Tourism in Cologne: Overview

Cologne received nearly 5 million overnight visits in 2015. As a tourist destination Cologne has various sights and attractions to bring this number of visitors. Chief among these is its cathedral. Declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1996, the cathedral has been an important site of pilgrimage in Europe for centuries, due to its shrine of the Three Wise Men and the relics contained within.

Most of Cologne’s city centre was destroyed during the Second World War, so much of its architecture dates from the 1950s onwards. The few older looking buildings are mostly reconstructions of important buildings. What does remain of their old town is a major tourist attraction and has many little museums for tourists to visit.

Best Places to Stay in Cologne

The best places to stay in Cologne are in the Innenstadt, more specifically the Altstatd Nord area, and the area around the Cologne Main Railway Station (Köln Hauptbahnhof). Let’s check below a bit more about these areas.

Altstadt Nord

Even if the city itself is relatively big, its center (Innenstadt) is rather compact and gather most of its attractions. The Altstadt Nord is the part of the Innenstadt with most restaurants, shops and nightlife activities. It is also where the famous Cathedral is located and possibly the best place to stay in the city.

The Altstadt-Süd is a slightly quieter area, but still at a walking distance to the Altstadt-Nord and its interesting attractions.

Main Railway Station

The Main Station (Hauptbahnhof) is also located in this area of the city, next to the iconic city’s Cathedral (Kölner Dom). Its surroundings can be an excellent choice for a stay if you are traveling by train. It is also very convenient if you are flying into Cologne, as suburbans train connect the Cologne-Bonn airport to the Main Station frequently.

Cost of Travel in Cologne

As a major Western European city, one can expect that most tourism related services in the city to be quite expensive. However, considering the region where Köln is, the city has some relatively affordable options for its visitors.

Getting to the city is probably going to be the cheapest part of your trip. The city is close to many airports with great flight connections, including those of low budget airlines. Cologne is also extremely well connected in its train network, however railway tickets are only affordable when bought in advance. Finally, many international and domestic bus lines operate in the city, including FlixBus and Eurolines.

While you are in the city, you may want to consider buying the KölnCard. This card available to individuals and groups for up to 48 hours at a time. The card costs between 9 Euros for a 24-hour individual ticket to 38 Euros for a 48-hour group one. Purchasing the card gives you unlimited travel on public transport and up to 50% off entry to partner attractions.

The public transport system is an effective mix of trams and buses. They have very good coverage and transport around 800,000 people a day. If you are going to use public transport frequently during your stay, there are day tickets and also discount tickets for groups. More information on the city’s public transport is available here.

Best Months to Visit Germany

Cologne has a relatively mild climate, much like most of Northern Europe. The temperature varies from an average 2 or 3 degrees in Winter to around 18 degrees in Summer. However, their warmest months also coincide with their wettest.

Like much of Germany, around Christmas is an excellent time to go. The Germans love Christmas and many traditions stem from original German ones. Cologne indulges in this as well and has a large Christmas Market.

Another time to go if you want to enjoy this German city is late February. This is when they hold their annual carnival. A great experience for children and adults. The city comes alive with fancy dress, music and fun activities for the week running up to Ash Wednesday.

Finally, Spring in Germany is another great option. Temperatures are mild, and the city is still not as crowded as in summer.

If you are traveling to other cities in Germany, you may want to check our guide on where to stay in Frankfurt. Alternatively you can also check where to stay in Dusseldorf, and the best places to stay in Munich.

Where to Stay in Taichung? Let’s check the best areas to stay in Taichung, one of the biggest cities in the island with great attractions and prices

Are you traveling to Taiwan? Check the best places to stay in Taichung, one of the best cities in the country, with great food and more affordable prices.

where to stay in taichung fengjia

Fengjia Night Market, Taichung. Photo by Alexander Synaptic.

Travel to Taichung: Overview

Taichung (台中) is the third biggest city in Taiwan, and a great place to visit if you are in the island. Its name means Central Taiwan, as the character 中 means “middle” or “central.

The city gathers the spirit of Taiwan in all of its nuances. Taichung has a lot of small businesses, ran by locals, which often includes some of the most delicious restaurants you will ever visit. The region is also home to many of the Taiwanese industrial parks, which fueled the impressive economic growth in the island in the past decades.

Taichung is the perfect stop if you are traveling around Taiwan, which usually involves a North to South route or vice versa. You can easily reach Taichung from both Taipei (to the North) or Kaohsiung and Tainan (to the South) using the Taiwan High Speed Rail.

