In this post will analyze the advantages and disadvantages of living in Montenegro. Learn how to get to Montenegro, open a bank account in Montenegro, and about the cost of living in this beautiful Balkan Nation

Retire in Montenegro: Overview

Montenegro is one of the youngest countries in the world, but it certainly has a rich history. Montenegro got independent from Serbia in 2006, as its outcome is related to the Yugoslavian dissolution. Unlike in countries like Croatia and Bosnia, the independence process in Montenegro was peaceful.

The country is one of the most beautiful in Europe. It has a magnificent sea side on the Adriatic, and is almost entirely covered by the Dinaric Alps.

Montenegro is one of the most affordable summer destinations in Europe. It is also one of the least populated countries in Europe, with a population under 700.000 inhabitants.

Getting to Montenegro

Getting to Montenegro is quite easy if you are in Europe. However, if you are traveling from other continents, there are no direct flights to this small Balkan nation.

The number of direct flights to Montenegro has increased over the past few years, and the trend looks quite positive. The main airports in the country are Podgorica Airport in the capital, and the Tivat Airport, serving the Adriatic Coast with mostly summer flights.

Montenegro is also accessible by road, train or seaside. Despite its mountainous relief, Montenegro has a very privileged location in Europe, therefore it is easily accessible by land or sea from a number of countries, including its Balkan neighbors and Greece (by land and sea) and Italy (by sea).

Opening a Bank Account in Montenegro

Always when moving temporarily or permanently to a new country, you may want to consider opening a bank account. Having a local bank account in Montenegro will certainly make things easier if you are staying in the country for longer periods. Apart from paying less transactions fees to local accounts and purchases, some services are available only for domestic accounts.

retire in montenegro

Having a bank account in Montenegro also saves you from paying high fees while withdrawing money in Montenegro. The good news is that Montenegro uses the Euro, even if its not part of the European Union or the Eurozone. This is definitely a good thing as there are less changes your funds will not suffer from eventual currency fluctuations.

There are banks operating in Montenegro, most of them are owned by bigger banking groups based in the European Union. Most Montenegrin banks have a deposit guarantee of up to 50.000 euros. Banking in the country is really easy and mostly a good idea, even if you are not planning to retire in Montenegro.

Here are some of the biggest banks in Montenegro by market share.

PRVA BANKA CG
SOCIETE GENERALE Owned by Societe Generale (France)
NLB BANKA
Hipotekarna Banka
ERSTE Bank Owned by ERSTE Group (Austria)
Crnogorska komercijalna banka Owned by OTP (Hungary)

Most banks in Montenegro will allow you to open a bank account as a non-resident or resident. To open a bank account in Montenegro as a non-resident you will need to provide your passport or id. Sometimes you will also need to provide a proof of residence of issued in your country of origin, however the requirements can change at the bank’s discretion.

Getting your Montenegro Residence Permit

Getting a residence permit in Montenegro is quite easy and inexpensive. Since Montenegro is not in the EU, it is easy to get a permit to live in Montenegro regardless of your citizenship.

While in most EU countries the options are pretty limited for Non-EU citizens, in Montenegro you can easily relocate to a privileged location in Europe. This is a great advantage if you are not an EU citizen and want to retire in Montenegro.

There are two ways I recommend as a path to get a residence permit in Montenegro. The first is buying real estate in the country. The second is opening  company in Montenegro. Both ways will create grounds for you to apply for a residence permit in the country.

open bank account montenegro

Opening a company in Montenegro is a quite simple and inexpensive process. It is the easiest choice to establish your residence in Montenegro. You do not necessarily operate the business you open actively, but there are fixed yearly costs with running it.

Montenegro taxes are also quite low, especially for European standards. Income tax is just 9% in the country.

Montenegro Citizenship by Investment

Recently Montenegro followed other countries like Cyprus and Malta, and now offers citizenship by investment. The starting investment to qualify for it is of 350,000 euros.

Another path to obtain citizenship in Montenegro is living a number of years in Montenegro. This option does not require an investment in the country.

Montenegro Cost of Living

The cost of living is also one of the most relevant factors for those willing to move or relocate overseas. Let’s analyze the cost of living in Montenegro including costs with groceries and internet, transport and real estate.

Overall, the cost of living in Montenegro is considerably lower than those of North America and Western Europe. Real estate prices in Montenegro are relatively high, especially on the coast. Transport and groceries are quite inexpensive, while internet is relatively expensive.

Real estate prices in Montenegro are variable, depending on the location you choose. The coast is mostly expensive, especially in the areas of Kotor, Tivat, and Budva. The capital Podgorica has variable prices depending on the area, and the countryside offers real bargains.

How to retire in Greece? Check this relocation guide featuring a cost of living analysis to one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

Are you considering moving or retiring to Southern Europe? This retire in Greece guide is ideal for any one considering to make Greece as your home. Check information on residence permits, cost of living and other important data on Greece retirement prospects.

retire in greece

This guide will cover in detail the advantages and disadvantages of retiring and living in Greece. It also brings a cost of living analysis in the country, and ways to optimize your budget while having a great quality of life.

Retire in Greec: Overview

During the past decades, Greece has changed considerably, especially when it comes to its economy. Despite being a full European Union member, the country has been struggled to keep its economy competitive.

