Where to Stay in Taichung? Let’s check the best areas to stay in Taichung, one of the biggest cities in the island with great attractions and prices

Are you traveling to Taiwan? Check the best places to stay in Taichung, one of the best cities in the country, with great food and more affordable prices.

Travel to Taichung: Overview

Taichung (台中) is the third biggest city in Taiwan, and a great place to visit if you are in the island. Its name means Central Taiwan, as the character 中 means “middle” or “central.

The city gathers the spirit of Taiwan in all of its nuances. Taichung has a lot of small businesses, ran by locals, which often includes some of the most delicious restaurants you will ever visit. The region is also home to many of the Taiwanese industrial parks, which fueled the impressive economic growth in the island in the past decades.

Taichung is the perfect stop if you are traveling around Taiwan, which usually involves a North to South route or vice versa. You can easily reach Taichung from both Taipei (to the North) or Kaohsiung and Tainan (to the South) using the Taiwan High Speed Rail.

You can buy tickets for attractions, get 4G internet, transfers and train tickets in Taiwan on Klook.com.

Taichung is also a great place to stop if you are planning to visit the Sun Moon Lake (日月潭), one of the biggest attractions in Taiwan.

Best Places to Stay in Taichung

Considering that this is the third biggest city in Taiwan, one can expect its rather spread out. Therefore, the best area to stay in in the city will depend on how long you will stay in Taichung.

Fengjia Night Market

The Fengjia Night Market (逢甲夜市) is one of the busiest night markets in Taiwan, and certainly deserves a visit. Located in the Xitun district, it is one best places to stay in the city, especially if you like (obviously) night markets.

Click here to check accommodation options close to the Fengjia Night Market on Booking.com

This area is probably the best to stay in Taichung if you are going to visit the city for more than one day. It is rather far from the city’s two train stations, and ideally you will need a taxi to get there. The area is also close to the Feng Chia University, an excellent choice for foreigners studying Chinese.

Railway Station

There is a big chance that if you visit this city, you will get there by train. It is important to understand that Taichung has two different train stations, one for the Taiwan High Speed Rail and one for regular trains.

The Taichung Main Railway Station (not the HSR one) is located in Central Taichung, at an easily accessible location. There are many hotels around this area, from budget to more high-end options. The only disadvantage of this area is that it lacks nightlife entertainment, specially if compared to the Fengjia Night Market area.

If you are using the High Speed Rail, the THSR station is located in the Wuri district. There are very few accommodation options in its area, and your best option is to take a taxi to the Fengjia Night Market, or to Central Taichung.

Budget Accommodation in Taichung – $

Ease Single Inn – an excellent choice offering dorm beds and affordable private rooms in Central Taichung.

Kiwi Express Hotel – Cheng Gung Branch – an affordable hotel in Central Taichung.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Taichung – $$

La Vida Hotel – located just a short walk from the Fengjia night market, this hotel offers a great value for the money in the Xitun district.

Fushin Hotel Taichung – an excellent hotel in Central Taichung, within waling distance to the Taichung Main Station.

Luxurious Hotels in Taichung – $$$

The Splendor Hotel Taichung –  luxurious hotel in Taichung featuring great entertainment options.

THE LIN Hotel – a great hotel in the Xitun district located a short drive away from the Fengjia Night Market.

Cost of Travel

Taichung is a pretty affordable city, especially if you compare prices with Taipei. While food and transport prices are just slightly cheaper in the city than in Taipei, accommodation in the city is certainly more affordable.

best places to stay in Taichung

The only disadvantage of the city when we compare it to Taipei is the cost of getting to the city. There are much less directly flights to this city than to Taipei, especially considering the Taoyuan International Airport (serving Taipei). In most cases, you will need an extra train ride to get to the city once you land in Taipei.

Food, just like everywhere in Taiwan, is available at virtually all times. It is usually delicious, healthy and quite cheap. You can get an amazing beef noodle soup in different parts of Taichung for something around TWD 150, which is roughly 5 US dollars. You can also get cheaper eats, especially if you don’t plan to eat in refined places.

Best Months to Visit Taiwan

Taichung has a very favorable climate year round, which is good news for most travelers. Winters are pretty mild, and the temperature is almost always good for outdoor activities.

Even if the city is pretty welcoming during most of the year, one should consider the Typhoon season in Taiwan. The typhoon season is usually from June to October. Typhoons do not have all the time during these months, and vary greatly in intensity. However, it is important to consider the weather before coming to Taiwan.

The other important event in Taiwan that should be avoided is the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) This one usually takes place in February, and transports and accommodations are normally very crowded during the Spring Festival. Ideally you should avoid this time when visiting the city and Taiwan as a whole.