You can buy tickets for attractions, get 4G internet, transfers and train tickets in Taiwan on Klook.com.

Taichung is also a great place to stop if you are planning to visit the Sun Moon Lake (日月潭), one of the biggest attractions in Taiwan.

Best Places to Stay in Taichung

Considering that this is the third biggest city in Taiwan, one can expect its rather spread out. Therefore, the best area to stay in in the city will depend on how long you will stay in Taichung.

Fengjia Night Market

The Fengjia Night Market (逢甲夜市) is one of the busiest night markets in Taiwan, and certainly deserves a visit. Located in the Xitun district, it is one best places to stay in the city, especially if you like (obviously) night markets.

Click here to check accommodation options close to the Fengjia Night Market on Booking.com

This area is probably the best to stay in Taichung if you are going to visit the city for more than one day. It is rather far from the city’s two train stations, and ideally you will need a taxi to get there. The area is also close to the Feng Chia University, an excellent choice for foreigners studying Chinese.

Railway Station

There is a big chance that if you visit this city, you will get there by train. It is important to understand that Taichung has two different train stations, one for the Taiwan High Speed Rail and one for regular trains.

The Taichung Main Railway Station (not the HSR one) is located in Central Taichung, at an easily accessible location. There are many hotels around this area, from budget to more high-end options. The only disadvantage of this area is that it lacks nightlife entertainment, specially if compared to the Fengjia Night Market area.

If you are using the High Speed Rail, the THSR station is located in the Wuri district. There are very few accommodation options in its area, and your best option is to take a taxi to the Fengjia Night Market, or to Central Taichung.

Budget Accommodation in Taichung – $

Ease Single Inn – an excellent choice offering dorm beds and affordable private rooms in Central Taichung.

Kiwi Express Hotel – Cheng Gung Branch – an affordable hotel in Central Taichung.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Taichung – $$

La Vida Hotel – located just a short walk from the Fengjia night market, this hotel offers a great value for the money in the Xitun district.

Fushin Hotel Taichung – an excellent hotel in Central Taichung, within waling distance to the Taichung Main Station.

Luxurious Hotels in Taichung – $$$

The Splendor Hotel Taichung –  luxurious hotel in Taichung featuring great entertainment options.

THE LIN Hotel – a great hotel in the Xitun district located a short drive away from the Fengjia Night Market.

Cost of Travel

Taichung is a pretty affordable city, especially if you compare prices with Taipei. While food and transport prices are just slightly cheaper in the city than in Taipei, accommodation in the city is certainly more affordable.

best places to stay in Taichung

The only disadvantage of the city when we compare it to Taipei is the cost of getting to the city. There are much less directly flights to this city than to Taipei, especially considering the Taoyuan International Airport (serving Taipei). In most cases, you will need an extra train ride to get to the city once you land in Taipei.

Food, just like everywhere in Taiwan, is available at virtually all times. It is usually delicious, healthy and quite cheap. You can get an amazing beef noodle soup in different parts of Taichung for something around TWD 150, which is roughly 5 US dollars. You can also get cheaper eats, especially if you don’t plan to eat in refined places.

Best Months to Visit Taiwan

Taichung has a very favorable climate year round, which is good news for most travelers. Winters are pretty mild, and the temperature is almost always good for outdoor activities.

Even if the city is pretty welcoming during most of the year, one should consider the Typhoon season in Taiwan. The typhoon season is usually from June to October. Typhoons do not have all the time during these months, and vary greatly in intensity. However, it is important to consider the weather before coming to Taiwan.

The other important event in Taiwan that should be avoided is the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) This one usually takes place in February, and transports and accommodations are normally very crowded during the Spring Festival. Ideally you should avoid this time when visiting the city and Taiwan as a whole.

Where to Stay in Palermo? Check the best areas to stay in Palermo, the capital and largest city in the island of Sicily, in Southern Italy

For those traveling to Sicily, this guide to the best places to stay in Palermo is definitely helpful to better explore the capital of Sicily.

best places to stay in Palermo

Palermo is the capital of the largest island in the Mediterranean and Italian region of Sicily. This seaside city was Italy’s capital of culture for 2018, and it’s bursting with art, culture, and history.

When you’ve seen enough of that, it’s just a quick trip to one of the nearby beaches. There, you can relax, top up your tan, or have a swim in the warm, blue waters of the Mediterranean. The city is a great base for exploring the rest of Sicily too.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the best places to stay in Palermo.