However, the Greek economic crisis is also a source for opportunities in the country. Real estate prices are especially attractive in the country at the moment, and Greece is currently a great retirement destination, especially if you have a limited budget.

Apart from its attractive prices, Greece is also famous for its amazing landscapes and beautiful islands. Greece also enjoys pleasant weather most of the year, and has a much warmer climate than most Western European countries.

Greece is also in the Schengen Area, meaning one won’t have to worry with passport controls when coming from most Western European countries. Finally, the country has manage to secure its stay in the Eurozone, decreasing risk of Greek-based assets or currency devaluation.

Getting to Greece

Greece lies in the Southeastern border of the European Union. It has a privileged coastline on the Mediterranean basin and approximately 6000 islands, although only 227 have a permanent population. Greece shares land borders with Turkey to the East, and Bulgaria, Macedonia and Albania to the North.

The country has a very developed transport infrastructure, and getting to Greece is easy and inexpensive if you are in Europe. It is possible to reach Greece from other European countries by land (roads and railways), by sea (Greek ferries) and by air.

There are multiple low cost and flag carrier airlines operating to various Greek cities and Islands. Greece is one of the main European summer destinations, and there are many international airports with good infrastructure in the country. The busiest airports in Greece are Athens, Heraklion, Thessaloniki and Rhodes.

Greece enjoys a vast network or domestic and international ferries, connecting its main islands and cities. The busiest lines in terms of frequencies and options connect Greece to Italy, but it is also possible to travel from Turkey using ferries. You can also travel from Albania to Greece using a ferry (from Sarandë to Corfu).

Land transportation is the possibly the least convenient way to get to Greece. Even if there are railways connecting Greece to countries like Bulgaria, Romania and Macedonia, the routes are infrequent and the travel length is usually long. If you are traveling by car you can reach it from all the countries bordering Greece, however queues at the borders can be quite annoying.

Opening a Bank Account in Greece

Opening a bank account in Greece is not the easiest process, especially when compared to other countries in its vicinity. However it is possible even as a non-resident.
Greece has seen in its recent history some episodes of capital controls, which made the country much less attractive for banking. However, the situation is currently improved and capital controls are no longer a reality in Greece.

The requirements to open a bank account in Greece will depend on a number of factors. The main factors are, the bank, your status in Greece and sometimes, even the bank representative mood will determine your bank account opening.

As mentioned above, is not impossible to open a bank account in Greece both as a resident or a non-resident of the country. I would only recommend opening a bank account in Greece if you plan to live most of the year or buy real estate in the country.

To open a bank account you will usually require getting your Greek AFM (αριθμός φορολογικού μητρώου) which is the Greek tax id number. You can get it at any Efora, and you don’t need to be a resident to get one.

With your passport and your Greek tax id, you will have good chances to open a bank account in Greece. However, some banks may require other documents like a proof of residence (utility bill) or other documents.

Here are some of the biggest banks in Greece by market share.

Piraeus Bank

Eurobank

National Bank of Greece

Alpha Bank

Another advantage of having a bank account in Greece is the European deposit insurance scheme. In case your bank becomes insolvent, up to a certain amount, you will not lose your funds.

Getting your Residence Permit in Greece

Since Greece is part of the European Union and inside the Schengen area, the requirements to live in the country are quite different. The application and requirements will depend on your country of citizenship.

EU Citizens

If you a citizen of the European Union or the EEA you will have the right to reside in Greece. However, you need to register your stay in the country if you are planning to stay in Greece for more than 90 days. The registration process is simple, and does not require much documents.

The registration is pretty straightforward and the procedure has recently been simplified. Once you register your stay in Greece as an EU citizen, you do not have to renew it.

Non-EU Citizens

Becoming a resident of Greece as a Non-EU citizen is a relatively lengthy process that involves some bureaucracy. are not an EU citizen however, the process to get your residence permit involves some more paperwork. Greece sits somewhere in the middle when compared to other EU countries for those willing to retire and the paperwork involved.

retirement in greece

There are a few ways a Non-EU citizen can acquire permission to stay in Greece. Here, we will analyze a few of these options for those willing to retire in the country. This is especially aimed at those who have an income from abroad.

The first option is getting a residence permit for financially independent individuals. If you can proof a reliable steady income of € 2000 per month, you are probably eligible for this type of residence permit. You will also need a private health insurance for this type of permit.

The second option is acquiring real estate in Greece. The total of your real estate assets has to exceed € 250.000 in order to qualify for this type of permit.

There is also the option of becoming a self-employed person in Greece. For this, you will need to deposit € 60.000 in a Greek bank account. The applicant also must show evidence of a solid business plan, among other requirements.

More information is available in the Hellenic Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

Greece Cost of Living

The cost of living in the country is one of the most attractive factors for those considering retiremen in Greece. Despite being a full European Union member and using the Euro single currency, Greece enjoys a lower cost of living then most of its Western counterparts.

The economic crisis in Greece changed the country’s financial situation deeply. That had a positive effect for expats attracted to lower prices and moving in the country. Most of the costs in Greece have decreased in recent years.

Real estate prices are decreasing since 2008, and you may find great property bargains. This investment is especially interesting for citizens of the SEPA countries, as the level of bureaucracy is considerably lower. The price of real estate in Greece in considerably lower than other European summer destinations such as Portugal or Spain.