Where to stay in Kyoto? Discover the best areas to stay in one of the most exciting cities in Japan, famous for its cultural heritage and unparalleled beauty

Kyoto is one of the most popular cities in Japan and it is easy to understand why. In this guide to this city full of culture, we will analyze the best areas to stay in Kyoto, as well as the cost of travel and when to visit this magnificent Japanese city.

where to stay in Kyoto

Tourism in Kyoto: Overview

If you are visiting Japan, that are good chances that you will include Kyoto in your itinerary. The city was once the heart of imperial Japan and it remains as a one of the main symbols of the Japanese history and culture.

International tourists planning to visit Kyoto arriving by air can select between two airports. The first airport is Kansai International Airport in Osaka and the second is Chubu Centrair International Airport in Nagoya. Both Kansai and Chubu-Centrair accommodate to both international and domestic flights, including those from low-cost carriers. From both airports, tourists can take a Shinkansen or a bus to the Kyoto Station.

If you are flying to Japan you can compare and book flights on Jetradar.

At least 20% of Japan’s National Treasures and 14% of its Important Cultural Properties are in Kyoto, including several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Various festivals such as the Gion Matsuri, Gozan Okuribi and Aoi Matsuri are also among the main attractions of the city, both for domestic and foreign visitors.

If you want to book activities, get a Japanese SIM Card, or a Japanese Railway Pass, you can get it from Klook.com. To rent a car, you can compare prices on RentalCars.com.

Where to Stay in Kyoto

When choosing a place to stay in Kyoto, you have a choice from one of its 11 wards. Kyoto’s 11 wards are reachable through its train and bus network. Kyoto Municipal Transportation Bureau handles its subway network. Tourists can also take the bus lines to travel around the city or rent a bicycle.

If this is your first time to visit the city, here are the areas you should consider for accommodations:

Higashiyama-ku

Higashiyama-ku is the place you should consider if you want to be close to attractions and the action. A good part of this ward remains untouched and well-preserved in traditional Japanese architecture style. As a result, tourists hoping to see buildings from old Japan would definitely get to see some in this area.

The Higashiyama ward is also the home to the entertainment district Gion. The district is where you can see geishas, with many of them performing in Gion’s various performance halls.

Aside from Gion, Higashiyama is also the location of some of the city’s shrines like the Yasaka Shrine, Tofuku-ji, Kodai-ji, Sanjusangen-do and the path to Kiyomizu Temple.

Nakagyō-ku

The Nakagyo-ku is another very central ward of Kyoto, and has a wide variety of eateries and activities. This ward together with the Higashiyama Ward offers the highest concentration of accommodation options in Kyoto. It is also the location of the Nishiki market, a great place to spend some hours in the city.

Budget Accommodation in Kyoto – $

Gion Guesthouse Yururi – an excellent Guesthouse close to the Yasaka Shrine.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Kyoto – $$

Hotel Sunline Kyoto Gion Shijo – a reasonably priced hotel in a very central location, in the Higashiyama Ward.

Hotel Kintetsu Kyoto Station – an excellent option if you are traveling by train to the city.

The Hotel Kiyomizu Gion – a great hotel in the Gion area.

Luxurious Hotels in Kyoto – $$$

Hotel Alza Kyoto – a luxurious hotel in Higashiyama-ku, in one of the best places to stay in the city.

The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto – one of the most luxurious hotels in the region, centrally located and with easy access to the subway (Kyoto Shiyakushomae Station).

Cost of Travel in Kyoto

As one of the most visited Japanese cities, it can be very expensive to visit the city if you end up visiting it during high season. On average, tourists would need to have ¥9,000 on hand per day to enjoy their stay in Kyoto.

Expenses may increase depending on the type of accommodation and activities you selected. Fortunately, travelers can buy discount tickets for trains and buses. The tickets also offer discounts from partner shopping and dining establishments.

kyoto japan

Best Months to Visit

Similar to other Japanese cities, Kyoto is perfect to visit during Spring (from March to May) and Autumn Season (from September to November). Around this time, the weather is perfect for sightseeing.

During the spring season, cherry blossoms are at full bloom. Around autumn, the scenery will be in hues of reds and oranges. Unfortunately, given the beauty Kyoto will be around in these times, it is also noted as the city’s hot season and accommodations can be quite pricy around this time.

If you wish to travel around the city without having to worry about the crowds, travel during winter or summer. Around this time, you have Kyoto all to yourself(more in winter than summer) and get perfect shots of its attractions.

However, these seasons can be unbearable either due to the sweltering heat or the freezing temperatures. Consider carefully if you can handle the temperature.