Travel in Palermo: Overview

Palermo is one of the major stop off points for tourists visiting Sicily. It’s located right on the north coast of the island, with fantastic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. These views are combined with beautiful green landscapes and a mixture of architectural styles in the centre.

Some of the most popular attractions include a historical palace filled with Byzantine mosaics, the neo-classical Teatro Massimo (a great place to take in an opera performance), and the stunning Cattedrale di Palermo which dates back to the 12th century.

If that’s not enough, add in the divine local food. It’s tasty, fresh, and influenced by all the previous conquerors of this island. There’s definitely enough for an exciting city break ahead!

Although Palermo is a beautiful place to visit, there’s one thing the city is famous for above all else. This, unfortunately, makes certain areas of the city very unsafe for tourists. Don’t just avoid staying in these areas, make sure that you don’t stray into them by accident – especially at night.

Best areas to stay in Palermo

Palermo is divided up into 25 districts, meaning that there’s a lot to choose from in the city. After all, you don’t want to miss out on the city’s ornate churches, traditional trattorias, and the vibrant nightlife. Some tourists choose to stay in Mondello, which is a bus ride out of the city.

This is a perfect spot if you want an authentic local experience. It’s actually a former fishing village with fabulous views of the sea and surrounding landscapes. However, we’ll focus on two neighbourhoods in the city itself – the Old Town or Centro Storico in Italian and Kalsa.

Old Town (Centro Storico)

If you’re visiting Palermo because you’re interested in the city’s history, then stay than the Old Town.

Due to its location between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, historically Palermo has been conquered more than most cities. You can easily see this, as every corner is a relic of a different civilisation, with remnants of Greek, Arabic, North African culture, amongst many more.

Many of the city’s most notable tourist attractions are here too – including the Cathedral, Quattro Canti, and the old Vucciria Market. You might not expect such wild nightlife in such a historical area, but you’d be wrong! There are lots of small alleyways filled with bars, and dancing goes on until the early hours in Vucciria Square.

The one downside of the Old Town is that pickpocketing is rather common here. So, remain vigilant and make sure you always know where your stuff is, as you would in any major European city.

Kalsa

Kalsa is another historic neighborhood in Palermo. This area is known as the old Arabic district of Palermo, and it is in fact quite next to the old town, towards the sea.

The area of Kalsa is equally beautiful with many of its alleys, delicious restaurants and various accommodation options. The neighborhood of Kalsa is in fact the oldest in city.

From Kalsa you will also have easy access to the Palermo Centrale Train Station, making of it a very convenient option if you are exploring Sicily further.

If you are traveling in Sicily by train, you can buy tickets on Trainline.

Budget Accommodation Options in Palermo – €

Hotel Concordia – a great relatively affordable option to stay in Palermo, in the Kalsa area.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Palermo – €€

B&B Campanile – A great choice in the the Kalsa district, in one of the best places to stay in Pristina.

Hotel Palazzo Brunaccini – An excellent hotel offering great value for the money in the center of Palermo.

Luxurious Hotels in Palermo – €€€

Grand Hotel Wagner – A refined superior hotel in a central location in one of the best areas to stay in Palermo.

Cost of travelling in Palermo

You’ll find that Sicily is generally cheaper than mainland Italy, which is a good start for making the most out of your trip! The average cost of travel in the city is about €75 per day, including accommodation, food and drink, local transportation, and entertainment.

sea palermo sicily

However, if you’re looking to spend less, then don’t worry. There are a few budget accommodation options in Palermo, and when it comes to eating, you can buy food at one of the many markets and cook yourself.

Onward travel in Sicily is also reasonably priced. Many budget carriers operate flights to Palermo’s Falcone Borsellino airport to and from mainland Europe.

Best Time to Travel to Sicily

Southern Italy has some of the highest average temperatures in the whole continent. You can easily use this in your favor when visiting Palermo and Sicily.

While July and August are the peak months for traveling in Europe, those are not the most recommended to visit Sicily. Temperatures are often very hot, and prices during these months are the highest across the year.

Spring and Autumn are definitely the best time of the year to travel to Sicily. You will enjoy pleasant temperature in months like May or October, and you can still easily go for a swim. Prices are also lower than in the Summer.

Winter may also be an option for Palermo. Temperatures in Palermo are considerably higher than in Northern Europe during this season. Sightseeing at pleasant temperatures is perfectly normal even in January.