Food in Greece is also relatively affordable and rather abundant. Greek restaurants are delicious and are often inexpensive for those coming from Northern Europe or the US. Grocery prices are comparable to those in most Eurozone countries.

If you are visiting the country and considering to move or also retire in Greece, check our guide on where to stay in Athens. You can also check where to stay in Corfu and how to get from Athens to Thessaloniki.

Where to Stay in Palermo? Check the best areas to stay in Palermo, the capital and largest city in the island of Sicily, in Southern Italy

For those traveling to Sicily, this guide to the best places to stay in Palermo is definitely helpful to better explore the capital of Sicily.

best places to stay in Palermo

Palermo is the capital of the largest island in the Mediterranean and Italian region of Sicily. This seaside city was Italy’s capital of culture for 2018, and it’s bursting with art, culture, and history.

When you’ve seen enough of that, it’s just a quick trip to one of the nearby beaches. There, you can relax, top up your tan, or have a swim in the warm, blue waters of the Mediterranean. The city is a great base for exploring the rest of Sicily too.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the best places to stay in Palermo.

Travel in Palermo: Overview

Palermo is one of the major stop off points for tourists visiting Sicily. It’s located right on the north coast of the island, with fantastic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. These views are combined with beautiful green landscapes and a mixture of architectural styles in the centre.

Some of the most popular attractions include a historical palace filled with Byzantine mosaics, the neo-classical Teatro Massimo (a great place to take in an opera performance), and the stunning Cattedrale di Palermo which dates back to the 12th century.

If that’s not enough, add in the divine local food. It’s tasty, fresh, and influenced by all the previous conquerors of this island. There’s definitely enough for an exciting city break ahead!

Although Palermo is a beautiful place to visit, there’s one thing the city is famous for above all else. This, unfortunately, makes certain areas of the city very unsafe for tourists. Don’t just avoid staying in these areas, make sure that you don’t stray into them by accident – especially at night.

Best areas to stay in Palermo

Palermo is divided up into 25 districts, meaning that there’s a lot to choose from in the city. After all, you don’t want to miss out on the city’s ornate churches, traditional trattorias, and the vibrant nightlife. Some tourists choose to stay in Mondello, which is a bus ride out of the city.

This is a perfect spot if you want an authentic local experience. It’s actually a former fishing village with fabulous views of the sea and surrounding landscapes. However, we’ll focus on two neighbourhoods in the city itself – the Old Town or Centro Storico in Italian and Kalsa.

Old Town (Centro Storico)

If you’re visiting Palermo because you’re interested in the city’s history, then stay than the Old Town.

Due to its location between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, historically Palermo has been conquered more than most cities. You can easily see this, as every corner is a relic of a different civilisation, with remnants of Greek, Arabic, North African culture, amongst many more.

Many of the city’s most notable tourist attractions are here too – including the Cathedral, Quattro Canti, and the old Vucciria Market. You might not expect such wild nightlife in such a historical area, but you’d be wrong! There are lots of small alleyways filled with bars, and dancing goes on until the early hours in Vucciria Square.

The one downside of the Old Town is that pickpocketing is rather common here. So, remain vigilant and make sure you always know where your stuff is, as you would in any major European city.

Kalsa

Kalsa is another historic neighborhood in Palermo. This area is known as the old Arabic district of Palermo, and it is in fact quite next to the old town, towards the sea.

The area of Kalsa is equally beautiful with many of its alleys, delicious restaurants and various accommodation options. The neighborhood of Kalsa is in fact the oldest in city.

From Kalsa you will also have easy access to the Palermo Centrale Train Station, making of it a very convenient option if you are exploring Sicily further.

If you are traveling in Sicily by train, you can buy tickets on Trainline.

Budget Accommodation Options in Palermo – €

Hotel Concordia – a great relatively affordable option to stay in Palermo, in the Kalsa area.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Palermo – €€

B&B Campanile – A great choice in the the Kalsa district, in one of the best places to stay in Pristina.

Hotel Palazzo Brunaccini – An excellent hotel offering great value for the money in the center of Palermo.

Luxurious Hotels in Palermo – €€€

Grand Hotel Wagner – A refined superior hotel in a central location in one of the best areas to stay in Palermo.

Cost of travelling in Palermo

You’ll find that Sicily is generally cheaper than mainland Italy, which is a good start for making the most out of your trip! The average cost of travel in the city is about €75 per day, including accommodation, food and drink, local transportation, and entertainment.

sea palermo sicily

However, if you’re looking to spend less, then don’t worry. There are a few budget accommodation options in Palermo, and when it comes to eating, you can buy food at one of the many markets and cook yourself.

Onward travel in Sicily is also reasonably priced. Many budget carriers operate flights to Palermo’s Falcone Borsellino airport to and from mainland Europe.

Best Time to Travel to Sicily

Southern Italy has some of the highest average temperatures in the whole continent. You can easily use this in your favor when visiting Palermo and Sicily.

While July and August are the peak months for traveling in Europe, those are not the most recommended to visit Sicily. Temperatures are often very hot, and prices during these months are the highest across the year.

Spring and Autumn are definitely the best time of the year to travel to Sicily. You will enjoy pleasant temperature in months like May or October, and you can still easily go for a swim. Prices are also lower than in the Summer.

Winter may also be an option for Palermo. Temperatures in Palermo are considerably higher than in Northern Europe during this season. Sightseeing at pleasant temperatures is perfectly normal even in January.

