in the Czech Republic and Bratislava in Slovakia. Finally, another great option might be renting a car, especially if you are traveling in a group of more than 3 persons.

Hotels in Krakow

Hotel Jan – a reasonably price hotel close the Krakow Market Square.

Hotel Imperial – an excellent hotel in the old town, very close to the Krakow Market Square.

Hotels in Budapest

Ibis Budapest City – a great reasonably priced option to stay in a very central location in Budapest.

Boscolo Budapest, Autograph Collection – the Boscolo Budapest is not only one of the most iconic in Hungary, but in all of Central Europe.

Traveling to Scotland? Check our guide to the best areas to stay in Edinburgh, one of the most fascinating cities in the British Isles.

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland in the UK. A relatively small city, it has a population of less than 500,000. However, the numbers of tourists top 4 million a year.

Tourism in Edinburgh: Overview

Edinburgh is known throughout the world as the “Festival Capital”. The city holds 12 major festivals a year, mostly focused on the Summer months. Most of the city’s tourists arrive then, making it a very busy time of year, but the atmosphere is electric. The Festivals cover topics from film, comedy, books, art, the international festival, the military tattoo and, the largest of the year, the Fringe.

However, aside from the major festivals, Edinburgh has a lot to offer visitors in terms of history and culture, if not weather. Split into two distinct districts, the city centre is an array of 15th century tenements rising above 18th century symmetry. They are also both UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Getting to Edinburgh might not be the easiest task though, as the city is located in the northern part of the United Kingdom. If you are coming from other parts of the UK, you have a good number of options with trains or buses to Edinburgh. If you are coming from other parts of Europe the easiest way is to catch a flight to the Edinburgh Airport (IATA: EDI).

If you are flying to Edinburgh you can find the cheapest flights on Jetradar

For those traveling by train or bus, you can also compare prices and options on GoEuro. Trains from London to Edinburgh take somewhere between 4 to 5 hours, and there are direct routes available. If you are renting a car, the best is to check the options on RentalCars.com.

Where to Stay in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a rather compact city, and once in the center most attractions are at a walking distance to one another. The Waverley Train Station is right next to the old town and close to the Edinburgh castle.

The Old Town of Edinburgh is probably the best area to stay in Edinburgh. It is where all the action happens, in an area full of restaurants, pubs, and various entertainment options. The famous Royal Mile is a good reference point to your stay in Scoland. It starts from the Edinburgh Castle all the way to the Holyrood Palace. Staying in this area is certainly an excellent idea to enjoy the city to the fullest.

The Waverley station surroundings are probably the best option to stay in the city, both in terms of logistics and comfort.

Budget Accommodation Options in Edinburgh, Scotland

The Baxter Hostel – A great option for a budget stay in Edinburgh, right next to the Waverley station.

CODE – POD Hostel Edinburgh – This hostel is just a short walk to the Old Town and all of its attractions.

Reasonably Priced Accommodations in Edinburgh, Scotland

Gifford House – Located in the Newington area, this property is ideal for guests looking for a peaceful Scottish holiday.

Alba House – A family run property located in the Newington area, in a house built in the XIX century.

Luxury Hotels in Edinburgh, Scotland

The Witchery by the Castle – A property that offers unique experiences right in the Royal Mile.

The Balmoral Hotel – An unique property in New Town featuring some rooms with a view to the Castle.

Cost of Travel in Edinburgh

For a small city, Edinburgh is quite expensive in terms of transport. Buses and trams cost £1.60 a trip, dearer if you want to go to the airport. A day ticket costs £4 and a week long pass is £18. Despite this, the city is well connected and the buses run regularly.

Flights, however, have gotten cheaper in recent years, making it easier for tourists to get to the city. The number of routes to the Edinburgh Airport is rising in recent years, with low cost airlines like Easyjet, Jet2 and Ryanair making it easy to reach the city from Europe. The same airport has also some intercontinental flights to North America and the Middle East.

Food is delicious in Scotland, and can be pretty affordable. That is especially the case if you enjoy eating traditional pub food. While accommodation can be quite pricy in Edinburgh, the low season can be an alternative to maximize your budget in Scotland.

Best Months to Visit Scoland

Scotland is not the warmest or sunniest place on Earth, however Summer and late Spring can still be quite warm and sunny. Summer in Edinburgh is crowded due to the number of festivals carrying on all at once. Really, whether that is a good thing, depends on the tourist.

If you want a sedate time, sightseeing all the historical buildings, try to go in between April and July or in September. If you want a lively time, filled with culture and a whole lot of weird, then go in August. If you want a Scottish winter full of snow, probably try somewhere further north than Edinburgh. Winter in the city is lovely, full of Christmas cheer, markets and fun.

Despite its high latitude, winter in Scotland is not so harsh as in other parts of Europe like Scandinavia or Central and Eastern Europe.

The best places to stay in Luxembourg: discover where to stay and when to visit this tiny European nation

Luxembourg is a beautiful small nation in the heart of Western Europe. The country is the only one in the world currently ruled by a Grand Duke. In this post we will list the best places to stay in Luxembourg for tourists and business visitors, with thorough information about each of these areas.

Tourism in Luxembourg: Overview

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a tiny, landlocked country in Western Europe bordering Belgium, Germany and France. Despite its small size, it receives a relatively high number of visitors due to its geographical location and economic relevance.

This tiny nation is a great destination for a weekend getaway if you live in Europe, or for a short trip if you are visiting the old continent. The charming streets of its capital Luxembourg city are on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and is definitely worth a visit.