Where to stay in Kyoto? Discover the best areas to stay in one of the most exciting cities in Japan, famous for its cultural heritage and unparalleled beauty

Kyoto is one of the most popular cities in Japan and it is easy to understand why. In this guide to this city full of culture, we will analyze the best areas to stay in Kyoto, as well as the cost of travel and when to visit this magnificent Japanese city.

where to stay in Kyoto

Tourism in Kyoto: Overview

If you are visiting Japan, that are good chances that you will include Kyoto in your itinerary. The city was once the heart of imperial Japan and it remains as a one of the main symbols of the Japanese history and culture.

International tourists planning to visit Kyoto arriving by air can select between two airports. The first airport is Kansai International Airport in Osaka and the second is Chubu Centrair International Airport in Nagoya. Both Kansai and Chubu-Centrair accommodate to both international and domestic flights, including those from low-cost carriers. From both airports, tourists can take a Shinkansen or a bus to the Kyoto Station.

If you are flying to Japan you can compare and book flights on Jetradar.

At least 20% of Japan’s National Treasures and 14% of its Important Cultural Properties are in Kyoto, including several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Various festivals such as the Gion Matsuri, Gozan Okuribi and Aoi Matsuri are also among the main attractions of the city, both for domestic and foreign visitors.

If you want to book activities, get a Japanese SIM Card, or a Japanese Railway Pass, you can get it from Klook.com. To rent a car, you can compare prices on RentalCars.com.

Where to Stay in Kyoto

When choosing a place to stay in Kyoto, you have a choice from one of its 11 wards. Kyoto’s 11 wards are reachable through its train and bus network. Kyoto Municipal Transportation Bureau handles its subway network. Tourists can also take the bus lines to travel around the city or rent a bicycle.

If this is your first time to visit the city, here are the areas you should consider for accommodations:

Higashiyama-ku

Higashiyama-ku is the place you should consider if you want to be close to attractions and the action. A good part of this ward remains untouched and well-preserved in traditional Japanese architecture style. As a result, tourists hoping to see buildings from old Japan would definitely get to see some in this area.

The Higashiyama ward is also the home to the entertainment district Gion. The district is where you can see geishas, with many of them performing in Gion’s various performance halls.

Aside from Gion, Higashiyama is also the location of some of the city’s shrines like the Yasaka Shrine, Tofuku-ji, Kodai-ji, Sanjusangen-do and the path to Kiyomizu Temple.

Nakagyō-ku

The Nakagyo-ku is another very central ward of Kyoto, and has a wide variety of eateries and activities. This ward together with the Higashiyama Ward offers the highest concentration of accommodation options in Kyoto. It is also the location of the Nishiki market, a great place to spend some hours in the city.

Budget Accommodation in Kyoto – $

Gion Guesthouse Yururi – an excellent Guesthouse close to the Yasaka Shrine.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Kyoto – $$

Hotel Sunline Kyoto Gion Shijo – a reasonably priced hotel in a very central location, in the Higashiyama Ward.

Hotel Kintetsu Kyoto Station – an excellent option if you are traveling by train to the city.

The Hotel Kiyomizu Gion – a great hotel in the Gion area.

Luxurious Hotels in Kyoto – $$$

Hotel Alza Kyoto – a luxurious hotel in Higashiyama-ku, in one of the best places to stay in the city.

The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto – one of the most luxurious hotels in the region, centrally located and with easy access to the subway (Kyoto Shiyakushomae Station).

Cost of Travel in Kyoto

As one of the most visited Japanese cities, it can be very expensive to visit the city if you end up visiting it during high season. On average, tourists would need to have ¥9,000 on hand per day to enjoy their stay in Kyoto.

Expenses may increase depending on the type of accommodation and activities you selected. Fortunately, travelers can buy discount tickets for trains and buses. The tickets also offer discounts from partner shopping and dining establishments.

kyoto japan

Best Months to Visit

Similar to other Japanese cities, Kyoto is perfect to visit during Spring (from March to May) and Autumn Season (from September to November). Around this time, the weather is perfect for sightseeing.

During the spring season, cherry blossoms are at full bloom. Around autumn, the scenery will be in hues of reds and oranges. Unfortunately, given the beauty Kyoto will be around in these times, it is also noted as the city’s hot season and accommodations can be quite pricy around this time.

If you wish to travel around the city without having to worry about the crowds, travel during winter or summer. Around this time, you have Kyoto all to yourself(more in winter than summer) and get perfect shots of its attractions.

However, these seasons can be unbearable either due to the sweltering heat or the freezing temperatures. Consider carefully if you can handle the temperature.