Where to stay in San Marino? Let’s discover in this guide the best areas to stay in the country, a charming European microstate surrounded by Italy

Are you considering visiting this tiny European enclave? This post will guide you to the best places to stay in San Marino, featuring also tips on when to visit and travel budget to this unique enclave.

san marino castle

Tourism in San Marino: Overview

The Most Serene Republic of San Marino is one of the smallest countries in the world, and it is definitely worth visiting. This tiny microstate is one of the oldest in Europe, and managed to maintain its independence despite the wars over the centuries in the continent. It is famous for the Mount Titano, its beautiful historic city centre and its three towers.

In its more recent history, San Marino finds itself in a rather peculiar situation. The country used to be a tax haven, used mostly for Italian high net worth individuals. With further changes in banking and fiscal regulations, the country is no longer considered a tax haven. Currently, San Marino has tourism as one of its main sources of income.

The closest city to the enclave of San Marino is Rimini, on the Italian Adriatic coast. Getting to the country will generally involve going to Rimini first, as the small country does not have airports or railways. Rimini does have an airport, which caters mostly charter flights during the summer. Further north from the area is Bologna, which offers a better flight availability.

Considering this, getting to San Marino for most people will either involve driving or getting there by bus.

If you are flying to Italy, compare and book tickets using Jetradar. For those considering traveling by train, the best option is using Trainline.

Best Places to Stay in San Marino

Choosing the best place to stay in San Marino is somewhat easy, considering the country’s size. It will also play an important role whether you are driving with your own vehicle or vising the country by bus.

Another important thing to consider is that the country is rather hilly, in its old town and other areas considered. Walking in the country, specially in the old town can be quite a hike.

Old Town (Historic Center)

The old town is a UNESCO world heritage site and is the best place to stay in San Marino for a number of reasons. Firstly, it gathers most of the country’s attractions, including the towers, the public palace (Palazzo Pubblico), and many of the countries best restaurants.

The bus from Rimini makes its final stop at the old town, so it will be very convenient to get to your hotel even if you come by bus. For those driving, the old town can also be great option, as you can park your car and explore the picturesque streets of the old town.

Another option is to choose Borgo Maggiore and other towns for your stay in San Marino. I recommend this option mostly if you have your own car and if you come to the country for shopping. San Marino is also an important shopping destination and has lower taxes than Italy.

You can also get to the old town using the San Marino Cable Car (Funivia di San Marino) if you don’t want to drive upwards.

Hotels in San Marino Historic Center – €

Hotel Rosa – an excellent hotel in a prestigious location in the historic center.

Hotel Titano – another great hotel to stay in the most central area of San Marino.

Hotels in Other Areas in San Marino – €€

Hostaria da Lino – an excellent option with easy access to the San Marino cable car, which is just a quick ride to the historic centre.

Agriturismo Le Bosche – a great place to stay in the country and enjoy its beautiful countryside.

Cost of Travel in San Marino

Despite being one of the few exclusive European microstates, San Marino is definitely not as expensive as Liechtenstein or Monaco. The country has in fact a relatively similar cost of living as mid sized Italian cities like Bologna, Florence or Rimini. The currency in the country is the euro.

san marino

Accommodation and eating out in the country have moderate prices, comparable to most Western European cities. You can expect to have a good dinner for 2 people for anything between 17 to 35 euros. A good pizza will cost you from 7 to 10 euros in most cases.

Traveling to the country is also quite affordable. The bus from Rimini costs just 5 euros per person (one way).

Best Time to Visit

The tiny nation has a rather good climate year round, but it is subject to a high tourism seasonality. Even if the country does not have a coast, it is highly influenced by the city of Rimini. Being an iconic Italian summer destination, Rimini has a heavy inflow of tourists during the summer months. Many of these, opt for a short visit to the enclave during their stay on the Adriatic shores.

If you want to avoid crowds, Spring and early Autumn are definitely a great time to visit this European enclave. Hotels tend to offer pretty affordable prices and the city is pretty balanced. The months from November to February have the least amount of visitors to the country. If you don’t mind a rather chilly weather, December is a great time to visit the enclave and its quaint Christmas market.

Best Places to Stay in Andorra: Overview

Andorra is one of the smallest countries in Europe, but also among the ones who receive the highest influx of tourists proportionally. If you want to know where to stay in Andorra, this article will explain in the details the country and its best towns.

There are two main reasons attracting tourists to Andorra. The first one is for its nature, with great ski slopes available in winter, and a beautiful nature to be explored in summer. The second reason is shopping. Andorra is not in the European Union, and has lower taxes than most European countries.

The best places to stay in Andorra will depend on the purpose of your trip and the time of your visit. While Pas de la Casa and Ordino are some of the best towns to stay for skiing, Andorra la Vella and Les Escaldes are the best places for shopping.

The Meritxell Avenue (Avinguda Meritxell) is your point of reference for shopping. It is also where the Grans Magatzems Pyrénées (mentioned above) is. Andorra la Vella is the best place to stay in Andorra if you are coming by bus.

Hotels in Andorra la Vella

Les Escaldes

Les Escaldes is just next to the capital is also one of the main point of arrival for most tourists in Andorra. It has one of the widest choice of accommodations in Andorra and also the thermal spa, Caldea.