Considerations and Resources

When visiting Japan, this city is a must visit in your itinerary. Although surrounding cities around it now reflect a modern Japan, the old capital remains true to its roots and retain its historical charm. If you want to experience and understand what makes Japanese culture so intriguing, visiting Kyoto is a must.

If you are traveling to Japan check some of our other guides. Check the best places to stay in Tokyo as well as our guide to Nagoya.

The best places to stay in Taipei will be listed in this post, which also feature the best months to visit the beautiful island of Taiwan

If you want be in the best places to stay in Taipei during your visit to Taiwan, this guide will be definitely helpful. We listed not only the best areas to stay in Taipei, but also the average cost of travel in Taiwan, and the best time of the year to visit this East Asian nation.

best places to stay in Taipei

Taipei Chiang Kai Shek Memorial

Tourism in Taipei: Overview

Taipei is the capital of Taiwan (Republic of China) and one of the most interesting cities in East Asia. Most of Taipei’s population is of Chinese origin, but the Japanese rule can be felt in many of the city districts. Currently, Taiwan’s capital attracts tourists from all over the world, and its main attractions are its culture, food and technology.

Taiwan has a relaxed visa policy towards most citizens of Western nations. While a visa is often required to visit mainland China, most Western passports allow a  three months stay without a visa. Taipei is also a great place to visit if you are learning Chinese and or is interested in East Asian culture.

You can buy tickets for attractions, get 4G internet, transfers and train tickets in Taiwan on Klook.com.

Since Taiwan is an island, most visitors reach Taipei using the Taoyuan Airport. It has direct flights to Europe, North America and various Asian countries.

Taipei is also famous for the Taipei 101, one of the tallest buildings in the world.

Best Places to Stay in Taipei

where to stay in Taipei
Taipei City Center

Taipei is a big city, with a current population of almost 3 milion inhabitants. The best places to stay in the city are the following districts: Ximending, Zhongzheng and Xinyi. If you want to know where to stay in Taipei, below we have a little insight about these districts for your visit to the Taiwanese capital:

Ximending

Ximending is a very popular area among tourists and probably the best area to stay in Taipei. It is the ideal spot for shopping, with a number with option of shops open during the day and evening. It is also a great place to eat traditional Taiwanese food or get a foot massage. There are also some bars in the region, and it is usually pretty busy at during the evening.

Click here to find accommodation in Ximending on Booking.com

Zhonzheng and Taipei Railway Station

The district of Zhongzheng is a great option to stay in Taiwan for a number of reasons. Firstly it is pretty central and has excellent transport connections. Secondly, it is where the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall is located, which is one of the most famous postcards of Taipei.

Finally, this is where the Taipei Railway Station is located. From the Railway Station you will have easy access to other cities in Taiwan and also to the Taoyuan airport (by bus).

Xinyi

The Xinyi District is an upper class area of Taipei, with plenty of refined restaurants and luxurious hotels. The famous Taipei 101 is also located in its district. It is also a good area if you want to enjoy the city’s upper class nightlife.

Budget Accommodation in Taipei – $

Taiwan Youth Hostel & Capsule Hotel –  an excellent hostel and capsule hotel with one of the best interior designs in Taiwan.

Uinn Travel Hostel – an affordable hostel at walking distance to the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall in the Zhongzheng District.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Taipei – $$

Hotel Relax 5 – a great affordable option quite close to the Taipei railway station. Its surroundings have great eateries and transport connections in one of the best places to stay in Taipei.

Cho Hotel – an excellent choice with a unique decoration close to the Ximending Night Market area.

Luxurious Hotels in Taipei – $$$

Mandarin Oriental Taipei – an excellent hotel in the Songshan District from one of the most renowned luxury hotel chains in the world.

Evergreen Laurel Hotel Taipei – a great refined accommodation hotel close to the Songjang Nanjing MRT Station in the Zhongshan District.

Cost of Travel in Taipei

The cost of travel in Taipei is variable. While food and transport and relatively cheap, the city is pretty crowded, and accommodation can be quite expensive.

The capital is by far the most expensive city in Taiwan, and if you are visiting more cities in the country, expect prices to drop elsewhere. While the difference in food prices are not so significant, accommodation is much cheaper in cities like Tainan or Kaohsiung.

Food in Taiwan is widely available at virtually all times. It is also delicious, and pretty healthy. You have eateries for all choices in the capital, from small street food stalls to more refined restaurants.

Unlike mainland China, dairy products are used more often in the Taiwanese cuisine, and it has a bigger influence from Western cuisine. Traditional food in Taiwan is also delicious, and I strongly recommend tasting beef noodle soup.