Considerations and Resources

When visiting Japan, this city is a must visit in your itinerary. Although surrounding cities around it now reflect a modern Japan, the old capital remains true to its roots and retain its historical charm. If you want to experience and understand what makes Japanese culture so intriguing, visiting Kyoto is a must.

If you are traveling to Japan check some of our other guides. Check the best places to stay in Tokyo as well as our guide to Nagoya.

If you want be in the best places to stay in Taipei during your visit to Taiwan, this guide will be definitely helpful. We listed not only the best areas to stay in Taipei, but also the average cost of travel in Taiwan, and the best time of the year to visit this East Asian nation.

best places to stay in Taipei

Taipei Chiang Kai Shek Memorial

Tourism in Taipei: Overview

Taipei is the capital of Taiwan (Republic of China) and one of the most interesting cities in East Asia. Most of Taipei’s population is of Chinese origin, but the Japanese rule can be felt in many of the city districts. Currently, Taiwan’s capital attracts tourists from all over the world, and its main attractions are its culture, food and technology.

Taiwan has a relaxed visa policy towards most citizens of Western nations. While a visa is often required to visit mainland China, most Western passports allow a  three months stay without a visa. Taipei is also a great place to visit if you are learning Chinese and or is interested in East Asian culture.

You can buy tickets for attractions, get 4G internet, transfers and train tickets in Taiwan on Klook.com.

Since Taiwan is an island, most visitors reach Taipei using the Taoyuan Airport. It has direct flights to Europe, North America and various Asian countries.

Taipei is also famous for the Taipei 101, one of the tallest buildings in the world.

Best Places to Stay in Taipei

where to stay in Taipei
Taipei City Center

Taipei is a big city, with a current population of almost 3 milion inhabitants. The best places to stay in the city are the following districts: Ximending, Zhongzheng and Xinyi. If you want to know where to stay in Taipei, below we have a little insight about these districts for your visit to the Taiwanese capital:

Ximending

Ximending is a very popular area among tourists and probably the best area to stay in Taipei. It is the ideal spot for shopping, with a number with option of shops open during the day and evening. It is also a great place to eat traditional Taiwanese food or get a foot massage. There are also some bars in the region, and it is usually pretty busy at during the evening.

Click here to find accommodation in Ximending on Booking.com

Zhonzheng and Taipei Railway Station

The district of Zhongzheng is a great option to stay in Taiwan for a number of reasons. Firstly it is pretty central and has excellent transport connections. Secondly, it is where the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall is located, which is one of the most famous postcards of Taipei.

Finally, this is where the Taipei Railway Station is located. From the Railway Station you will have easy access to other cities in Taiwan and also to the Taoyuan airport (by bus).

Xinyi

The Xinyi District is an upper class area of Taipei, with plenty of refined restaurants and luxurious hotels. The famous Taipei 101 is also located in its district. It is also a good area if you want to enjoy the city’s upper class nightlife.

Budget Accommodation in Taipei – $

Taiwan Youth Hostel & Capsule Hotel –  an excellent hostel and capsule hotel with one of the best interior designs in Taiwan.

Uinn Travel Hostel – an affordable hostel at walking distance to the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall in the Zhongzheng District.

Reasonably Priced Accommodation in Taipei – $$

Hotel Relax 5 – a great affordable option quite close to the Taipei railway station. Its surroundings have great eateries and transport connections in one of the best places to stay in Taipei.

Cho Hotel – an excellent choice with a unique decoration close to the Ximending Night Market area.

Luxurious Hotels in Taipei – $$$

Mandarin Oriental Taipei – an excellent hotel in the Songshan District from one of the most renowned luxury hotel chains in the world.

Evergreen Laurel Hotel Taipei – a great refined accommodation hotel close to the Songjang Nanjing MRT Station in the Zhongshan District.

Cost of Travel in Taipei

The cost of travel in Taipei is variable. While food and transport and relatively cheap, the city is pretty crowded, and accommodation can be quite expensive.

The capital is by far the most expensive city in Taiwan, and if you are visiting more cities in the country, expect prices to drop elsewhere. While the difference in food prices are not so significant, accommodation is much cheaper in cities like Tainan or Kaohsiung.

Food in Taiwan is widely available at virtually all times. It is also delicious, and pretty healthy. You have eateries for all choices in the capital, from small street food stalls to more refined restaurants.