It is a great choice  and one of the best places to stay in Andorra for shopping and relaxation.

Ordino

Ordino is probably the best place to stay in Andorra if you want to enjoy the nature. The city has also a beautiful medieval architecture, and its main street “Carrer Major” is full of stone buildings.

Hotels in Ordino

Aparthotel Casa Vella – a cosy accommodation in Ordino, ideal if you are coming to ski in Andorra.

Hotel Santa Bàrbara De La Vall D’ordino – a great hotel to stay in Ordino and enjoy its nature and the beauty of its stone buildings.

Hotels in Sant Julià de Lòria

Pas de La Casa

Pas de la Casa is a town in the Andorran border with France. It has an elevation of 2080 meters and it is one of the highest towns in the country. French is more often heard than in other parts of the principality, which use Catalan and Spanish more often.

The town is a great option if you are coming from France and want to ski in the Grandvalira.

Hotels in Pas de La Casa

Shopping in Andorra la Vella

One of the main reasons behind the country’s high influx of visitors is shopping. The country has friendly tax rates and a very good infrastructure for shopping, including malls with most worldwide known high-end brands.

The main explanation that drives people to shop in Andorra is associated with its extremely low VAT(value added tax) of just 4.5%, which is four times lower than most of its EU members, including France and Spain, the neighboring countries of Andorra.

Mostly, alcohol and cigarettes are cheaper in Andorra than in France or Spain, but even if considering its low VAT rates, sometimes products might not be cheaper in Andorra, depending where you buy them, so I advise you to do your research before arriving.

The most famous spot, and a must to visit if you are going to Andorra for shopping is the Grans Magatzems Pyrénées which sits right in the middle of the capital, offering virtually everything you can be looking for from food to electronics, clothes to cosmetics, and household items.

Ski Resorts

Nature. Photo by Miquel Gonzalez

The ski season in Andorra starts in early December, and goes all the way to April. As tourism and winter sports are one of the main sources of revenue for the country, Andorrans are well prepared with a huge option of hotels and restaurants to welcome its visitors.

Andorra is one of the best places to ski, and probably the best one to ski in the Pyrenees mountain range. Skiing in the principality is recommended for all ages and all types of skiers, from beginner to pro. The infrastructure of the ski resorts is also first class, including ski and snowboard equipment rental, restaurants, bars,  There are two ski resorts in the country: Grandvalira and Vallnord.

The ski resort of Grandvalira is huge, and in fact, it is the biggest in the Pyrenees. It counts with more than 200 kms of slopes and a highly complex infrastructure to receive its visitors.

Some of the towns and villages from which you can access the slopes are: Pas de la Casa (on the French border), Encamp and Canillo. You can read more about the Grandvalira and its ski passes on the official website of Grandvalira.

Another great option for skiing in Andorra is the Vallnord Ski Resort. It is in fact divided in two resorts, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalis. Pal Arinsal has accommodation options available in La Masssa and Arinsal, while Ordino Arcalis is a bit harder to access, on the CG3 highway northbound from Ordino.

Vallnord has more than 100 km of slopes, as an infrastructure equivalent to the best ski resorts in countries like France, Switzerland or Italy. If you want to know more about the ski passes available on Vallnord, check their official website here.

Caldea

If you are coming to Andorra for ski or shopping, you might also check Caldea, a great option to spend some relaxing hours with friends or family. Caldea is a spa in Les Escaldes (Escaldes-Engordany), with a wide selection of thermal pools in a elegant sharp edged building. It also features saunas and restaurants.

The thermal pools are also open at night and have great lighting, providing a really unique experience.

Cost of Travel in Andorra

Despite its prestigious reputation, this tiny nation is a flexible destination in terms of budget. That applies to accommodation, food, transport and ski passes.

Andorra has of one the highest number of hotels per capita in Europe. Winter and summer are considered high season and prices are the highest during these months. Even if the country has hotels for almost all kinds of budgets, there are very few hostels in the country. If your budget is flexible, there are also a good number of luxury accommodation options available.

Ski passes are relatively affordable, somewhat around the average of European ski resorts. The prices in Andorra are definitely lower than those in Swiss alps, but more expensive than the cheapest ski resorts in Europe.

Restaurant prices in Andorra vary widely. The cheapest options are definitely pizzerias, but in general € 15-20 per meal per person is a rather decent price. If you are (really) lucky you might be able to find a daily menu for about € 10 euro.

Public transport in the country is provided by buses and taxis. There are no trams, metro lines or anything else. The cheapest bus ticket that covers the smallest transport zone costs € 1,80 for a single ride and € 3,40 for a return ticket. You can also buy a monthly pass to ride in all of country for € 154 euro per month. More info on Mobilitat.ad.

Best Months to Visit Andorra

If you want are coming to Andorra for skiing, I’d recommend early December, while the slopes are not so crowded. March and April can be a good option, but it will depend on the snow conditions.

For shopping and other kinds of visitors, spring and autumn are the best options. Andorra will be more peaceful during these months and accommodation prices are also significantly cheaper.

Venice is one of the top tourist destinations in Italy, a romantic city known for its canals. That’s not all though, it’s home to beautiful street food, renaissance architecture, and romantic gondola rides.

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, and you can spend hours walking around its pretty Old Town. Outdoor cafes line the Ljubljanica River, a perfect place to take a break and people watch the locals. It’s also just a short journey from Lake Bled, one of the most beautiful sights in Slovenia!