Accommodation in the Taiwanese capital is plentiful, however finding a good hotel requires some research. Since the city receives a great number of tourists, but also of business visitors, accommodation can be expensive. However, you can still find affordable options, mostly in hostels. Taipei also has a number of business and higher-end hotels.

Public transport in the city is among the best in the world. The Taipei MRT has a wide network, affordable prices and usually comfortable transport conditions.

Best Months to Visit Taiwan

The best times to visit Taiwan is probably late autumn and early spring, however I consider winter to be also a good option. The climate in Taiwan is warm almost year round, with a few weeks of cooler weather during winter.

The island of Taiwan is in the Western Pacific, a region known for its typhoons. The typhoon season starts in spring and lasts until the autumn, however, the most active typhoon months are from July to September. Typhoons usually last for a few days when they hit the island.

Early spring and late autumn have quite pleasant weather, and much lower chances of typhoons. Both seasons usually have similar levels of rainfall, which can happen pretty often in Taiwan.

You should also avoid traveling to Taipei during the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year). It usually happens in February and most Taiwanese people travel and meet their families during this period. Hotels can be quite difficult to find, and many of them sell out during the Spring Festival. While shops and restaurants are opened, banks, factories and a number of business are closed.

The Turkish coast is famous for its unique views and beautiful cities. In this post we will analyze the best places to stay in Izmir, Turkey, a great option on the Aegean Sea.

Traveling to Turkey? Check out this guide on the best places to stay in Izmir, one of the best options if you want to enjoy the summer and the sea in Turkey.

where to stay in Izmir
Izmir Turkey, Photo by Thomas Depenbusch

Turkey’s third largest city, and only large city by the sea, would probably look much like Istanbul if not a fire in 1922 that destroyed much of the city. Izmir is still a tourist destination today, though, and a great jumping off point to see many sights on Turkey’s beautiful west coast, and even some Greek islands.

Tourism in Izmir: Overview

Izmir’s Levantine and Jewish heritage is the biggest reason to spend a day or two here before heading out to see the surrounding area. There is still a sizeable Jewish community here and tours of the synagogues and Jewish area called Alsancak are available.

The city is considered the most cosmopolitan city in Turkey and the least conservative of the big three. Other sights within the city include ancient Agora, the Archeology Museum, and a free Ethnography Museum where you can view and learn about local arts, crafts, and customs.

Surrounding Izmir are the ruins of Bergama to the north and Ephesus to the southeast. Each makes a great day trip and in the nearby small towns by each, you’ll find some of the best Turkish cuisine anywhere, especially pide, a type of Turkish pizza.

Budget Accommodation Options in Izmir, Turkey

My Happy Home Hostel – A great option to stay in Izmir. This hostel is located in the Konak district and is a pet-friendly accommodation.

Hotel Apart Alsancak – A good value for the money property at the heart of historic Izmir. Some rooms have a kitchen, which can be quite useful for some guests during their stay in Izmir.

Reasonably Priced Accommodations in Izmir, Turkey

Orty Airport Hotel – A great option located right next to the Izmir International Airport. Ideal for connecting flights.

Hotel Elara – This hotel is located in a new building in the Karsiyaka district of Izmir. The hotel also offers car rental services.

Luxury Hotels in Izmir, Turkey

Key Hotel – This incredibly luxurious hotel is located right next to the Aegean Sea in the Konak (historic) district.

Swissôtel Grand Efes Izmir – This magnificent property is also located in the historic district. It has a large swimming pool and many luxurious features.

Cost of travel in Izmir

Travel and lodging in and around Izmir is noticeably cheaper than in Istanbul. Lovely boutique hotels at reasonable prices abound in the city and breakfast is always included.

Getting around on public transportation is easy. Most people get around Izmir using the metro, or a dolmus, or minibus. One ride on either will cost about 3TL. There is also the option of shared taxis, which are cars that stop and pick people up anywhere, so you run the risk of not knowing how long it will take to get where you are going, but most cover a limited neighborhood and are also a cheap option.

The train to and from Izmir is cheap, practical, on time and can take you just about anywhere in Turkey, including Selcuk for about 10 TL, which is near the Ephesus ruins, as can the incredible network of buses. Bus travel is cheaper, and sometimes faster, than train travel. A bus from Izmir to Istanbul will cost between 55 TL to 72 TL.

Adnan Mendes Airport is busy, with numerous and inexpensive domestic flights to many cities in Turkey, as well as international departures. Budget domestic airlines abound in Turkey, and include Atlasjet, Onur Air, Sun Express, and Pegasus which also has many international flights.

Ferries are available from Cesme to go to the nearby Greek Island of Chios from May to September.