Unlike mainland China, dairy products are used more often in the Taiwanese cuisine, and it has a bigger influence from Western cuisine. Traditional food in Taiwan is also delicious, and I strongly recommend tasting beef noodle soup.

Accommodation in the Taiwanese capital is plentiful, however finding a good hotel requires some research. Since the city receives a great number of tourists, but also of business visitors, accommodation can be expensive. However, you can still find affordable options, mostly in hostels. Taipei also has a number of business and higher-end hotels.

Public transport in the city is among the best in the world. The Taipei MRT has a wide network, affordable prices and usually comfortable transport conditions.

Best Months to Visit Taiwan

The best times to visit Taiwan is probably late autumn and early spring, however I consider winter to be also a good option. The climate in Taiwan is warm almost year round, with a few weeks of cooler weather during winter.

The island of Taiwan is in the Western Pacific, a region known for its typhoons. The typhoon season starts in spring and lasts until the autumn, however, the most active typhoon months are from July to September. Typhoons usually last for a few days when they hit the island.

Early spring and late autumn have quite pleasant weather, and much lower chances of typhoons. Both seasons usually have similar levels of rainfall, which can happen pretty often in Taiwan.

You should also avoid traveling to Taipei during the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year). It usually happens in February and most Taiwanese people travel and meet their families during this period. Hotels can be quite difficult to find, and many of them sell out during the Spring Festival. While shops and restaurants are opened, banks, factories and a number of business are closed.

The Turkish coast is famous for its unique views and beautiful cities. In this post we will analyze the best places to stay in Izmir, Turkey, a great option on the Aegean Sea.

Traveling to Turkey? Check out this guide on the best places to stay in Izmir, one of the best options if you want to enjoy the summer and the sea in Turkey.

Izmir Turkey, Photo by Thomas Depenbusch

Turkey’s third largest city, and only large city by the sea, would probably look much like Istanbul if not a fire in 1922 that destroyed much of the city. Izmir is still a tourist destination today, though, and a great jumping off point to see many sights on Turkey’s beautiful west coast, and even some Greek islands.

Tourism in Izmir: Overview

Izmir’s Levantine and Jewish heritage is the biggest reason to spend a day or two here before heading out to see the surrounding area. There is still a sizeable Jewish community here and tours of the synagogues and Jewish area called Alsancak are available.

The city is considered the most cosmopolitan city in Turkey and the least conservative of the big three. Other sights within the city include ancient Agora, the Archeology Museum, and a free Ethnography Museum where you can view and learn about local arts, crafts, and customs.

Surrounding Izmir are the ruins of Bergama to the north and Ephesus to the southeast. Each makes a great day trip and in the nearby small towns by each, you’ll find some of the best Turkish cuisine anywhere, especially pide, a type of Turkish pizza.

Budget Accommodation Options in Izmir, Turkey

My Happy Home Hostel – A great option to stay in Izmir. This hostel is located in the Konak district and is a pet-friendly accommodation.

Hotel Apart Alsancak – A good value for the money property at the heart of historic Izmir. Some rooms have a kitchen, which can be quite useful for some guests during their stay in Izmir.

Reasonably Priced Accommodations in Izmir, Turkey

Orty Airport Hotel – A great option located right next to the Izmir International Airport. Ideal for connecting flights.

Hotel Elara – This hotel is located in a new building in the Karsiyaka district of Izmir. The hotel also offers car rental services.

Luxury Hotels in Izmir, Turkey

Key Hotel – This incredibly luxurious hotel is located right next to the Aegean Sea in the Konak (historic) district.

Swissôtel Grand Efes Izmir – This magnificent property is also located in the historic district. It has a large swimming pool and many luxurious features.

Cost of travel in Izmir

Travel and lodging in and around Izmir is noticeably cheaper than in Istanbul. Lovely boutique hotels at reasonable prices abound in the city and breakfast is always included.

Getting around on public transportation is easy. Most people get around Izmir using the metro, or a dolmus, or minibus. One ride on either will cost about 3TL. There is also the option of shared taxis, which are cars that stop and pick people up anywhere, so you run the risk of not knowing how long it will take to get where you are going, but most cover a limited neighborhood and are also a cheap option.

The train to and from Izmir is cheap, practical, on time and can take you just about anywhere in Turkey, including Selcuk for about 10 TL, which is near the Ephesus ruins, as can the incredible network of buses. Bus travel is cheaper, and sometimes faster, than train travel. A bus from Izmir to Istanbul will cost between 55 TL to 72 TL.