Although the cities are close, they’re separated by an international border. And although both countries are in the Schengen Zone and there are no border controls, travelling between the two cities is a little more complicated than it might be if you were just going to be in one country!

There are other journeys which involve a stop at Villach in Austria. But these journeys take even longer than the 5 hours making a stop in Trieste. The train is sometimes a more comfortable way to travel than bus, however between Venice and Ljubljana it is definitely slower.

Venice is a city located in the northeastern part of Italy. It is the capital city of Veneto region. It was also the capital of the Venetian Republic, and is certainly one of the most historic and emblematic cities of Europe.

If you are travelling by bus in Europe, book your tickets using Flixbus and GoEuro. If you are flying, compare and book tickets using Jetradar.

Tourism in Venice: Overview

Venice attracts around 20 million tourists per year. This is not strange taking in consideration its uniqueness and beauty. You can blend among the crowd, walk through secluded alleys, enjoy a gondola ride through the canals or drink a coffee at one of its charming bars or restaurants.

There are a number of places of interest worth visiting in Venice such as Piazza San Marco, Basilica di San Marco, Doge’s Palace, Grand Canal, and San Marco Campanile.
Venice is easily accessible by air by a number of airlines operating, but you can also reach it by ship, car, train or bus. No matter where you’re coming from, it is relatively easy to journey around Venice. Walking within the city center is a commonality, as everything is within a few minutes of each other. However, it is crucial for you to wear comfortable and practical shoes for a day long excursion through the city.

Famously, Venice offers memorable gondola rides which have enchanted the memories of tourists for centuries. Although this tranquil ride might set you back a good 80 Euros for 40 minutes, it is entirely worth the cost to create lasting memories in Venice.

Rather than taking a traditional bus you might find in Rome, Venice offers its own unique twist to the recipe: a water bus (vaporetto). With nineteen different lines scheduled to operate within the city, this is a truly efficient way to get around. As a bonus, it is only 7.50 Euros for a one hour vaporetto ride.

Best Places to Stay in Venice

When staying in Venice, it is always ideal to stay near the city center. However, this is not always a realistic expectation for you to set. The further you focus in on the island, however, the more tourist-friendly and scenic sights you will find.

Venice is one of the most busy tourist destinations in the world, finding accommodation in the city is not an easy task. For instance, most of the tourists prefer San Marco district because of the sights such as Piazza San Marco and the Basilica. However, this is also the priciest area and you will need a high budget to afford it. Let’s check some of the best places to stay in Venice below.

Campo Santa Margherita

For a little slice of an authentically Italian way of life, Campo Santa Margherita is a must-stay. In the morning, you can take your time drinking a cappuccino at a nearby cafe, then wander over to the market in the square. Open every morning, you can purchase anything from succulent fruit to fragrant flowers to freshly caught fish. Nearby benches converge to create a perfect spot for people watching, as musicians play and life happens all around you.

Piazza San Marco

Whenever you think about a classically Venetian locale, Piazza San Marco is likely the first place you will think of, even if its name escapes you. This massive square is known as “the drawing room of Europe” due to its major influence on both Renaissance and modern artists. The surroudings of the St. Mark’s Square are the most scenic area to stay in Venice.

The facade of Basilica Cattedrale Patriarcale di San Marco is the overwhelming attraction for most visitors. However, the entire piazza is flooded with hidden gems of the art world and all manner of sights to see.

When visiting the square at any time of the year, you simply must have a little bit of gelato during your visit. Particularly, the nearby La Boutique del Gelato. With easily the best gelato in Venice, and quite possibly the whole of Italy, it is easy for you to make a deliciously cultured memory.

Venezia Mestre Station

As with many cities in Italy, Venice is relatively small in comparison to most renowned European cities. As such, no matter where you find yourself staying, you will have easy access to any significant landmarks or sights within the city. That being said, if budget is a major factor in your stay, you will find it simple to stay in Venice near the Venezia Mestre Station (which is in the city of Mestre) and travel to the center of Venice quickly.

The train station, located on the mainland, is a budget-friendly accommodation which can provide plenty of freedom for you to travel elsewhere.

Budget Accommodation in Venice – €

B&B Casa Luzzi – a great bed and breakfast close to the Venezia Mestre station, with very attractive prices.

Il Veliero Romantico –  an affordable accommodation in the Santa Croce area of Venice.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Venice – €€

Hotel Alla Fava – a reasonably priced hotel close to the Rialto Brigde, in a privileged location in Venice.

Hotel Rio – a great accommodation option close to the St. Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco).

Luxurious Hotels in Venice – €€€

Bauer Palazzo – a beautiful refined hotel close to the Piazza San Marco.

Hotel Danieli, a Luxury Collection Hotel – a sumptuous hotel with a magnificent interior design, also close to the Piazza San Marco.

Other Towns Near Venice

Finally, there are many towns near Venice that you may want to consider to stay in Venice. Many of them are in fact less than one hour train ride from Venezia Santa Lucia (the main station of Venice’s touristy area). One option is Mogliano Veneto, or even the city of Treviso.