Best Months to Visit Turkey

The best months to visit this part of Turkey are March to May when it is dry and not so hot, and the summer months. Even though it can get to 40 degrees Celsius, the air is dry and the sunshine is a big draw.

Summer is beautiful, and nearby beaches like Cesme and Alacati are beautiful and can bring relief from the heat with sea breezes and white sand beaches.

Tbilisi actually has a rather pleasant weather during most of the year. It has four very defined seasons and a low precipitation level year round. The months of July and August may be at times excessively hot, although temperatures are usually good for outdoor activities. The capital of Tbilisi has some of the best climates for tourism year round in Europe.

The winter is usually mild in Georgia’s capital, especially if you compare it to the most countries in Europe. Even if snow is not uncommon, the average temperatures in the city in Winter are considerably higher than in most European countries. Where to stay in Da Nang, Vietnam? Check out the best areas to stay in this Vietnamese city

Da Nang is probably one of the most underrated cities in Vietnam. Check our guide on the best places to stay in the city and discover what it has to offer.

where to stay in da nang

Is It Worth it to Visit Da Nang? Tourism Overview

There is no doubt that tourism is booming in Vietnam. The country offers excellent entertainment, delicious eateries, a relatively good weather year round and very affordable prices. However, most people tend to visit Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and Hanoi. Da Nang, on the other hand has a much more relaxed atmosphere, and a population just slightly above one million inhabitants.

The city is an excellent place to stop while traveling along Vietnam, or if you want to visit just one city in the country. Da Nang is famous for its beaches, but it is also a great place to experience Vietnamese culture, and enjoy its unique cuisine. This Vietnamese city is also slightly cheaper than the capital Hanoi and the country’s largest city, Ho Chi Minh City.

Da Nang is in central Vietnam, and offer great transport links to other areas of the country, and even other Asian countries. You can fly to the city from the bigger hubs in the country, and also from many other Asian cities in China, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and others.

The city also benefits from its central location in Vietnam, and has many direct rail and bus links to many other cities in Vietnam. Danang is also a good stop if you are going to Hoi An, a great small city in Vietnam, close to Da Nang and famous for its picturesque old town. Finally, the Ba Na Hills is also definitely worth checking and is pretty close to Da Nang.

Da Nang is not an exception as is a pretty affordable city in terms of accommodation, food and transport.

Accommodation in Da Nang is affordable year round but it is subject to seasonality. The cheapest months are the wettest months, so if you don’t mind the rain you can get real bargains in the months of October or November.

Where to stay in Tashkent, Uzbekistan? Discover the best areas to stay in Tbilisi in this post, the capital city of this thriving Central Asian country

Tashkent is the capital city of Uzbekistan and it’s the largest city in the country. When it comes to tourism it can’t boast the architecture and charm of Samarkand and Bukhara, but that shouldn’t put you off visiting. Tashkent is a vibrant and bustling capital with plenty to see and do!

tashkent uzbekistan

If you’re travelling to Tashkent, we imagine you’ll be wondering about the best places to stay. You’re in luck! We’ve taken a look at the coolest neighbourhoods in Tashkent so that you can easily plan your visit.

Travel in Tashkent: Overview

If you want to discover Central Asia, Tashkent is a great place to start. Locals are welcoming and friendly, while there’s plenty of things to do in town. Its location means that the culture is a mixture of Russian, Asian, and Middle Eastern. Think traditional Islamic mosques rubbing shoulders with 20th century Soviet towers. Some of the most beautiful buildings include the grand Tashkent Opera House and the Khast Imom complex. You’ll find the older Quran in the world here!

The food is another reason to visit. Head to the Chorsu Bazaar to try local fresh produce, including bread which bakes upside down. Oh, and if you need to anything, be sure to haggle.

Overall, this is a great city to start your Central Asian adventure. So, let’s take a closer look at the best places to stay.

If you are traveling to Uzbekistan the best option is flying to the Tashkent International Airport. Uzbekistan Airlines has direct flights from Tashkent to many cities in Asia and Europe.

To book train tickets to and inside the country you can check the Uzbekistan Railways website. The country has some pretty modern trains, not in all routes though.

Best Areas to stay in Tashkent

As you’d expect from a capital city, Tashkent is pretty big. There are lots of neighbourhoods across this sprawling metropolis, so how can you know which is the best one to choose? We’ve researched a few different options to help you plan your stay in Tashkent. Each neighbourhood offers a unique flavour of the city.

Neighbourhoods come with their own advantages and disadvantages. There are a lot of hotels around the UZ Expo Centre, but it’s quite expensive! Another area worth looking at is around Mirabad Street, Tashkent’s predominantly Korean neighbourhood.