Adnan Mendes Airport is busy, with numerous and inexpensive domestic flights to many cities in Turkey, as well as international departures. Budget domestic airlines abound in Turkey, and include Atlasjet, Onur Air, Sun Express, and Pegasus which also has many international flights.

Ferries are available from Cesme to go to the nearby Greek Island of Chios from May to September.

Best Months to Visit Turkey

The best months to visit this part of Turkey are March to May when it is dry and not so hot, and the summer months. Even though it can get to 40 degrees Celsius, the air is dry and the sunshine is a big draw.

Summer is beautiful, and nearby beaches like Cesme and Alacati are beautiful and can bring relief from the heat with sea breezes and white sand beaches.

Dublin has 1,024,027 habitants; It’s the biggest city in Ireland and also the most visited by foreign tourists. Over the last 5 years it become a popular destination for students who want to learn English. It is a cosmopolitan city, with a lot of friendly people drinking Guinness in pubs around the city.

Tourism in Dublin: Overview

Even if Dublin is famous for its brewery traditions, the capital of Republic of Ireland has much more to be explored, besides pubs and the beer.

Dublin is a charming city, divided by the Liffey River. During your stay in Dublin, it is easy to divide the places to visit between the Southside of the River and the Northside.

Northside

In the Northside, you can start your visit at Phoenix Park. The Phoenix Park is one of the largest enclosed recreational spaces within any European capital city. About 30% of the Phoenix Park is covered by trees. A good way to explore the Park is renting a bike. If you are lucky you can bump into a group of deers which live in the park.

For families with children, the Dublin Zoo, inside Phoenix Park is also a good place to start the day.

Still on the Northside, the Four Courts, and the Spire on O’Connell Street, are important places to go. For those who like some shopping during the holidays, it is worthy to stop at Henry Street and visit Penneys, part of the English Primark Group.

Penneys is the most famous Irish fast fashion shop, it is very popular among the teenagers and young adults. The prices are very welcoming and there a huge range of styles.

Southside

Now, let’s cross the Liffey River to the Southside.

In the Southside, there are a lot of tourist places to be visited. The main ones are: The Guinness Factory, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin Castle, The Christchurch, The famous Book of Kells Old Library of Trinity College, Grafton Street and the well-known Temple Bar district.

I recommend to start with the Guinness Factory, followed by the St Patrick’s Cathedral and the Christchurch. Then Dublin Castle, Book of Kells Old Library, Grafton Street and finally Temple Bar District to enjoy the famous Beer and appreciate the Irish music.

Just leave the Temple Bar District for the last, so, you are free to enjoy as much as you can. The best pubs to visit in Temple Bar are the Temple Bar Pub, which gave its name to the district, The Quays, and The Porterhouse.

Usually two days are enough to cover the main attractions of the city. However, if you have more time available, you can also go for a day trip to amazing towns and villages near Dublin.

Dublin is a quite expensive city. For sure, one of the most expensive things in Ireland compared to other countries in Europe is the beer.

For example, in Madrid a pint of beer in a pub usually costs around €3. In Dublin, it costs €6.
If you are planning to visit the places mentioned above, have in mind to leave a considerable budget for it. The Dublin zoo ticket for a family, which includes 2 adults and 2 kids, cost €47.

The entrance for St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin Castle and Christchurch is around €6 each attraction. Also the ticket for the Guinness factory costs €16, and the entrance for the Books of Kells library costs €11.

The best time to visit Ireland is relative, depending mostly n what you are looking for. In March, the city gets very busy, due to the St Patrick’s Festival. A lot of tourists from different parts of the world come to Ireland to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

The St Patrick’s Day is on the 17th of March when there is the famous St Patricks Parade. However, the whole festival lasts for around 4 days, with a lot of attractions scattered throughout the city.

Besides the St Patricks Festival, during the spring and summer, tourists usually flock to Dublin. In the spring and mainly summer, the temperature rises a little, and the average is 20° C.

If you are planning to visit Dublin during the winter, it is important to have in mind that due to the location of the island, rainy days are common when the average temperature is around 4°.

Day Trip from Dublin

There are so many places to visit in Ireland. And most of them are easy to visit  on a day trip from Dublin.

Ireland is very famous for its landscapes. Just 40 minutes away from Dublin, the Wicklow Mountains is one of these beautiful places to visit. Start on the Powerscourt Garden.

The next stop is the Glendalough Valley, part of the Wicklow Mountains National Park, one of Ireland’s most beautiful destinations.