Cost of Travel in Venice

Venice is considered expensive according to Italian standards. The hotels on the main island are quite expensive so one should also consider different areas of the city. The same goes for food as well.

where to stay in venice

The average daily cost per person is around 100 € including accommodation, food, and transportation. However, if you are budget traveler you can possibly manage it with around 40 € per day. Your cost will also depend on the tourist sites you want to visit. For instance, a gondola ride can set you back 80 € per group, and for museums, you will need around 20-30 € for entrance fees.

Even if Venice is quite expensive, its cost of travel is comparable to those of Rome or Cinque Terre.

Best Months to Visit Venice

Venice is crowded for most of the time during almost every season. However, the summer is the busiest time of the year.
The best time to visit Venice is early spring and late autumn. The temperatures tend to be mild and inviting for strolling around the city. The city is less crowded than in Summer, which is probably an advantage for most types of visitors.

If you wish to enjoy a more quiet and relaxing Venice then the perfect time to visit it is during the winter. However, the weather is quite cold, wet and windy at this time. There is also a time during the colder period when water levels rise causing eventual floods. The best advantage of winter in Venice is that overall prices are considerably lower than the rest of the year. This does not apply to the Venetian Carnival, which usually takes places during late winter.

Naples, originally known as Napoli, is a city where you’ll find a wide range of activities. Historical sites, beaches, amazing food, night clubs, museums, everything is available.

Naples is a city divided into 21 different zones and is located on thesouthwest coast of Italy. Unlike Northern Italian cities, Naples is a bit more chaotic and exuberant. People in here tend to be more cheerful and Napoli is definitely brighter and more colorful than other Italian cities.

The capital of the Campania region is one of the biggest and most diverse cities in Italy. If you’re looking for the best Margherita pizza, Naples has it. If you’re looking for beautiful views, Naples has it too. Historical sites? Plenty of them. If you want an ancient volcano, surprisingly, Naples has it. The best neighborhoods to stay in Naples will allow you to enjoy every bit of this amazing place.

If you are travelling by bus in Europe, book your tickets using Flixbus. If you are flying, compare and book tickets using Jetradar. For those using the train, buy train tickets on Trainline.

Tourism in Napoli: Overview

Naples is a great starting point if you want to explore more of Italy. From Naples, you can take direct trains to Rome, Pescara, and Bari, which are also beautiful destinations. You can get to those places in just 2 hours(with the fastest trains), so you can enjoy the day and return by night.

Naples is a very walkable city and the places of interest are relatively near to each other. Public transport, however, is the best option to get to them. Among the places you should visit, there are Cappella Sansevero, Capodimonte Museum, Castel Nuovo, Santa Chiara, Palazzo Reale, the Duomo, and some other churches and palaces.

Still, historic sites are not the only options in Naples, and you can also spend a day at beautiful beaches. Since Naples its a coastal city, you’ll find lots of them to choose from. And if you want to check its surroundings, you can visit the Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii: Campania’s most visited sites.

Best Places to Stay in Napoli

Naples is located in the Campagnia, a southern region in Italy. It is a very big city, one of the most populated ones in the country. This is a city with lots of economic activities and a great city for students. So, it is important for you to know where to stay so you can easily visit all the interesting sites without having to spend too much time moving to the center of the city.

Centro Storico

Centro Storico stands for historical center in Italian, and this is the mosty privileged area to stay in Naples. Maybe you spend a bit more in accommodation, but a lot less in transportation. Plus, it is a very beautiful area featuring a combination of Medieval and Renaissance styles.

Centro Storico has very good restaurants, boutiques, swimming pools, spas. It is a great place to stay if you’re looking for comfort, since it has lots of amenities.

Posillipo and Chiaia

This is one of the most desired spots from Naples. Why? Simple answer: beaches. Posillipo and Chiaia are districts on the Mediterranean coast, and many hotels and houses enjoy a sea view; there are lots of options from where to choose.

In this area you’ll find very fancy restaurants with excellent food, delicious ice cream and pizzas, and for shopping lovers: amazing retails; all the best stores are located in Chiaia. Also, it is a great place to get a real feel for the city, since local people usually spend their free time here with their family.

Lungomare, Napoli. Photo by N i c o l a.

Depending on the area and the hotel, you can spend around $70 on a reasonably priced one (three to four stars). In food, you spend about €25-30 a day, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Of course, excluding any very high-end  restaurant. As for transportation, a bus single ride costs €1.30 inside the city, and it can even take you to and from the airport. A budget of € 100 per day per person is pretty reasonable for Naples.

Best Months to Visit Napoli

Since Naples offers a great deal of beaches, then the best season to visit it is summer. However, it might get a bit too hot if you go in August. So, the best months are June and July (the first two weeks, afterwards the weather can be too hot). Anyways, if you want to spend the whole summer in the beach, then the hot weather will match your vacations.

In September, the weather is already too cold to go to the beach, but it can be a great time if you are not looking to spend your vacations in the beach. It is a great time for sightseeing, checking out the Vesuvius, and other Italian cities near to Naples. It just depends on your definition of the perfect vacation!

Milan Central Railway Station

Milan Centrale or Milan Central Railway Station, one of the most spectacular railway stations in Europe, is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Milan. Its striking architecture, originally built in 1864, is only matched by its central location, putting you within easy reach of many of Milan’s famous landmarks. But this station is more than just a transportation hub. It’s also a destination for high-end designer shopping, making it a must-visit for fashion enthusiasts.