However, we’ve decided to take a closer look at Eski Shahar, the Old Town, and the area around Opera Square. There is also a new shopping mall that goes by the same name “Eski Shahar”.

Eski Shahar (Old Town)

Eski Shahar is probably the most characterful neighbourhood in Tashkent. Not only that, but it’s also home to two of the city’s most prominent attractions. These are the Chorsu Bazaar and Khast Imam.

You’ll notice that Tashkent is full of high-rise buildings, but not here. Single storey flank either side of the winding streets, creating a cosy and homely atmosphere. After all, this is largely a residential area. Vacation rental apartments have recently been legalised in Uzbekistan, so this is a good spot to look for something traditional. The main metro station in the Old Town is called Chorsu.

Opera Square

There are two main parts of Tashkent. One is the Old Town, which we’ve just explored, while the other is the New Town. That’s the area based around Opera Square and Amir Timur Square. We’ve chosen to focus specifically on Opera Square, as Amur Timur is a little less central. However, you can find some great places to eat and drink there!

If you want to head to the Tashkent’s 3 main museums, then Opera Square is a good place to stay. One of these museums is the State Museum of Uzbekistan! It’s also just a short distance from the Anhor Canal.

As well as a number of hotels in this area, you’ll also find some of the best places to eat in Tashkent. Try a plate of Plov (like a pilaf rice dish) and some tea at one of the many local tea houses. The closest metro station to Opera Square is Kosmonavtlar.

Last of all, if you are staying here, don’t miss visiting the spectacular Alisher Navoï Opera. It’s one of the most impressive buildings in Tashkent, and there are regular ballet and opera performances!

Budget Accommodation in Tashkent – $

ALPHA HOSTEL  – a modern hostel at a prime location, with easy access to the metro and the city center.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Tashkent – $$

ELITE HOTEL – an excellent hotel offering great value for the money in one of the best areas of Tashkent.

Sharq Hotel – a great hotel with easy access to the Kosmonavtlar Metro Station

Luxurious Hotels in Tashkent – $$$

Hyatt Regency Tashkent – a high end hotel in Tashkent with a beautiful interior.

Wyndham Tashkent – another luxurious option to stay in the capital of Uzbekistan.

Cost of travelling in Tashkent

How much does it cost to travel in Tashkent? That’s a tricky question to answer. Although the cost of living is generally quite cheap, accommodation isn’t. Budget hotels and hostels are a rarity here, so you might feel you’re paying quite a lot for what you get.

Eating out, travelling around the city, and visiting monuments is quite cheap though. For example, you can get fast food for as little as a dollar, and few restaurants will cost more than $10. Even high-end ones! Also, the metro only costs around $0.20 US for a single journey!

On the flip side, travel to and from Uzbekistan is quite expensive. However recently the country has relaxed its visa policy, making it considerably easier to get into the country.

Best Months to Visit Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is not a very touristy country (yet), so there is not a season in which the country is overcrowded. However, seasons are rather extreme.

Summer in Tashkent is pretty hot, with temperatures rather frequently going above 35 C (95 F). In winter, temperatures are often freezing. For that reason, the best time to visit Uzbekistan is definitely during Spring, in the months of April, May and early June. Another good option is early Autumn (September and early October).

Bangkok to Phnom Penh: The Route

If you are traveling in Southeast Asia, odds are that you will start or finish your journey in Bangkok. The capital of Thailand is not only one of the biggest cities in the region, but also one of the most visited in the world.

While Bangkok has a complex and developed tourism infrastructure, Phnom Penh is a completely different reality. The capital of Cambodia is much smaller, less developed and more relaxed than its bigger sister city in Thailand.

A distance of about 660 km by land travel separates these two Asian cities, and you have a few options to make the journey. If time is a priority, the best option is flying. If you prefer a slow paced adventure, you can use the bus, or do part of the travel by train.

Let’s analyze now each one of these options and consider its advantages and disadvantages.

Bangkok to Phnom Penh by Plane

The first option we will explore to get from the Thai capital to Phnom Penh is by plane. The main advantage of flying on this route is the time you will need to cover the distance. There are many daily direct flights from Bangkok to Phnom Penh and the flight time is of about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

There are direct flights starting at the two major airports in Bangkok, the Don Mueang Airport, and the bigger Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (IATA: BKK) Airport. They are both fairly easy to reach, although I consider BKK easier to reach, with its metro connection.

A number of companies operate the direct route from Bangkok to Phnom Penh. Among them, usually Air Asia has the cheapest fares, operating from the Don Mueang Airport to the Phnom Penh International Airport (IATA: PNH). Other companies in this route are Thai Smile, Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways. Thai Airways is usually pricier, but it also has higher standards of comfort.