The valley of the two lakes is an amazing scenery, very important for Irish History. There it is possible to visit the famous Monastic Site with round Tower and one of the oldest cemetery in Ireland.

After Glendalough, if you are driving, you can go to the highest pub in Ireland. Johnnie Fox’s Pub is traditional local pub, with excellent Irish food.

If you have more days available in Dublin, you can also go to Malahide, Howth and Dun Laoghaire for a day trip.

Where to stay in Da Nang, Vietnam? Check out the best areas to stay in this Vietnamese city

Da Nang is probably one of the most underrated cities in Vietnam. Check our guide on the best places to stay in the city and discover what it has to offer.

where to stay in da nang

Is It Worth it to Visit Da Nang? Tourism Overview

There is no doubt that tourism is booming in Vietnam. The country offers excellent entertainment, delicious eateries, a relatively good weather year round and very affordable prices. However, most people tend to visit Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and Hanoi. Da Nang, on the other hand has a much more relaxed atmosphere, and a population just slightly above one million inhabitants.

The city is an excellent place to stop while traveling along Vietnam, or if you want to visit just one city in the country. Da Nang is famous for its beaches, but it is also a great place to experience Vietnamese culture, and enjoy its unique cuisine. This Vietnamese city is also slightly cheaper than the capital Hanoi and the country’s largest city, Ho Chi Minh City.

Da Nang is in central Vietnam, and offer great transport links to other areas of the country, and even other Asian countries. The Da Nang Airport is one of the fastest growing in Asia in terms of passenger traffic, posting double digit growth in the past the past few years. You can fly to the city from the bigger hubs in the country, and also from many other Asian cities in China, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and others.

The city also benefits from its central location in Vietnam, and has many direct rail and bus links to many other cities in Vietnam. Danang is also a good stop if you are going to Hoi An, a great small city in Vietnam, close to Da Nang and famous for its picturesque old town. Finally, the Ba Na Hills is also definitely worth checking and is pretty close to Da Nang.

Best Places to Stay in Da Nang

Choosing the best place to stay in Da Nang will depend mostly on the purpose of your visit. If you are coming for general sightseeing or just passing by Da Nang, the city center is probably the most suitable area. If you want to enjoy the sun and the beach, the My Khe Beach area is the most accessible in the city.

Da Nang City Center (Dragon Bridge)

The most convenient place to stay in Da Nang is its city centre. Apart from being the most accessible place, it is also where you will find the highest concentration of accommodation options.

When choosing a place to stay in the city centre, you can use the Dragon Bridge and the Han River Bridge as a reference. the area between these bridges, on the west bank of the River Han is certainly one of the best places to stay in Da Nang.

Another advantage of the city center in Da Nang is its proximity to the airport. Most locations in the city center are just 2.5 to 3 km from the airport terminal.

My Khe Beach

The My Khe Beach is probably your best bet if you want to enjoy the sea and the sun while in Da Nang. My Khe is a white sand beach, and it is 20 miles long. Apart from the beach itself the area has accommodation options for all budgets, and plenty of restaurants and grocery shops.

Cost of Travel in Da Nang

Despite the recent rise in the influx of tourists to Vietnam, the country remains very affordable as most Southeast Asia. Vietnam is in fact one of the top budget travel destinations in the world. Da Nang is not an exception as is a pretty affordable city in terms of accommodation, food and transport.

Accommodation in Da Nang is affordable year round but it is subject to seasonality. The cheapest months are the wettest months, so if you don’t mind the rain you can get real bargains in the months of October or November.

Food wise Vietnam is a paradise for travelers. Da Nang has delicious, small restaurants that will leave your stomach and pocket fulls. Don’t forget to try Banh Mi, Pho Ga, and Vietnamese coffee while in Da Nang.

Public transport is not optimal in Vietnam, but there are plenty of affordable options beyond that. Apps like Uber and Grab are very popular in Vietnam. To get from and to the airport the best option is often to arrange a shuttle with your hotel.

Best Time to Visit Vietnam

stay in da nang

Vietnam has an overall good climate year round, but, something should be considered before visiting the the country. The area in which Da Nang is located has a tropical monsooon climate, and the months from September to November are extremely wet.

January to April is a great time to visit this part of the country. This months are not only the driest but also when temperatures are pleasant and inviting, for both enjoying the beach and sightseeing.

Another good idea is to visit the country during Tết (Vietnamese New Year). The dates are usually in late January or February and all cities in Vietnam have amazing decorations and celebrations during this time.