In this article, we will explore the history of Milan Centrale, as well as provide helpful information for travelers, including how to get to the station from Milan’s airports, whether there is wifi available, and whether luggage storage is available. We’ll also answer the question of whether Milan Centrale is open 24/7, providing all the information you need to make your travels through Milan as smooth and stress-free as possible.

History

Milan Central Station has a rich history dating back to 1864 when it was first built. The original station was located on the northern edge of the city center and featured a French Renaissance style design with an iron and glass canopy. However, it was not fully completed until a few years after its inauguration, and by then, its architecture was already considered outdated.

In 1912, architect Stacchini drew inspiration from classical Roman architecture, the Vienna Secession, and the Union Station in Washington D.C. to create a new design for the station. Later, Art Deco elements were added to the design in 1925, resulting in a unique blend of styles. The station was officially opened on July 1, 1931, by transport minister Costanzo Ciano.

During the station’s construction, the fascist regime of Mussolini requested that symbols of strength and power be incorporated into the building’s decoration. As a result, the roofs were adorned with sculptures of muscular animals from mythology, and the corners of the building featured fasces, bundles of rods tied around an axe, which symbolized unity and authority in Roman times.

Today, Milan Central Station is the second busiest station in Italy, with approximately 350,000 passengers using it daily. The station underwent a 100-million-euro renovation from 2005 to 2012, which aimed to restore its heritage architecture and modernize its facilities. Despite the renovation, some experts and enthusiasts feel that the new additions and billboards obstruct the original architecture’s view.

Venice Main Railway Station: Understand the railway traffic in Venice considering both the Venezia Mestre and Venezia Santa Lucia Station

Venice is a popular tourist destination in Italy, and it has two main railway stations: Venice Santa Lucia and Venice Mestre. Venice Santa Lucia is the main station in Venice, located in the city center, and is the one most commonly used by tourists. It serves as a terminus for regional and intercity trains, connecting Venice with other major cities in Italy and Europe. The station is situated on the Grand Canal and offers easy access to the city’s main attractions, such as St. Mark’s Square, the Rialto Bridge, and the Doge’s Palace.

On the other hand, Venice Mestre is a railway station located on the mainland and is about 10 km from the city center. It is an important transportation hub, connecting Venice with other parts of Italy and Europe. The station is primarily used by commuters and travelers who are passing through Venice and is a stopping point for many high-speed trains. Venice Mestre also serves as a starting point for regional trains and buses that take visitors to Venice.

Both stations have different railway traffic. Venice Santa Lucia is mainly used by regional and intercity trains, and most of the high-speed trains do not stop there. Conversely, Venice Mestre is a stop for many high-speed trains that do not pass through Venice Santa Lucia. The station is a gateway for travelers to Venice, and it has connections to many other destinations in Italy and Europe. Thus, it is essential to know which station to arrive at depending on your travel needs and the final destination.

Venice Santa Lucia Station (Venezia Santa Lucia )

The Venice Santa Lucia Station is an important transportation hub in the city, serving as the main railway station for Venice. It is situated on the Grand Canal, near the city center, making it a convenient arrival point for tourists visiting Venice. From here, visitors can easily access the city’s famous landmarks, such as St. Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, and the Rialto Bridge.

If you are planning a trip to Venice, you will likely arrive at the Venezia Mestre Station, which is located on the mainland, and then need to transfer to the Venezia Santa Lucia Station. The absolute easiest way to get from the Mestre Station to the Santa Lucia Station by taking the train, which runs frequently and takes only a few minutes to reach the Santa Lucia Station.

Venice Mestre Station (Venezia Mestre)

The most convenient way is to take the airport shuttle bus, which runs frequently and takes around 25 minutes to reach the airport. Is There WiFi in Venezia Train Station?

Unfortunately, there is currently no public Wi-Fi available at either the Venezia Mestre or Venezia Santa Lucia train stations in Venice, Italy. Despite the importance of these transportation hubs for both tourists and locals, the stations do not offer any free or paid Wi-Fi services to their visitors. This can be inconvenient for travelers who need to check their emails, book accommodation, or simply stay connected while waiting for their trains.

However, there are some alternatives to access Wi-Fi in the area. Some cafes and restaurants around the train stations may offer free Wi-Fi to their customers. In addition, Trenitalia, the national train company of Italy, provides Wi-Fi access in the reserved area known as the FRECCIAClub for first-class passengers at Venezia Mestre station. This is a perk that is only available to those who have purchased first-class tickets on Trenitalia trains.

Italo also offers a small space for its passengers with WiFi at Venezia Mestre

It is worth noting that high-speed trains in Italy, including the Frecciarossa and Frecciargento, do provide Wi-Fi access on board. Passengers can connect to the internet during their journey and stay connected throughout their trip, which is a great feature for those who need to stay connected during their travels.

Are There Luggage Storage in Venice Train Station?

There are luggage storage options in both Venezia Mestre and Venezia Santa Lucia. There are more options in and around Venezia Mestre, and they are run by private companies, not by Trenitalia.

How to Buy Train Tickets in and to Venice?

Buying train tickets in and to Venice can be a relatively easy process as there are several options available. The most common way to purchase train tickets in Venice is to buy them directly at the train station ticket counter. However, it is important to note that purchasing train tickets at the station can be more expensive, especially for long-distance trains, if you don’t buy them in advance.