If you will stay for some hours in one of the Bangkok airports, or the Phnom Penh airport, you can book lounges and transfer at Klook.com.

If you require a eVisa to Cambodia you can apply on the Cambodian Government eVisa website. Most Western citizens can either get a Visa on Arrival or an eVisa to Cambodia.

How to Buy Plane Tickets from Bangkok to Phnom Penh

The best way to buy plane tickets for this route is online, although you can do it directly at the airport. Booking in advance will usually get you a lower fee, especially during high season in Southeast Asia.

You can compare and book tickets for this route using Jetradar.

Bangkok to Phnom Penh by Bus

If you are adventurous and have plenty of time to explore Southeast Asia, taking the bus might be a good option. The travel time is the biggest downside of taking the bus as it takes from 13 to 14 hours to complete the journey.

On the other hand, you might break your journey in two sections. You can travel from Bangkok to Siem Reap, the location of the famous Angkor Wat temple, and from there, continue onward to Phnom Penh.

The buses are usually fairly comfortable on this route, but it will also depend on the company you choose. There are a few bus departure points in Bangkok, once again depending on the company. Some of them are the Morchit Bus Terminal and in the Khao San Road.

Here is a search bar of some of the bus services from Bangkok to Phnom Penh:

How to Buy Bus Tickets from Bangkok to Phnom Penh

Buying a bus ticket in Thailand is as easy as buying a plane ticket, and the best way to do it is online.

Bangkok to Phnom Penh by Train

There are no direct train routes connecting Bangkok and Phnom Penh. For that reason, it is only possible to partially do this trip by railways. The first part of the trip, in Thailand, is the one you can do entirely by train.

You can take a train from Bangkok to Aranyaprathet, which is the last town in Thailand, on the border with Cambodia. From there, you will cross the border, and arrive in Poipet, in Cambodia, where you can take a bus or van to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

As there are no direct trains, you will have to do some juggling if you take this option. While it is possible to book parts of this trip online, you may also want to arrive and check the options on spot. You can check timetables for trains in Thailand on the State Railway of Thailand website.

Traveling by Car

One option that is available for some is driving from Bangkok to Phnom Penh. However, you will need a number of requirements to do this journey by car. Bear in mind that while Thailand is a right hand side driving country, Cambodia uses the left hand side system.

Finally, not all border points will allow you to drive from Thailand to Cambodia. The traffic is also pretty chaotic in both countries, and it is not recommended to drive on this route unless you are used with the road conditions and traffic in the region.

Hotels in Bangkok

Thanabhumi – an option offering great value for the money in one of the best areas to stay in Bangkok, just a short walk to the Khao San Road.

ibis Styles Bangkok Khaosan Viengtai – an excellent choice with a unique decoration close to the Khao San Road.

Hotels in Phnom Penh

Lumiere Hotel – an excellent hotel in a privileged location in Phnom Penh.

Orussey One Hotel & Apartment – another great option featuring a rooftop swimming pool.

How to get from Hanoi to Sapa? Let’s look at the best ways to travel this route in Northern Vietnam, including bus, train, and taxi

Are you travelling through Vietnam and want to know the best way to get from the capital city, Hanoi to Sapa? This guide will help you work out the best way to do it and give you information on how to buy bus, train, or taxi tickets between the two cities.

hanoi to sapa

Hanoi to Sapa: The route

Most tourists to Vietnam start in either Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City (in the South), the two cities which boast the largest international airports in the country. Noi Bai International Airport has excellent direct flight connections to all over Asia, as well as Australia and Europe.

Sapa, located in Lao Cai province close to the Chinese border, is one of the most picturesque towns in Vietnam. The natural beauty has been ever so slightly edited by humans, with the neat rows of the rice terraces on the hills making an unforgettable sight.

The surrounding valleys are a great place for trekking, and learning more about the surrounding indigenous tribes. Among these the Hmong, Xa Pha, Giay, Tay, and Dao people. For adventure seekers, it’s also a short distance to Vietnam’s highest mountain, Fan Si Pan.

Hanoi and Sapa are located just over 300km apart. Happily, there are a few different ways that you can travel between the two cities, depending on your preferred method of travel. You can book options online, or wait until you’re in Hanoi to do it directly. Travel in Vietnam is affordable, and the route from Hanoi to Sapa is no different.

Hanoi to Sapa by Bus

This is the cheapest option for travelling between Hanoi and Sapa. Prices start at around 250,000 VND (around $11). There are a few different departure points, depending on which agency you travel with, so leave plenty of time to get to the right place.

sapa express bus hanoi

One of the best parts of taking the journey by bus is the flexibility – several agencies offer this route each day, and it normally takes around 5-7 hours.