You can easily access the country by car or train from its neighboring countries. The Findel Airport has a good number of routes to most European big cities, however, there are very few flights to other continents. Low cost companies have a timid, yet important number of routes to the Luxembourg Airport.

Best Places to Stay in Luxembourg

Luxembourg city is probably the ideal place for a short stay in Luxembourg. The city itself is small and most attractions are at a walking distance from one another. There are two beautiful and pleasant quarters, which I consider the best places to stay in Luxembourg city: Ville Haute (Uewerstad), Gare (Garer Quartier).

Ville Haute is the most central quarter in Luxembourg, with beautiful architecture and a welcoming atmosphere. The Ville Haute quarter has a number of important buildings, including the Grand Ducal Palace, the official residence of the Grand Duke, it is certainly one of the best areas to stay in the country.

The Gare quarter has its name from the Railway Station (Gare de Luxembourg). It has an ideal location if you arriving by train, with a great variety of hotels and restaurants in this area. You can check the Luxembourg Railways website for timetables and tickets.

It is the best area to stay in for train travelers, but also at a walking distance to the Ville Haute.

The countryside also offers beautiful landscapes and pleasant towns. Esch-sur-Alzette is probably a good choice to visit, especially if you are traveling by car.

Staying outside Luxembourg for Budget Travelers

For budget travelers coming for a day trip, there are some rather good options to stay outside the country. The cities of Trier (Germany) and Metz (France) and also some towns in Belgium offer a great accommodation options, often at lower prices.

Staying in Trier and Traveling Daily to Luxembourg

Opting to stay in Trier while visiting Luxembourg on a daily basis can be a wise choice due to the significant price difference in accommodation. Trier, a charming German city located near the Luxembourg border, often offers more affordable lodging options compared to the relatively higher prices in Luxembourg. By choosing Trier as your base, you can save considerably on accommodation expenses without compromising on convenience.

One of the advantages of staying in Trier is the ease of commuting to Luxembourg. By taking a train from Trier Hauptbahnhof (Main Station), you can reach Luxembourg Central Station in approximately one hour. The train connections between Trier and Luxembourg are frequent, allowing you to effortlessly travel back and forth between the two cities. This convenient transportation option not only saves you money but also provides the opportunity to explore Trier’s own historical landmarks, such as the Porta Nigra and the Roman Amphitheatre, while enjoying the cultural diversity and attractions of Luxembourg during the day.

Staying in Belgium and Traveling Daily to Luxembourg

Opting to stay in Belgian towns close to the border with Luxembourg while visiting the country daily can be a smart decision to keep accommodation costs in check. There are several Belgian towns near the Luxembourg border, such as Arlon, Athus, or Martelange, that often offer more affordable accommodation options compared to staying directly in Luxembourg. By choosing one of these towns as your base, you can enjoy lower accommodation prices without compromising on accessibility.

Staying in France (Thionville, Metz) and Travelling Daily to Luxembourg

Choosing to stay in Thionville or Metz, two French towns close to the border with Luxembourg, while visiting Luxembourg on a daily basis can be a great option to save on accommodation expenses. These towns often offer more affordable lodging options compared to staying directly in Luxembourg, allowing you to enjoy comfortable accommodation at a lower cost.

One of the advantages of staying in Thionville or Metz is the ease of commuting to Luxembourg. From either of these towns, you can take a train or bus to reach Luxembourg City and be at the Luxembourg Central Station in approximately one hour or less, depending on the specific location and mode of transportation chosen.

Budget Accommodation in Luxembourg

Youth Hostel Luxembourg City – probably the best budget accommodation in the capital, at a walking distance to Place d’Armes.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Luxembourg

Park Inn by Radisson Luxembourg City – just a short walk to the Luxembourg Railway Station, this property is ideal if you visiting the country by train.

Hotel Empire – Situated in the Gare Quarter, this hotel is at a walking distance to the most attractions in the city.

Luxurious Hotels in Luxembourg

Hotel Le Place d’Armes – a luxurious hotel located in the very center of Luxembourg, close to the Place d’Armes and the Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Hotel Le Royal – a sumptuous hotel, located in one of the most prestigious areas of Luxembourg.

Cost of Travel in Luxembourg

This small nation has one of the highest minimum salaries and standards of living in the world. A number of important multinational companies have headquarters in the country, attracting a high number of business visitors. All these aspects influence the cost of travel in the country, which is pretty high.

luxembourg landscape

One can expect to spend from 100 to 200 € per day, depending on your choice of activities. If you have a tight budget, you will be looking at 90 € to cover food, accommodation and also transport costs.

You can also do a day trip to the country from Belgium, France or Germany. This can be a great option if you are doing an Eurotrip and time is a constraint.

It is important to remember that public transport in free in Luxembourg for everybody, including for tourists. However if you are staying in a border town like Trier in Germany or Metz in France, you will have to pay for a ticket in and out of the Grand Duchy.

Best Months to Visit

Luxembourg’s climate is oceanic, with four seasons and high precipitation. The winter in the region is less cold than a number of places in Europe, and summer are generally warm.

In general, the country has a pleasant climate year round, but other factors are important to consider. The country receives the biggest influx of tourist during summer, when prices go up. January and February are the cheapest months to visit the country, but the cold can be unpleasant at times. From March to June the temperature is mild and precipitation is rather low, especially when compared to autumn.