Here is a search bar to check availability and prices in the route from Hanoi to Sapa:

How to buy bus tickets from Hanoi to Sapa

It’s easy to buy bus tickets between Hanoi and Sapa, and most companies offer the opportunity to do it online. Here are some of the agency websites selling bus tickets between the two cities.

Bookaway – a website which offers deals on international travel between Vietnam and neighbouring countries. Great for travelling South East Asia.

Baolau – another great option for buying bus tickets for trips in Vietnam and further afield.

Pros

  • Reclining, comfortable seats which turns into beds. Great if you’re on a night bus.
  • Cheaper than the train, and far cheaper than a taxi.
  • You can do the journey in one go.
  • Faster than the train.

Cons

  • Train is more comfortable.
  • Buses are less safe than trains. Keep an eye on your stuff.

Hanoi to Sapa by Plane (flights)

Although Sapa is one of Vietnam’s most popular tourist destinations, it doesn’t have its own airport. The closest airport to it is actually in Hanoi. Therefore, it’s not possible to fly between the two destinations.

Hanoi to Sapa by Train

You can’t travel directly to Sapa from Hanoi as it doesn’t have a train station. However, you can travel to Lao Cai, before changing to a bus, which takes 50 minutes to reach Sapa.

From Hanoi central station, you can take a night train to Sapa which takes at least 7 and a half hours. It’s also a more expensive option than the bus, which prices starting at 480,000 VND (roughly $20). For that, you get a fully reclining bed though.

How to buy train tickets from Hanoi to Sapa

Just like trains, the best option is to book your train tickets for this route online.

Pros

  • Very comfortable, and you can get a full bed in a compartment, over a reclining chair on a bus.
  • Sense of excitement and magic riding a night train in a new country.

Cons

  • Much more expensive than taking a bus.
  • Journey is in two parts.
  • Most trains operate at night.

Hanoi to Sapa by car (taxi)

Another option to travel between Hanoi and Sapa is a taxi, and it shaves the journey time down to just 4 hours and 10 minutes. It’s a good option if you’re in a group but could prove too expensive for a solo traveller. Prices start at 3,700,000 VND (roughly $160) and you can book through Bookaway or Klook.com, or try to arrange privately in Hanoi.

Tourism in Siem Reap

Siem Reap has seen rapid growth as one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the recent years. It is known as the gateway to Angkor Wat, an inspiring religious complex built during the Khmer Empire.

However, the city also has a number of different attractions worth visiting. Some of the most interesting are: Angkor Thom, Preah Khan, Bayon, Banteay Kdei. The Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport serves the city and is accessible by direct flights from many Asian capitals. Also from the capital city Phnom Penh, there are daily boats and buses going to Siem Reap. Even if road conditions are not optimal, if you have time and patience, you can take a bus from Bangkok and other neighboring countries.

For budget-oriented travelers, the best area to stay in Siem Reap is Wat Bo. Located on the east side of the Siem Reap river, Wat Bo is a good choice if you are looking for tranquility. However, at the same time, it is not far from the Pub street if you change your mind and want to party. There are plenty of hostels and guest houses in this area that can accommodate anyone’s budget. You can also find many restaurants along the Wat Bo road.

Most of the travelers will recommend Old French Quarter as the best and main area to stay in Siem Reap. This is a small neighborhood with narrow streets lot of cafes, shops, and restaurants.

The area is beautiful at night and you can take walk and explore the town. It is a popular place because of the Royal residence, the McDermott Gallery and the Angkor Market. It also offers a wide choice of hotels, hostels, bars, clubs and restaurants. You can also take tuk-tuk to the ancient city of Angkor which is just a few kilometers away.

Cambodia is known as one of the cheapest destinations in Southeast Asia, and its reputation is attracting more tourists every year. Cambodia is probably the country with the most relaxed visa policy in Southeast Asia, allowing visitors to stay months in the country without too much bureaucracy. The attractiveness of Cambodia increased as visa free travel to Thailand has become more restrictive lately.

However, if the money is not a problem and you prefer more comfortable and relaxing stay, you can have a blast in Cambodia for an excellent price. A budget above $ 80 per day will allow you to enjoy the best of the city in terms of luxury and comfort.

Best Months to Visit Siem Reap

The climate in Siem Reap is tropical, which means it from warm to hot and humid. The climate makes Siem Reap ideal for tourism since you can travel throughout the year. But to be on the safe side, probably it is the best to avoid the rainy season.

The dry season lasts from November to April, and temperatures are the most comfortable from December to February. So if you live in the northern hemisphere and you want to avoid winter and spend holidays in a tropical place, Siem Reap will be a perfect choice.
